Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 41: Earth Was Storage

The three dead anchors remained on the map after every other panel closed. One beneath the East River. One north of the Safe Zone. One somewhere below a section of Manhattan the current street grid insisted was solid stone. Jace sat against the nearest column because standing had become a ceremonial activity. The Anchor Room still pressed through him from all directions, carrying the weight of the vault, the shield, and every line connecting them.

The phrase Earth Was Storage changed the scale of every ordinary ruin around them. A subway wall could be masonry and a lid at the same time. Manhattan had been built over secrets so old that modern construction crews had mistaken them for geology.

ANCHOR NETWORK

Active Anchors: 1/4.

Dead Anchors: 3.

Territory Stability: 57%.

Vault Integrity: 68%.

Safe Zone Barrier: 44%.

Claimant Health: 11/420.

Noah crouched beside the map. "Can it show us what the dead anchors protected?"

"It can show us that they are dead," Seraphina said. "Systems enjoy being specific about failure."

Jace touched the Manhattan point. The map folded inward. A second interface appeared beneath the city, older than the territory dashboard and less interested in being understood.

ARCHIVE ACCESS DETECTED

Structure: Anchor Room Lv. 1.

Available Record Layers:

Current Earth Registry.

House Sunchain Vault Records.

Pre-Registry Structural Archive.

Restricted Root History.

Recommended Access: Current Earth Registry.

Corruption risk beyond recommendation: SEVERE.

"Naturally," Jace said.

Seraphina reached for the current registry. "We start with the safe layer."

"The safe layer says Earth is Level One and disposable."

"It also keeps you conscious."

Noah looked toward the ceiling, where four hundred twelve chambers waited above them. "The current registry did not know this vault existed."

Seraphina's hand stopped. Neither answer was wrong. The safe record could keep Jace alive long enough to act. The restricted record might explain why the city had anchors old enough for Sunchain to build over. The System had arranged the choice so caution looked like ignorance and knowledge looked like self-harm. Jace selected Pre-Registry Structural Archive.

ARCHIVE SEARCH QUEST

Objective: Identify original purpose of the Manhattan anchor network.

Required Evidence:

Structural residue.

Vault-era records.

Myth continuity.

Reward: Basement Drive investigation progress.

Failure: Record lockout / Corruption escalation / identity bleed.

Current Corruption Load: 94%.

"That final condition sounds friendly," Jace said.

The first record opened. Manhattan disappeared. In its place stood a dark shoreline beneath a sky with two pale moons. Stone towers rose where Midtown should have been, each one carrying the same four-point anchor seal carved into its foundation. The image lasted less than a second.

CORRUPTION LOAD: 94% -> 95%.

MEMORY SOURCE: UNREGISTERED EARTH CYCLE.

Record integrity: 17%.

Jace tasted salt and blood. Someone else's hands were building the tower. Someone else's child was asleep beneath a coat nearby. Then the memory snapped away before he could see either face. Noah caught his shoulder.

"That was not yours."

"I noticed the extra moon."

"You answered when someone called."

Jace had not heard himself speak.

"What did they call me?"

Noah's expression tightened. "I could not understand it."

Seraphina moved between Jace and the interface. "Enough."

"We found a prior city."

"We found a damaged image designed to survive editing. That is not the same as a reliable history."

The archive responded before Jace could.

MYTH-RESIDUE SCAN

Current Human Record: Flood legends across 214 cultures.

Structural Match: Anchor network purge pattern.

Official Registry Event: NONE.

Residual Confidence: 63%.

A second scan followed.

Current Human Record: Sleeping gods beneath cities.

Structural Match: Preserved bloodline storage.

Official Registry Event: NONE.

Residual Confidence: 71%.

Noah read both. "The stories remembered what the records removed."

"Stories change," Seraphina said.

"So do records."

The answer landed harder because Noah had lived through both. Noah moved closer until the dead shoreline played across his features. The city in the record was not the one he remembered inside the chamber, but one tower leaned at the same impossible angle as a building from his recovered fragment.

"I remember people running past that foundation," he said. "There were bells under the street. Nobody knew who rang them. My mother said the sound meant the city was checking whether we were still there."

Seraphina looked at him. "You remember your mother?"

"No. I remember somebody saying the sentence with her voice."

The difference silenced them. The archive had preserved the warning and misplaced the woman who gave it. That was how the records survived: detail without ownership, feeling without a name, enough truth to haunt the next civilization but not enough to testify against whoever erased the first. Jace opened the physical layer instead of another memory. Pale lines spread from the Anchor Room through Manhattan's subway tunnels, utility routes, foundations, and old waterways. Human construction had followed them without knowing they were there.

STRUCTURAL RESIDUE

Anchor-era foundation paths: 81% retained.

Modern infrastructure overlap: 94%.

Recorded construction intent: NONE.

Basement Drive Investigation: 0% -> 31%.

Breach Sight Proficiency: 36% -> 39%.

Perception Proficiency: 8% -> 13%.

Overflow Experience: 159,200 -> 162,200.

The room dimmed as the Free Claim maintenance reached its next conversion cycle.

FREE CLAIM MAINTENANCE

Protected Person: Noah Venn.

Anchor-assisted rate: 1 Health per 70 breaths.

Health: 11/420 -> 10/420.

Noah saw the number and stood farther away, as though distance might make breathing cheaper.

"It does not work like that," Jace said.

"You do not know that."

"I know you are still breathing from over there."

The corner of Noah's mouth lifted, then he looked back at the old shoreline. The next layer did not open as an image. It arrived as inventory.

PRESERVED EARTH RECORDS

Cycle designation: RESTRICTED.

Stored bloodlines: MULTIPLE ERAS.

Preserved species: 9 confirmed / additional records sealed.

Reset events: PRESENT.

Current civilization continuity: PARTIAL.

Seraphina read the final line twice.

"Partial does not mean false," she said quietly.

"No," Noah replied. "It means somebody kept what was useful and called the rest history."

Jace opened the designation field. The Anchor Room hesitated long enough to make the answer feel forbidden.

LOCAL DESIGNATION: EARTH.

ARCHIVE DESIGNATION: BASEMENT DRIVE.

SECTOR STATUS: SEALED STORAGE.

CONTENTS: PRESERVED HEIRS / FAILED BLOODLINES / RESET RESIDUE.

Earth was listed as a sealed storage sector, with preserved heirs from different eras and apparent resets of human history.
