Chapter 122: Chapter 122: Setting a Record
The twenty-some cartoon zombies, which had already scattered and were fleeing at high speed, were inexplicably wiped out in an instant?
And the zombie that was first hit on the head with the bucket was split clean in two, as if sliced open by a sharp paper cutter.
The wooden plaque in front of Lloyd, which displayed a countdown, still showed over twenty seconds remaining.
After the countdown ran out, a huge, colorful ball suddenly appeared above his head. It burst open with a POP, scattering all sorts of petals and streamers, each printed with "1st."
This indicated he was the first player to clear difficulty 7.
The players nearby were dead silent. They were clearly still in shock, staring blankly for a good ten seconds before someone finally took the lead and started to applaud.
CLAP... CLAP... CLAP...
The applause came from the Magic Bullet Hunter, who then praised him aloud:
"Congratulations. I was in awe of your performance. Thank you for showing me a completely new way of thinking."
Following his lead, the rest of the players erupted into cheers and applause.
"Incredible! Absolutely incredible! It’s an honor to have witnessed the spectacular performance of the great ’Newbie’! My respects to you!"
"I knew it. Anyone who dares to pick difficulty 7 right off the bat is no rookie. The name ’Newbie’ must have some other meaning. Looks like I’ve learned a new term today."
"Hello, would you be willing to share your real-world contact information? I run an Association in the City of Illusion, and I’d love to build a deeper connection with you."
Amidst the praise and attempts to curry favor, someone voiced their confusion:
"How is that possible? Isn’t he using a power from the Veto family? He even shouted its signature catchphrase... How did he achieve such an outrageous result?"
"The Veto system has always been inscrutable. It’s hailed as the system with the highest potential, capable of creating Miracles. Winning a single game shouldn’t be *that* surprising, should it?"
"No, you’re not a Veto-type user, so you don’t understand its principles. You have no idea just how ridiculous this is. It’s unbelievable... How in the world did he do it?"
In truth, it wasn’t just the other players who were confused—Lloyd himself was just as surprised.
He had simply locked onto the target, activated two skills that seemed useful, poured his power into the little bird plushie, and casually flicked it.
The result had far exceeded his own expectations.
Still, he could vaguely sense that the power he’d poured into the plushie felt different than before.
It felt like he could pour more power in, and it was stronger and more condensed.
’Was it because I maxed out my Spiritual Power to 100 when I leveled up earlier? Did that cause some kind of change?’
’Just like how I could feel myself adapting to Spiritual Contamination faster after I maxed out Rationality to 100?’
In any case, this wasn’t the time to dwell on it. Lloyd gave a few cursory replies to the players around him, planning to find somewhere quieter to think things over.
He wanted to strike while the iron was hot and play another round, but he’d already tried. The game’s rules stipulated that you couldn’t play again after winning once a day; you had to come back tomorrow.
You could, however, lose as many times as you wanted—until you either won once or your points hit zero.
’Damn it! And here I was, hoping to grind for some points.’
Lloyd cursed under his breath. Now he understood why so many people were watching from the sidelines while so few were actually playing.
He also realized why the Attendant had recommended this game to him. The guy had already been complaining that he didn’t visit often enough.
’I have a feeling that guy is up to something...’
As his mind raced, Lloyd maintained a cool, low-key demeanor and gave a few noncommittal replies to the surrounding players. Just as he was about to leave, the Attendant suddenly appeared before him.
"Congratulations. You have set a new record in the game, earning 1 Precious Point. As a result, you have also earned a place in the second-floor garden’s Hall of Fame."
As the Attendant spoke, he snapped his fingers. A blackboard immediately dropped from the ceiling, covered in a long list of names—likely several dozen, perhaps close to a hundred people.
Lloyd gave it a quick glance. It listed records set by various players in different games, all ranked by their number of Precious Points.
It took him a while, but he eventually found his own record listed far down:
[Player Newbie, first to clear difficulty 7 in the game *Right on Target*. Precious Points +1]
Although Lloyd didn’t know how many players there were in total here, he felt this "Hall of Fame" seemed rather cheap.
But judging by the reactions of the other players, it seemed to be quite an achievement. They were all chattering away, their expressions a mix of envy and jealousy.
Unfortunately, Lloyd couldn’t hear what they were talking about. Ever since the Attendant had appeared, he could no longer hear the other players’ voices, as if he’d been isolated from them.
And it seemed the other players couldn’t see him or the Attendant, either.
Taking advantage of the sudden quiet, Lloyd glanced at the number-one ranked player. Their codename was "Entertainment Supreme," and they already had 5 Precious Points.
The players below them mostly had 3 or 2 points, a significant gap.
The Attendant spoke again, as if no one else was there:
"Precious Points are hard-earned and extremely valuable, so please spend them wisely. Would you like to see the redemption catalog?"
"Let’s discuss it outside."
Lloyd gestured with his chin.
’A whole crowd of people is chattering all around me, but I can’t hear a single sound. This is getting a little weird...’
A black wooden door materialized in front of the Attendant. He led Lloyd through it and into the exquisite little garden, then handed him several catalogs.
The first catalog didn’t have many items, and their names were bizarre. Lloyd didn’t recognize a single one.
Things like "Daedalus’ Woe," "Overlord Butterfly," "All-Powerful Spin Stick," and "Black and White Thousand Birds."
’What the hell is all this stuff?’
’The main thing is, they’re ridiculously expensive. They start at ten Precious Points each. It’s like they aren’t even meant to be redeemed.’
Lloyd flipped to the next two pages. They were filled with more items whose names he’d never even heard of, and he couldn’t afford any of them either.
The only item he vaguely recognized, which only cost 1 Precious Point, was something called a "Torn Page of an Ancient Book."
He didn’t even have to think about it; it was obviously a scam. Lloyd certainly wasn’t going to trade for that.
He tossed the catalogs back to the Attendant and asked to see the regular one instead.
But he only gave it a cursory look and didn’t redeem anything.
He currently had a total of 16 regular points—14 from his difficulty 7 win, plus the 2 that were refunded. He planned to save them for now and use them later to redeem materials that couldn’t be bought on the market.
