Chapter 208: Chapter 208: Exchanging Letters

Jenkins was a Tier Five Powerhouse, after all, not to mention a famous archaeologist. It didn’t surprise Lloyd that he had some method of instant communication.

What did surprise Lloyd, however, was the speed of his reply. Less than two minutes after Balderes sent the note, another one was spat out from the spatial fissure, which had yet to disappear.

Only a single line was written on it:

"Is something wrong?"

Balderes’s note had only asked for Elolo’s address, but Old Zhan was no fool and immediately guessed something was wrong.

Balderes showed Jenkins’s reply to Lloyd, asking for his input.

Lloyd, naturally hoping Old Zhan would join the rescue, nodded and added,

"I also hope to make the acquaintance of this ’Black Soldier.’"

Balderes now knew how to reply. He scribbled furiously in his notebook, first briefly introducing his new friend, the ’Black Knight,’ and then mentioning that the ’White Bishop’ was being abused by her father and needed help.

He then tore out the pages, folded them into a small square, and tossed it into the spatial fissure.

This time, a reply from Old Zhan wouldn’t be coming so quickly. Lloyd used the downtime to take out the music box he had made earlier and asked Balderes for his opinion.

Balderes, of course, gave it extremely high praise. He was particularly surprised by the miniaturization and portability of its design.

"I can’t believe there’s this way of interpreting and handling it! It’s brilliant!"

He clearly noticed that this idea—using a music box to replace the exorbitantly priced bell, along with the specific methods involved—overlapped with his own design, and his brow furrowed slightly.

But he didn’t mention it. Perhaps he thought it was no big deal—a simple coincidence. Or perhaps he didn’t mind, since the other man had, after all, shared the miniaturized and portable design with him.

The two chatted for a while about topics related to Orbital Mechanics, until a spatial fissure opened up on the workbench and spat out Jenkins’s reply.

Lloyd and Balderes paused their academic discussion and read Old Zhan’s reply together.

The very first sentence was a greeting to Lloyd:

"It is an honor to meet this ’Black Knight.’ It is also an honor to have earned his trust and his willingness to share the Venerable’s instructions with us. And, of course, it is the greatest honor to be able to help ease the Venerable’s worries."

He used the word "honor" three times in a row to express his sincerity before getting to the point:

"Regarding the ’White Bishop’s’ situation, I am not questioning her current predicament. I simply cannot understand her father’s actions. After all, she was able to join our conference in the first place precisely because it was her father’s wish..."

Old Zhan went on to describe the full story of how Elolo joined the conference.

To put it simply, a Prophet who was a friend of his was approached by a father, a man lost and confused about his daughter’s fate. This father sought out the Prophet, hoping to catch a glimpse of his daughter’s [Destiny].

This Prophet happened to be a member of the ’Option Sect.’ Through a series of [prophecies], the resulting options were truly horrifying.

[Silence], [Waiting], [Endurance], [Death], [Oblivion]

These were the only options he saw...

This was obviously not something he could present to his client, so the Prophet thought of Old Zhan and recommended the father to him.

As it turned out, it was Old Zhan’s ’Path Sect’ approach that found a potential solution. He saw a different outcome for the girl and identified the fork in the road that would determine her Destiny.

However, both the ’final outcome’ and the ’fork in the road’ were quite vague. He only knew that she could survive and live well, and that the ’fork’ pointed toward a ’Secret Underground Association.’

The matter should have ended there, and Jenkins had no intention of letting the girl join his conference. But the father produced a large check, demonstrating his immense sincerity, and mentioned that his daughter was so gifted she had naturally achieved [Enlightenment] without any ritual.

And so, the Human Future Conference gained a ’White Bishop.’

Upon reading this, Balderes said irritably,

"So that’s why the old man is always defending her! Even when she constantly threatened to quit the Association, he’d always talk her out of it and pull her back in. I thought she must be some kind of super-genius who could decide the fate of humanity. Turns out this is the real reason?"

’So that’s why the timid and weak Elolo was allowed to stay in the conference,’ Lloyd thought, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. ’Her father has the superpower of money.’

"Er... Sir Black Knight, allow me to clarify. I’m not like her. That old man came to my door and recruited me personally. There was absolutely no money involved."

Balderes explained hurriedly, afraid Lloyd would get the wrong idea.

"I believe you."

Lloyd nodded, and the two of them continued to read.

It was precisely because of this story of Elolo’s admission that Old Zhan had felt the profound, multimillion-dollar weight of her father’s love, which made his current abuse of his daughter so incomprehensible.

