Chapter 133: Chapter 133: He’s Very Lucky
Lloyd put down his coffee cup, closed his eyes to recall, and recounted everything about his meeting with the critic, including the cause and effect. He held nothing back, not that there was anything to hide.
The captain listened patiently while his team member diligently took notes, asking a question or two from time to to time.
"So, you didn’t activate your inspiration at the time? You just observed him with your naked eye and didn’t notice anything unusual about him?"
Lloyd nodded, then asked in return,
"That’s right. Who keeps their inspiration active while having tea?"
"Er... we do..."
"Huh?"
"Don’t worry about it. It’s a professional habit, and one of the many things that make us different from you," the captain explained in a resigned tone.
Lloyd smiled and asked,
"I can understand that. Your main duty is to deal with criminals, so inspiration is indeed very important... Anyway, that’s all I have to say. I wonder if it’s of any help to you?"
"Hmm... It should help us narrow down the time of the crime. The murderer most likely visited the victim after you left, just missing you..."
The captain made a preliminary judgment, then nodded to indicate that was all.
"Alright, that’s all for now. Thank you for your cooperation. Could you lend us this room for a while? We plan to organize the case details here."
But Lloyd didn’t rush to leave. He asked again,
"Uh... is there nothing else I can help with?"
He was genuinely asking to help. After all, he had always been a righteous young man who loathed evil, the type to write anonymous tip-off letters for any little thing.
Besides, a criminal who dared to strike in the Central District was bound to be vicious and depraved. Bringing them to justice sooner rather than later would be good for everyone.
But the captain declined his kind offer, saying with a slight smile,
"Alright, my big star. A super genius like you should focus your time and energy on the proper path. Leave dealing with these troublesome criminals to us."
With things put that way, what else could Lloyd say?
Just as he was about to leave, the captain suddenly added a reminder,
"Just in case, you’d best not use Divination for a while. Criminals who use the [Curse] system are experts at using Divination to harm people."
Lloyd nodded, took the advice to heart, and then opened the door and left.
After he was gone, the two remaining in the conference room, as if performing a magic trick, took out sugar cubes, milk, and Chocolate, and haphazardly added them to their coffee. Then, while sipping their drinks, they began a brief discussion.
The team member was the first to ask,
"Could it be the ’Advisor’? To be able to strike so close to the Veto Sanctuary without being detected... he’s the only one I can think of."
"There’s a certain possibility, but something feels off..."
"Captain, you mean... he let our big star go?"
"Yes. A super genius was right there, yet he let him leave safely. That really doesn’t seem like the ’Advisor’s’ style... But on second thought, perhaps they really did just miss each other. If so, we can narrow the timeframe down to that day."
As he spoke, the captain picked up his notebook to check the schedule, then nodded and gave a simple analysis.
"We first found signs of the ’Advisor’ in the underground district. The next day, the critic was murdered, becoming his scapegoat. Then, by last night, the preliminary preparations for [Cost Transfer] were complete...
The timeline is a bit tight, but if it was the ’Advisor,’ it would still be plausible.
Our big star was really lucky. If he had left any later, we wouldn’t be having this conversation..."
Saying this, he flipped through a few more pages of his notebook, which contained records of the ’Advisor’s’ last known appearance.
"The last time we had a clear track on this guy, he was still using powers from the [Calamity] system. He planned and killed more than ten of our colleagues from the City of Serenity...
"But that case was three years ago. Now he’s reappeared, and he’s even mastered [Cost Transfer] from the [Curse] system?"
"What a terrifying guy... How did we end up with such a rotten assignment?" his teammate muttered, taking another sip of the sickeningly sweet coffee.
"Once we catch him, you can ask him why he’s been so obsessed with the [Twist] system all these years. If it weren’t for that, this case wouldn’t have landed on our heads."
"Uh... Captain, you actually think we can catch a guy this dangerous?"
"Otherwise?"
"I think we’ll probably die a horrible, ugly death..."
"Hah. Everyone dies eventually. What’s the difference if it’s a day sooner or later?"
The captain said with a carefree air, taking another big gulp of coffee.
’Why is it still so bitter?’
............
For the moment, Lloyd had no idea that he had just brushed past one of the top five super-criminals on the bounty list.
He had just stepped out of Tower One when he saw Weiya waiting for him outside. The moment she saw him, she asked anxiously,
"How did it go? They didn’t give you a hard time, did they?"
