Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 29: Asset, Subject, Property

The vault alarm answered Theodore before Jace could. A red pulse climbed through the floor, cutting across the blue light of the Safe Zone barrier. The palace walls translated it a second later.

Olivia made them say every category aloud. Asset. Subject. Property. Protected person. The words were close enough to share benefits and different enough to decide who could leave. Jace stopped treating vocabulary as decoration after that.

VAULT EMERGENCY

Chamber 001: Unauthorized Reconnection.

Preservation Support: FAILING.

Collapse Estimate: 00:04:58.

Theodore looked toward the stairwell. Jace pushed away from the wall. His knees disagreed, but Seraphina caught his arm before the disagreement became public.

"You have no Stamina," she said.

"I also have five minutes."

"You have less than that if you fall down the stairs."

"Then help me make good time."

Caleb opened a route map over one hand. "Command is still unable to enter through the registered approach. The vault anomaly has folded the lower path around itself."

"Stay here," Theodore told him. "Keep the barrier report active. If Command regains access, delay formal indexing."

"That is no longer procedure."

"No," Theodore said. "It is triage."

Caleb did not agree. He also did not follow them. Seraphina took most of Jace's weight down the broken stairwell. Theodore moved ahead, Elijah behind them, one hand near his wrist and the other against the wall whenever the buried structure shifted. The timer followed.

00:04:17.

00:04:16.

The vault door stood open when they reached it. Cold light flashed through the rows of chambers, all four hundred twelve panels flickering in the same rhythm as the failing seal around the unnamed heir. He was awake behind the glass.

"Your timing," he said, voice thin, "continues to be dramatic."

"I had help."

The chamber shuddered hard enough to interrupt his answer.

RESCUE QUEST: UNNAMED INDEXED HEIR

Jace read the list. "Three doors. Same room."

The heir placed one palm against the glass. "Do any of them let me walk out without belonging to someone?"

"No."

"Then I would appreciate a fourth."

The words were light. His face was not. The glass brightened around his hand, revealing the separated records beneath his skin. Body active. Memory partial. Name sealed. Bloodline routed. Yield suspended. For the first time, Jace saw fear reach him without being flattened into exhaustion. He did not pull his hand away. He kept it where they could see the shaking.

"I remember enough to know I was afraid before," he said. "I do not remember whether I was brave. That seems unfair."

"You do not need to be brave," Seraphina said.

"I would still like the option."

That was the closest the room had come to giving him one. Jace opened Breach Sight. The chamber split into overlapping laws. Preservation lines held the body together. Index lines separated each record. Beneath both sat a narrow ownership tag buried where the seal joined the man's bloodline.

BREACH SIGHT: OWNERSHIP-TAG SCAN

Target: Preserved Heir.

Protection Dependency: ACTIVE.

Ownership Tag: REQUIRED FOR RELEASE.

Accepted Owners: House / Claimant / Registered Custodian.

Unowned Release: PROHIBITED.

Deletion Trigger: Ownership Tag failure without replacement.

Breach Sight Proficiency: 21% -> 25%.

The tag was not a lock on the door. It was the rule telling the door that an unowned person outside the chamber counted as an error. Jace followed the line deeper. A name fragment flashed behind it.

N _ A _

The heir's head lifted.

"I saw something."

"So did I."

"Was it mine?"

"I think so."

His mouth shaped the missing letters without sound. The effort pulled a flicker through the chamber.

IDENTITY RECOVERY

Name Integrity: 0% -> 8%.

Self-Recognition: PARTIAL.

Claimant Recognition: REFUSED.

Theodore stopped beside the emergency shutoff. "If you remove the tag without replacing it, the chamber will classify him as unsupported."

"Meaning dead."

"Meaning the preservation law will stop recognizing a valid reason to keep him alive."

"That is a long way to say dead."

"It is the distance the System uses to avoid responsibility."

Elijah looked from the tag to the man behind the glass. "Mine was replaced before I woke."

The heir studied him. "With what?"

Elijah's fingers closed around his wrist. "A role."

The timer reached three minutes. Jace placed his damaged hand against the outer frame, not the glass. The black veins along his fingers answered the ownership line beneath it. A new function opened.

GLITCH PROTOCOL DETECTED

Prerequisites Met:

Breach Sight: Ownership seam identified.

Error Mark: Persistent rule damage available.

Rule Fracture: Local law separation available.

Hidden Condition: Protection attempted without ownership.

[NEW SKILL AVAILABLE]

HEIR'S CLAIM

Function: Protect forbidden persons and broken structures through claimant authority.

Warning: System will attempt to attach ownership.

Cost: VARIABLE.

Unlock?

Seraphina read the warning. "Claim is still their language."

"Then I will mispronounce it."

"You cannot improvise with one Charge reserve and eighty-eight Health."

"Sixty-four people outside once had nine seconds."

"That does not make this safe."

"No. It makes waiting familiar."

The heir looked at Jace through the glass. "Do not choose because I am frightened."

"I am choosing because you asked for a fourth door."

Jace accepted the unlock.

HEIR'S CLAIM UNLOCKED.

Level: 0.

Claim Capacity: LOCKED UNTIL FIRST VALID TARGET.

Legal Templates Available: Asset / Subject / Property.

Illegal Templates: NONE DETECTED.

The chamber trembled again.

TERRITORY SUPPORT DRAIN

Health: 88/420 -> 86/420.

Charge: 9/140 -> 7/140.

Safe Zone Barrier: 36% -> 35%.

Manual Bridge Remaining: 00:11:48.

Two emergencies pulled on the same body from opposite directions. The System displayed both as if the problem were poor budgeting. It never asked whether one body should have to pay both bills, only whether the account still had something left to take. The ownership tag widened under Breach Sight. Three clean lines rose from it and waited for Jace to choose what kind of person the heir would be allowed to remain.

FINALIZE TARGET CLASSIFICATION

Asset.

Subject.

Property.

Selection required before chamber collapse.

Time Remaining: 00:02:31.
