Chapter 60: Chapter 60: Heh~ Courting Death

The townsperson who had been split in two instantly dissolved into a pile of letters, lines, and symbols that scattered and vanished into the air.

"So that’s how it is... I remember now!"

Lloyd whispered, quickly bending down to carry his sister on his back. Then, grabbing Desda with one hand and his blade with the other, he charged toward the town entrance.

With the aid of his Swordsmanship, the slow-moving townspeople were no match for him. They dissolved into letters and symbols as Lloyd forcibly carved a path out of town.

He broke into a jog, fleeing toward a light in the distance.

It was another brightly lit town.

But as the three of them drew near, the familiar sounds of revelry and music returned, and a joyous atmosphere once again filled the air.

On the side of the road was the same sign, written in bright red letters:

’Welcome to Arkham Town’

A lovely young woman held a wreath of flowers while a handsome young man sang and danced, welcoming new guests at the town’s entrance.

Desda shivered at the bizarre sight. She quickly pressed closer to Lloyd and asked:

"How... how are we back here? And that place before... what was it?"

As she spoke, she looked up and saw a confident smile spreading across Lloyd’s face. The sight frightened her, and she stumbled back, asking with a tremor in her voice,

"Why... why are you smiling?"

"Whew... Don’t worry. I know what’s going on now."

Lloyd said, taking Desda’s hand again so she couldn’t run away. He then explained,

"Right now, we’re a pair of partners from a newspaper. Our names are... ugh... I can’t remember. Let’s just call ourselves... Rock and Belle."

"We were in the countryside for an interview, and on the way back, our car broke down. We had no choice but to find lodging in the nearby town of Arkham, where we got caught up in a terrible conspiracy..."

Evelor, clinging to Lloyd’s back, suddenly opened her eyes wide.

"Huh? Isn’t this one of the stories that was submitted to us?"

Then it dawned on Desda, and she remembered.

"Yes, yes! I read that submission! It was a really exciting story!"

"Right! It’s good you two realize that. So, right now, I’m the male lead, Rock, you’re the female lead, Belle, and she’s the child we meet at the beginning of the story who escaped from the town... let’s call her Lily."

Lloyd spoke with excitement, looking eager to test his theory, as if he’d finally figured out the puzzle. He pointed his blade at the young men and women who were luring them into a trap.

"Rock and Belle ignored Lily’s protests and insisted on entering the town. They encountered all sorts of bizarre dangers, barely escaped with their lives, only to find themselves back at the town entrance... We must have reached that part of the story."

Evelor quickly added, trying to remember,

"Umm... let me think... After that, I think they faced more dangers, and then they uncovered the town’s conspiracy. It was a group of criminals behind it all..."

Lloyd nodded, his understanding of the situation growing clearer.

"Yes, but the criminals are just a smokescreen. The true culprit, the one causing all of this, is a runaway Holy Artifact that was lost due to the Saint’s Favor Court’s negligence."

Desda added,

"Right! I remember now, too. We’re about to face all sorts of dangers and have a bunch of close calls... So, should we follow the story and start carefully looking for clues?"

But Lloyd just shook his head.

"Since we already know how the story ends, there’s no need for that..."

With that, he strode toward the young men and women. His long blade fell like lightning, turning them into letters and symbols.

"We can just kill all these monsters!"

In the story, the main characters were ordinary reporters, too weak to even truss a chicken. They couldn’t do anything but run fast. A single townsperson could back them into a corner, and they had to rely on the terrain and traps just to barely escape.

Their survival ultimately came down to their intelligence and guts, probably relying on things like passion, courage, friendship, bonds, love, hope, and... you know... possibilities?

Lloyd, however, chose to skip the puzzle-solving part and go straight for the slaughter.

The monsters looked strange and eerie, but they had no real fighting ability and were defenseless against Lloyd’s blade.

He led the two girls on a rampage from the entrance all the way to the festival square, turning any townsperson who dared to approach into characters, just like an author deleting a manuscript.

In less than half an hour, the town fell completely silent.

"Whew... If I remember correctly... the town sheriff is one of the criminals in disguise. Let’s go get him."

Lloyd shook his aching arm and glanced toward the police station.

Knowing the plot, Desda and Evelor had also relaxed, treating the whole thing like a game.

"I didn’t realize you’d gotten so strong, Lloyd."

"Goes without saying! My Yi has always been the best!"

The three of them then continued on to the police station.

According to the original story, the runaway Holy Artifact was hidden in the sheriff’s safe, and the combination was his daughter’s birthday.

All they had to do was find it and burn it, and the story would come to a happy end.

However, just as the three of them stepped into the police station, something changed.

A strange black mist began to fill the air, creeping toward them from all directions.

This wasn’t in the original story.

By the time Lloyd realized what was happening, the mist had completely surrounded them, cutting off any path of escape.

Desda began to panic again, her voice trembling.

"What’s going on? This part wasn’t in the story, was it?"

The words had barely left her lips when several tentacles shot out from the black mist, wrapping around her and dragging her inside.

"Desda!"

Lloyd’s eyes flew wide. He scrambled to put his sister down so he could rush in and save Desda.

But Evelor clung to his neck, refusing to let go. "Don’t go..." she sobbed.

"This isn’t the story we know anymore. If you go in there, Yi, you’ll die..."

"How can you know if I don’t try?"

Lloyd retorted, trying to pry his sister’s hands from his neck.

But Evelor only held on tighter.

"Please, Yi, don’t go. Let’s just go back. Big Sis will do anything you ask, even... that... I’ll do it..."

Her words struck Lloyd like a bolt of lightning. He froze, letting the black mist continue to creep closer.

He lowered his head and closed his eyes, as if in surrender. "I see," he said in a low voice.

"Good! Let’s get out of here," Evelor urged.

With a sudden exertion of force, Lloyd threw Evelor off his back and onto the ground.

"Oof... that hurts..."

Evelor let out a pitiful cry and rubbed her head. Squinting, she looked up at the brother who suddenly seemed like a stranger.

"Yi... what’s wrong?"

"Hmph. You’re not my sister."

A cold sneer touched Lloyd’s lips as he pointed his long blade at the Evelor on the ground.

"My sister would never say something like that. And she would *never* abandon Desda..."

"You vile monster, daring to impersonate my sister? You’re courting death!"

Lloyd seethed, the long-forgotten Spiritual Power inside him beginning to surge once more.

Twisted Realm, activate!

In the next instant, the black mist that had reached him warped into an array of bizarre patterns and symbols, swirling around his body.

Then, his inspiration locked onto the "sister" before him.

"Evelor’s" small body was instantly wrenched into a spiral by an invisible force.

Then it dissolved into a cascade of letters and symbols.