"No, no, I was just cooperating with their investigation."
Lloyd said, then asked another question,
"I thought they seemed pretty easy to get along with. Why was there such an ugly scene earlier?"
"That’s because their squad has a new member who just reported for duty today. He said some very nasty things, which caused a lot of resentment."
Weiya explained, her expression turning icy. She was clearly still angry about his words.
’A rookie who just reported in? Joining an obviously seasoned and slick Hunter squad, then coming to the Holy Judgment Court’s territory to spout nonsense?’
Lloyd couldn’t help but recall the words Captain Fox had said earlier, things like ’someone reminded him to follow the rules’ and ’it has nothing to do with you and me’.
’This reeks of foul office politics...’
’It seems the Saint’s Grace Court’s terrible reputation is well-deserved...’
"You don’t need to worry too much about these things. The Sect is a huge organization; some things are just unavoidable."
Weiya offered another word of comfort, then asked curiously,
"What case were they questioning you about?"
"An exceptionally brutal murder case..."
Lloyd then told Weiya about the case, leaving her stunned. She couldn’t help but murmur with emotion,
"I can’t believe such a vicious case could happen in a place like the Central District... It seems that as the great expansion continues, these dark forces are getting restless."
"Yeah, that’s why we have to work hard to get stronger."
Lloyd agreed.
The two of them chatted as they walked back to Tower Nine. As soon as they entered, several Executors surrounded them.
"Senior Lloyd, are you okay? Those clowns didn’t give you a hard time, did they?"
"Were the people from the Saint’s Grace Court trying to recruit you? Don’t you dare agree! The Eighteenth District can’t lose Senior Lloyd!"
"That idiot from earlier was so obnoxious. What does he mean, they’re the law enforcement agency? What does he mean, they have the right to question all matters? That arrogant face of his really makes you want to punch him."
"If Judge Weiya hadn’t stopped me, I would’ve thrown a brick at that idiot."
Seeing the genuine concern on their faces, Lloyd smiled, shedding his usual indifference. He responded to each of them, patiently calming them down.
But he didn’t mention the case, simply telling them, "Don’t overthink it, and Don’t Ask Too Much."
After they had all dispersed, Lloyd went to the library to borrow a book on equipment, intending to research what this ’Magic Pocket’ the captain had mentioned was.
He temporarily pushed the murder case to the back of his mind. After all, he had provided what little information he could.
But a bit of curiosity remained—just what kind of Divination could have left the critic in such a miserable state?
’These criminals are truly detestable!’
When Lloyd returned to his office, he flipped through the book’s table of contents and quickly found the section on the ’Magic Pocket’.
It turned out the thing was a much, much weaker version of a ’Spatial Storage Bag.’ It couldn’t even be considered a Storage Bag, but rather a kind of special conduit.
It allowed the holder to create a special spatial link to a real-world safe or warehouse. By reaching a hand in, they could retrieve items from inside.
But it had a clear distance limitation; the safe or warehouse couldn’t be too far from the ’Magic Pocket.’ So, most of the time, it was linked to the trunk of a steam car. The coffee pot and other things the captain and his team used were likely conjured from their trunk.
As for features from novels like ’stores anything,’ ’ignores size,’ ’unconditional preservation,’ and ’smart sorting and filtering’—you could forget about those.
However, according to the book, the kind of Spatial Equipment from novels had actually existed in history. Back in the glorious era when humanity was at the ’Third Stage of Fighting Power,’ such equipment wasn’t even that rare.
It was just that after the apocalyptic cataclysm, modern humans could only use this vastly weakened "lite" version.
’I should find a way to get one later. I don’t have a car, so I might not have much use for it, but as a Transmigrator, I have to have this kind of equipment!’
Lloyd mused to himself.
Just then, he heard a knock on his office door.
"Come in."
After speaking, Lloyd waited a moment.
But no one came in. Instead, there was another knock.
’Huh?’
He walked over, confused, and opened the door.
Then he saw a rift appear in the space before him. It was pitch-black inside, with faint, star-like glimmers twinkling within, yet nothing could be seen clearly.
An arm as thin as cardboard, clad in a white sleeve, reached out from the pitch-black rift. It held a letter, extending it to Lloyd.
On the envelope was a string of symbols that looked very familiar to Lloyd.
Lloyd took the letter. The cardboard-thin arm waved at him and then retracted back into the rift.
The entire rift then vanished without a trace.
