Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 46: Four Hundred Voices

The vault did not open cleanly. Four hundred twelve seals released in sequence, but only twenty-three chambers lifted their glass. The others remained closed under preservation safeguards, ownership gone while damaged bodies still needed the machines around them. The first sound was coughing. Then crying. Then voices asking questions in languages the System translated badly or not at all.

Four hundred voices did not become a choir. They contradicted one another, panicked at different times, and wanted different things. Jace took that as proof the vault had failed to turn them into a single convenient problem.

CONTAINMENT RELEASE

Ownership seals removed: 412/412.

Physical chamber release: 23/412.

Conscious contacts: 168.

Dormant contacts: 234.

Critical contacts: 10.

Deleted during release: 0.

Lucas looked across the rows.

His weapon lowered.

"Zero," he said.

Sophia checked the woman she had protected. The chamber glass was open now, but Sophia kept her hands near the woman's shoulders without touching until the woman nodded. Only then did she help her sit.

"Name?" Sophia asked.

The woman answered in a language Jace did not know. The interface offered a catalogue number instead. Sophia closed it.

"We wait for her language," she said.

The vault filled with partial movement. A silver-skinned heir unfolded one arm. A child behind sealed glass opened both eyes. Somewhere in the far rows, someone laughed once and immediately began sobbing. Noah stood in the center aisle with both hands open at his sides.

"You are not owned," he said.

The vault translated him into seventeen languages. Several people panicked anyway. One chamber began flashing.

SUBJECT 204

Custody signal lost.

Behavioral stability: FAILING.

Recommended response: Assign replacement authority.

Lucas crossed the aisle before Jace moved. He struck the recommendation panel with the broken frame. It passed through the light.

"Useful," he muttered.

"Talk to him," Noah said.

"About what?"

"Anything that is not an order."

Lucas looked through the glass. The person inside had four arms, two held against their chest and two clawing at the seal. Lucas lowered the frame.

"My name is Lucas," he said. "I woke up angry too."

The clawing slowed.

CONTACT STABILITY

18% -> 26%.

Authority assigned: NONE.

Lucas read the update.

He did not look pleased. He looked caught doing something that contradicted the only plan he trusted. The Vault Lock opened beneath Jace's claim.

STRUCTURE CLAIM STATUS

Target: Vault Lock.

Claim Type: Contested Structure.

Attached living property: 0.

Release authority: ACTIVE.

Containment authority: DISABLED.

Heir's Claim Proficiency: 28% -> 100%.

[SKILL LEVEL UP]

HEIR'S CLAIM LV. 2.

New Function: ATTACHED-PERSON EXCLUSION.

Structures may be claimed while explicitly excluding living occupants.

Cost reduction: 12% for witnessed exclusions.

Claim Capacity:

Living Free Claims: 1/1.

Contested Structures: 1/2.

Jace read the new function.

"Would have been useful five minutes ago."

Seraphina looked at his five remaining Health. "The System prefers to award tools after the injury that proves you needed them."

"Strong training philosophy."

The vault continued processing what Sunchain had left behind.

ENCOUNTER COMPLETE

Sunchain remote extraction defeated.

Vault Lock claimed.

Human Asset Layer: DISSOLVED.

Preserved heirs liberated: 412.

Attribute Points gained: 8.

Skill Points gained: 3.

Access: 74% -> 76%.

Level Break Progress: 2% -> 4%.

The Access increase struck harder than the reward. Black lines moved across Jace's vision. For one breath, every open chamber became the same room and every freed face belonged to someone he had failed before meeting.

CORRUPTION LOAD: 96%.

AUTHORITY BLEED RISK: EXTREME.

Seraphina caught his chin and forced him to look at her.

"Name."

"Jace."

"Where?"

"Basement with terrible management."

"Good enough."

The structure reward opened.

Jace marked every Charge cell unavailable. Lucas saw him do it.

"That power came from us."

"Yes."

"You are leaving it sealed while the shield upstairs is dying."

"Yes."

"People may die because you refuse to use stolen power."

Sophia looked over from her patient. "And people were kept here to make it."

Lucas faced her. "I know where it came from."

"Then stop talking like the source disappears when the need is real."

"The need is real."

"So is the theft."

Noah stepped between them again, but this time he did not tell either to stop.

"What would returning it look like?" he asked.

The Vault dashboard answered.

CHARGE RESTITUTION

Known contributors: 412.

Verified individual shares: 308.

Fragmented shares: 104.

Direct return risk: Destabilization / overload / identity bleed.

Consent network required for safe distribution. Function unavailable until Vault Lv. 1.

Lucas read the lock. "Later."

"Later with a route," Noah said. "That is different from never."

Lucas looked at Jace. "You keep building answers that arrive after somebody bleeds."

Jace could not argue. The Free Claim maintenance reached another cycle.

Health: 5/420 -> 4/420.

Noah flinched.

Lucas noticed that too.

A territory contact list opened without asking.

FREED HEIR CONTACTS

Verified names: 3.

Self-recognized identities: 19.

Partial identities: 149.

Unrecovered identities: 241.

Faction status: UNFORMED.

Loyalty to claimant: NOT APPLICABLE.

Jace liked the final line more than the reward. Sophia moved from chamber to chamber, teaching people how to ask before touching. Lucas remained with Subject 204 until the person's four hands stopped shaking. Noah repeated names whenever someone offered one and left blanks whenever they did not. The vault no longer sounded like machinery. It sounded injured, confused, alive. Then the Anchor Room sent a warning through Jace's bones.

SAFE ZONE EMERGENCY

Barrier Integrity: 44% -> 31%.

Protected population above: 187 -> 204.

Charge reserve: 0%.

New structural load: Liberated Vault.

Failure estimate: 00:12:00.

Hundreds of weak voices breathed at once. The sound rose through the floor.

Above them, the Spire shield began to fail.
