Leveling Up by Executing Monsters
Chapter 70: Seems Like a Troublesome MissionChapter 70: Chapter 70: Seems Like a Troublesome Mission
[Ding! Madness Value +300]
Lloyd had just collected his ’rent’ for the day and was about to head to the library to do some reading when, as he stepped out of the elevator, he caught a familiar whiff of alcohol.
Turning his head, he saw Meditis standing there. Beside her was a Judge who looked even more rigid than Weiya, with dark circles under his eyes and a shockingly receding hairline.
The man’s name was Glaucus. Lloyd had met him a few times before. He was the Chief Judge’s top aide, and rumor had it that he was in charge of every miscellaneous affair, big or small, in the entire Eighteenth District. He was so busy that people jokingly called him "Flawless Glaucus."
As soon as he saw Lloyd, the busy man scurried over and said hurriedly,
"Executioner Lloyd, there is an important mission that requires your participation."
Without waiting for Lloyd’s consent, he grabbed him by the wrist and released a trace of inspiration, only to immediately snatch his hand back as if burned, shaking it repeatedly.
"Hiss... What an extraordinary talent, indeed. No wonder the Chief Judge thinks so highly of you... All right, back to business. Follow me."
Glaucus gestured for Lloyd and Meditis to follow, then hurried off in the direction of Tower Eight—the Joyful Sect’s territory.
Lloyd gave Meditis a puzzled look, hoping to get some information out of her.
But she just shook her head, indicating she didn’t know either, and then started to chug her drink.
A few minutes later, the three of them arrived at the Joy Church in Tower Eight.
Quite a few people were already waiting there. Aside from the unreliable-looking [Shelter]-type Priest whom he had met here once before, there were also two Executioners wearing the same gray uniform as Lloyd.
One had an honest, simple face, like a salt-of-the-earth farmer. The other had narrow, triangular eyes and a gloomy aura, looking like someone you wouldn’t want to cross.
The rest were a few people from the Saint’s Favor Judgment Court, all uniformly dressed in white lab coats and wearing monocles. They looked like academics.
Finally, Lloyd also spotted three former ’ward mates’—the very same three who had shared a hospital room with him and Meditis after the library attack, and who were later chosen by the Chief Judge and taken away early.
’Is this some kind of patient reunion?’
Over a dozen people were squeezed into the small chapel, whispering in small groups of two and three, seemingly all clueless about what was going to happen next.
Only Meditis seemed to have figured something out. She drained her flask in one go, then leaned closer to Lloyd and whispered in a strange, taunting tone,
"Hee hee, looks like something big is going down, huh? What’s the matter? Feeling nervous?"
"A little..."
Lloyd admitted honestly, scratching his chest.
Meditis continued,
"Hee hee~ Too bad being nervous won’t help you. A bad girl like me isn’t going to offer any comfort."
’Why do I get the feeling she’s the one who’s nervous? Is she just trying to make small talk to distract herself?’
Just as Lloyd was complaining about her in his head, a gentle and refined voice suddenly echoed in his mind:
"Good morning. I have gathered you all here today for an important mission that I hope you can all work together to resolve..."
’It’s the Chief Judge speaking, but he isn’t physically here. Is he using some kind of encrypted communication?’
"To ensure the smooth progress of the Great Expansion, we must now deal with the lingering issue in Tower Three."
The Chief Judge continued speaking. As he described it, Lloyd’s vision blurred for a moment, and then a 3D structural diagram of Tower Three materialized before his eyes. He could rotate it left and right, flip it upside down, and zoom in and out freely, just by thinking. It was incredible.
’This seems to be... an ability of the [Wisdom] system?’
Lloyd recalled the butler’s combat manual mentioning something similar.
’So the Chief Judge has a dual system, [Veto] + [Wisdom]. No wonder he can speak directly into people’s minds.’
The hallmark ability of the [Wisdom] system was to interfere with others’ perceptions, creating things like illusions in their vision to influence their thoughts and consciousness.
It was somewhat similar to the [Story] the butler had previously demonstrated, and to Lloyd’s own [Twisted Realm].
’It feels like these Extraordinary Systems really love to mess with people’s heads. Even the [Veto] system eventually gains the ability to veto someone’s sight and hearing.’
Lloyd complained internally but kept listening carefully to the Chief Judge’s explanation.
The reason so many people had been assembled for this mission, including personnel from the neighboring Saint’s Favor Court, was to execute a high-risk Demon imprisoned on Floor -7 of Tower Three.
Lloyd’s heart skipped a beat when he heard this.
’Floor -7 means Danger Level 7. A Demon of that level, even while imprisoned and suppressed, can’t be dealt with by a single person...’
’The complete sealing of Tower Three was likely because of this.’
A Demon that had reached this level couldn’t be one of the more common Demon Ghosts; it had to be something far more troublesome.
But the Chief Judge never specified what kind of Demon it was. He only explained the operational plan and assigned everyone their tasks.
To put it simply, the mission required Lloyd and the other three Executioners to enter their designated cells and execute the Demon inside at the exact same time.
Everyone else was in a support role.
But the Chief Judge never once mentioned the Demon’s true nature, as if he were deliberately holding something back.
When he finished his explanation, the 3D diagram in front of Lloyd dispersed and began to transform.
In the bottom left and right corners of his vision, a pocket watch and an ’X’ symbol appeared. In the top left corner, four lines of small text listed his specific assignment—
’Clear your mind and continuously repeat in your heart: Don’t think too much, Don’t Ask Too Much.’
’Proceed to cell 704. When the countdown timer reaches 15:00, execute the Demon within.’
’Execute the Demon within 30 seconds. You must leave the cell by the 14:00 mark.’
’If you encounter any unforeseen circumstances, immediately touch the ’X’ insignia with your inspiration. It can save your life.’
The pocket watch had clear markings and hands, and had already begun a 60-minute countdown.
Everyone else was likely seeing the same thing. The timers were all synchronized to ensure that the group could execute the plan on schedule.
It made Lloyd feel like he was playing a video game; all it needed was a health bar at the bottom and some buttons on the right for switching characters, using skills, and dashing.
’Is the [Wisdom] system really this powerful?’
"Well... that is all. Please, everyone, remember at all times: Don’t think too much, Don’t Ask Too Much."
After the Chief Judge’s final sentence, the voice in their minds fell silent.
He still hadn’t explained just what kind of Demon they were supposed to execute.
