Chapter 107: Chapter 107: Three at Once?
After placing the Tentacle Grass under the glass cover, Lloyd prepared to leave the Thought Realm and go back to sleep.
Before leaving, he took one last look at this desolate and deathly silent world.
’This is probably what the end of days looked like for ancient civilizations, huh? The continuation of civilization... it really is no easy feat...’
Lloyd let out a peculiar sigh, then closed his eyes and left the Thought Realm. He pulled the blanket over himself and drifted off to sleep.
Just as he was drifting into a hazy sleep, he suddenly heard someone calling his name:
"Lloyd, are you asleep?"
Lloyd paused, dazed. He groggily opened his eyes and saw that the earring Weiya had given him was glowing softly, lending a captivating, dreamlike quality to its original amethyst.
He quickly grabbed the earring, infused a bit of Spiritual Power into it, and replied:
"Almost. What’s up?"
Weiya replied from the other end of the earring:
"It’s nothing... It’s just... I tried that music box you gave me. It works really well—even better than what you wrote in the instructions."
Lloyd smiled, snuggling deeper into his blankets. Cradling the earring in his hand, he replied:
"That’s good. Keep using it for now. I’ll get you a better one in the future."
"Thank you..."
Weiya replied very quietly, then fell silent for a moment. Seeing that Lloyd hadn’t responded, she took the initiative to ask:
"Are you asleep?"
"Mm... Almost..."
"Then... I won’t disturb you anymore. Good night, Lloyd."
"Good night, Weiya. See you tomorrow."
The earring immediately went back to normal, falling silent once more.
Lloyd had intended to put it back on the bedside table, but after a moment’s thought, he tucked it under his pillow before peacefully falling asleep.
...
The next day, Lloyd woke up a little earlier than usual and hurried into the kitchen to make breakfast for his sister.
Today was the magazine’s official launch day, and Evelor was about to face her most important and busiest day yet. Lloyd hoped she could sleep in a little.
Despite the rush, he didn’t lower his standards, putting all his culinary skills to use to prepare three dishes for his sister.
Fried eggs with chili sauce, broccoli sandwiches, and onion and eggplant soup.
And for the little kitten, he prepared eggplant skins mixed with milk.
’Hmm, not bad. It looks pretty good. Seems like with all this time I’ve spent practicing, my cooking skills are improving faster than my strength.’
Lloyd nodded in satisfaction.
After breakfast, he helped his sister comb her hair as usual. Seeing her cute, youthful face in the mirror filled with anxiety and worry, he quickly offered some encouragement:
"Sis, your magazine is amazing! It’s definitely going to be a bestseller!"
Hearing the affirmation from her younger brother, Evelor nodded emphatically and smiled.
"Mhm! As long as you like it, Yi, that’s all that matters!"
After the siblings parted ways, Lloyd took the ’subway’ at his usual time and arrived at the Eighteenth District.
[Ding~ Madness Value +50]
’This subway is always a guaranteed +50, isn’t it?’
When he walked out of the cave, a Weiya had spawned there, just as he expected.
But today, she wasn’t just standing outside dazedly, waiting for Lloyd to greet her; instead, she took the initiative and waved at him.
Lloyd walked over and immediately started promoting his sister’s magazine.
Weiya took the magazine, looking over the table of contents and introduction as she walked slowly shoulder-to-shoulder with Lloyd.
Then, she asked with some concern:
"Hm? It’s about folklore? This... isn’t that a little dangerous?"
"It is, which is why I repeatedly stressed the safety issues to her. She promised me over and over that she would only collect the stories and not go investigating or exploring them herself. Plus, she has a very professional security Advisor over there, so it shouldn’t be a huge issue."
Lloyd explained his reasoning.
"Mm, that’s good. As long as she stays inside the city, she’ll be safe."
Weiya nodded and continued to slowly flip through the first story, "Love Clover."
She wasn’t a fast reader; she read every word and every sentence carefully. She was also very delicate when turning the pages, seeming exceptionally elegant and reserved, possessing the aura of a bookish young woman.
By the time the two of them were about to reach Tower Nine, she had just finished the first short story and came to a conclusion similar to Lloyd’s:
"It’s a very good story with a great lesson. Love is something you have to fight for and cherish on your own; you can’t pin your hopes on some ethereal legend."
"Yep! Looks like we see eye-to-eye."
Lloyd replied with a smile.
But Weiya suddenly turned her head away, an inexplicable blush flashing across her face. She then replied, a bit flustered:
"Y-Yeah, right..."
Just then, they drew very close to Tower Nine, and the number of people on the path began to increase. Weiya quickly composed herself and switched back to a serious tone:
"I’ll find time to read your sister’s work. I’ll also recommend it to suitable people..."
She then added a small suggestion:
"If the printing and illustrations were a little more refined, it would probably be more popular, don’t you think? Works about folklore like this have always been a popular topic in the city, but no one has ever managed to build an influential and lasting brand. Many of these magazines either go out of business or devolve into pulp fiction."
Lloyd nodded and replied:
"Okay, I’ll pass that on to my sister."
After they parted ways, Weiya returned to her office with the magazine and the kitten, while Lloyd strolled leisurely toward the notice board.
He waited for the others to finish picking out their keys before going to take what was left.
Today, the Executors left him five keys, all for the -3 floor.
Lloyd took the keys and started to leave, but just as he turned, he heard the sound of hurried footsteps behind him, followed by delicate, breathless panting.
He turned to look. ’It’s Meditis?’
’It’s rare to see her here this early. She’s not planning on fighting me for the keys, is she?’
And just as he thought, Meditis looked up at the empty notice board and hurriedly asked Lloyd:
"You... You took them all?"
Lloyd brandished the five keys in his hand, a smug grin on his face.
"You... you idiot... Are you that desperate... to go insane?"
Meditis asked, hands on her knees as she gasped for breath.
"Don’t you worry. I won’t go insane before I’ve avenged my parents. After all, I despise evil."
With that, Lloyd waved his hand and swaggered toward the elevator to reap today’s Madness Value and bounties.
But to his surprise, three of the five cells today actually held Out of Controls.
This was quite rare.
It was also a bad draw. Out of Controls had no recovery value; you could only earn some pocket money for the trouble.