Yet Old Zhan tried to justify himself in the letter:

"When I met her father, I sensed a heavy sense of worry from him, along with a numb confusion and weariness. He didn’t have the air of a High-ranking Powerhouse at all; he was just a father who had worried himself sick over his daughter. It reminded me of some of my own experiences, which is why I decided to let her join my conference."

’Another slacker powerhouse?’

With Jenkins as a prime example, Lloyd was becoming somewhat accustomed to this type of slacker High-ranking Powerhouse.

At the same time, he shared Jenkins’s confusion. The father described in the letter was a world apart from the monstrous abuser he had imagined.

’Did something happen to cause such a drastic change in his personality?’

’Or was Elolo’s simple wish to go out and see the world really that unforgivable? Did he really have to punish his own daughter like this?’

In the remainder of the letter, Jenkins stated that he didn’t know Elolo’s specific address either; his few communications with her had also been conducted in this same manner.

But he wasn’t sure if Elolo could still receive letters via the chessboard, or what kind of reaction her drastically changed father might have.

Of course, if the Black Knight was willing to give it a try, he could write a letter to probe the situation.

Lloyd didn’t answer immediately, instead looking at the last paragraph of the letter:

Old Zhan mentioned that he was currently with several powerhouses from the [Wisdom] system. He described them as knowledgeable and influential figures and asked if he should inquire about their views on the matter.

Lloyd thought for a moment, then replied,

"He can try asking around, but please tell him to be extremely discreet. The Venerable does not want too many people to know of His revival."

Balderes nodded and began to write the reply, adding a good word for Jenkins:

"You can rest assured on that point. The old man is very tight-lipped."

In his heart, however, he was mulling over another piece of information:

’He mentioned ’revival’? So it’s true? No wonder the Venerable’s image by the chessboard looked so worn and ancient... Oh, no, I mean, it had a unique historical charm.’

’Then are the Venerable Master’s contact with us, and the presence of His two Beloved, all for the sake of this ’revival’?’

’But what could have happened to Him that He would need to be revived?’

Just then, Balderes suddenly felt his inspiration throb and twitch, warning him not to think any further.

As a Tier Four of the [Wisdom] system, his ’Inspiration Warning’ was far more precise and acute than that of Extraordinary Beings from other systems. He hastily reined in his Thoughts, not daring to let his mind wander any further.

This Inspiration Warning, however, also confirmed that his previous speculations weren’t far from the truth. At the same time, it gave him an even deeper sense of the Venerable’s mystery and power.

After all, this was a Supreme One whom the Attendants here called ’great.’ Even while He was still reviving, His two Beloved alone were formidable enough...

As Balderes reached this thought, he finished writing the letter and sent it back to Old Zhan.

Then, while waiting for Old Zhan’s reply, he resumed his conversation with Lloyd about Orbital Mechanics.

......

Jenkins was currently in a camp in the wilderness. It had nothing to do with the Great Pioneering; there were only simple tents, no defensive measures, and no extra people. Including him, only seven people were present.

Yet the place felt exceptionally safe, giving him an unprecedented sense of security.

Of the other six people, five were Eighth Tier and one was Tier Six.

And the Tier Six individual was his former client, Hoyland.

With no other way out, the client had finally accepted Jenkins’s persuasion and decided to surrender to the people of the [Wisdom] system.

But as a condition and a guarantee, Jenkins had to accompany him. Hoyland had stated that he would only pay the remaining exorbitant fee after his own safety was confirmed.

Old Zhan gritted his teeth and decided to go for it.

Coincidentally, in the past two days, he had heard from a few old friends in the city that several powerhouses from the [Wisdom] system had arrived near the Eternal City, almost as if to align with Hoyland’s [Destiny].

This couldn’t help but make Jenkins once again marvel at the power of the Supreme One, because this ’fork in the road’—guiding his client to surrender—had been pointed out by the Venerable himself.

And so, in a wilderness camp not too far from the Eternal City, Jenkins met those powerhouses.

The powerhouse leading them was shrouded in a black robe, his face concealed by a metallic mask shaped like a human face. He floated constantly in the air, looking neither human nor ghost.

And the moment his client saw this powerhouse, he collapsed powerlessly to his knees, his body going limp, and could only say with a helpless, bitter smile,

"To think I’d end up in the hands of the Radiant Sect after all... Well, it is an honor to meet you, Chief Judge Tirtus."
