Leveling Up by Executing Monsters
Chapter 67: The Unpretentious Core SkillChapter 67: Chapter 67: The Unpretentious Core Skill
[Veto Declaration (Twist), LV1 — Condenses Spiritual Power, guided by inspiration, to perform a ’Veto’ on a target. Only effective on targets or concepts that can be understood, producing different effects on different targets. After activating the Twisted System, it will be accompanied by a ’Twist’ effect to a certain degree. Continue learning to increase the skill level.]
Below it, a line of small text provided an additional explanation:
"The true essence of Veto lies in vetoing all impossibilities!"
Lloyd first glanced at the rather brief general description, then lowered his head in thought, examining the new knowledge that had sprouted in his mind. That was the full picture of this skill.
To his slight surprise, not much new information had appeared in his head. In terms of sheer volume, it was less than the previous [Orbital Control].
The skill was actually quite simple. It launched an attack on a target, where Spiritual Power would form an invisible fist or hammer and strike the target’s head from a distance. The resulting damage would be based on his own Spiritual Power, inspiration, and Cognition values, compared against the target’s various Attributes and traits.
’It’s more like a [Veto] on a physical level, which makes it seem less ’supernatural’...’
Lloyd wasn’t disappointed, however. Instead, he took out the Chief Judge’s journal again to review the relevant content. Then, he pulled out the butler’s journal, focusing on his understanding of the [Veto] system.
According to the experience of these two titans, this seemingly unimpressive [Veto Declaration] was actually the most core and critical skill in the entire system. All other abilities in the [Veto] family were built around it.
Initially, it could only perform this kind of crude, physical [Veto]. Only by delving deeper into the system could its truly powerful functions be unlocked.
For example, directly vetoing an enemy’s ability to move, rendering them immobile for a period of time; or vetoing an enemy’s formidable defense, making them more fragile than a newborn kitten.
Or even vetoing the pain in one’s own body, becoming fearless of it for the duration of the effect; or even vetoing one’s own weakness to become invincible.
At even higher levels, one could even briefly Veto severe weather, the natural environment, or even an enemy’s various abilities and effects.
As for what a Saint-level being could Veto, one dared not even imagine.
In short, any matter, ability, or concept that one could understand could be vetoed using [Veto Declaration] to affect it.
It was like the trunk of a great tree—it looked plain and unadorned, and only when its branches were lush and full would its true power be revealed.
Among the six existing orthodox systems, the [Veto] family has always been recognized as the strongest. With powerful offense, high Defense Power, and comprehensive functionality, it is a master of both attack and defense.
At the same time, its potential was extremely high. If one could comprehend a being such as a Deity, then theoretically, one could Veto it as well.
No wonder the butler had described it as ’unreasonable’.
Only two things could be considered weaknesses. First, it demanded a high level of personal knowledge and Cognition, making it slow to develop and difficult to advance.
Second, while it could Veto many things, it was incapable of vetoing the thoughts and consciousness of others.
’Is this perhaps because humans can never truly understand one another?’
’No wonder the library here is so enormous; and no wonder the Chief Judge speaks like a knowledgeable professor...’
’Then again, Radiant City was the third city established during the Fifth Great Expansion, yet it now surpasses the older Eternal City and City of Order in every aspect. Is this also because of the power and versatility of the [Veto] system?’
After these two reflections, Lloyd continued to ponder inwardly.
’[Veto Declaration] is certainly powerful, but what about this (Twist)? Accompanied by a ’Twist’ effect to a certain degree—what kind of effect is that, exactly?’
’No related information has appeared in my mind. Do I have to experience it for myself and figure it out again?’
’Fortunately, I’m not short on ’guinea pigs’ right now...’
Weiya had mentioned to him before that Towers Three and Six, which also bore the responsibility of executing Demons, would use the Demons for various experiments. This gave Lloyd some inspiration. Tower Nine should ’treat them all equally’ as well.
Since the Demons here could no longer contribute much Madness Value, they could at least contribute their experimental value. It could be considered a sacrifice for the anti-Demon cause.
With that, Lloyd stood up and went over to the notice board to see if there were any ’guinea pigs’ left for the day.
But it was already nearing mealtime. The keys for Floor B1 on the notice board had long since been taken by other Executors, and the ones for B3 had been cleared out early in the morning. Only two keys for B2 remained.
A young Executor with a foppish air stood before it, a look of hesitation and conflict on his face. Several times he slowly reached out, wanting to take one of the keys, but in the end, he always pulled his hand back.
Seeing this, Lloyd shook his head to himself, strode forward, and casually plucked one of them from the board.
The young Executor glanced at him and quickly asked:
"Are you... the new Executioner, Senior Lloyd?"
Lloyd nodded, giving the other man no opportunity to get friendly. He pointed to the remaining key and asked:
"Do you want it?"
"Uh... well..."
A complicated expression appeared on the young Executor’s face. He reached out his hand once more, just as hesitantly as before.
Seeing this, Lloyd could only say with a sigh:
"So hesitant? It seems you need someone to make the decision for you."
The young Executor nodded vigorously, thinking Lloyd would offer some words of encouragement to help him make up his mind.
Instead, he could only watch as Lloyd plucked the last key from the board, stuffed it into his own pocket, and turned to leave.
’Uh... didn’t he say he’d help me make a decision?’
He stood there awkwardly for two seconds, then hurried after Lloyd and asked:
"Um... Senior Lloyd, won’t it be a bit much to execute two Demons at once? Do you need an assistant?"
"No need. Both of my parents were eaten by Demons, so I have a deep-seated hatred for them. I prefer to deal with them alone."
"But..."
"No buts."
Lloyd stopped, slightly annoyed, and turned back to say with great seriousness:
"I don’t like to be disturbed while I’m working."
With that, he left the young man standing there in a daze and got on the elevator.
The man stood there foolishly for several minutes before shaking his head in resignation and muttering under his breath:
"The personalities of the Qualified are as strange as they say... Is this person actually excited about ’execution’? Does he enjoy the process?"
"Forget it, forget it... I can’t afford to mess with him..."
