"One hundred million dollars," Nathan said, loud enough for everyone to hear.
The entire hall held their peace as the words left his mouth. Della’s eyes widened in surprise and the host’s grip on the microphone grew tighter.
The people in the surrounding rows looked at Nathan like he had pulled a live grenade from his pocket.
The rival’s face lost its colour instantly, his jaw tightening as he tried to process what he just heard. "A hundred...mill..."
He surged out of his seat, his calm demeanor shifting into panic.
"It’s a fake bid! It’s not possible!" He yelled at Nathan. "There is no way you have that kind of money! Host! Audit him!"
But Nathan kept his relaxed pose, casually balancing the paddle on his knee, looking at the man like he was a court jester doing his performance.
The host’s hands were steady as he held the microphone. "We... we have a confirmed bid of... one hundred million dollars."
The rival looked around wildly, but no one was taking his side.
"Going once..." the host called.
The rival looked at Nathan, his mouth opening and closing as he struggled to find words.
The humiliation of being outbid by almost double his maximum price after all he’d said, settled heavily onto his shoulders.
"Going twice..."
Della looked at Nathan, her sharp grey eyes narrowing. The surprise she had was gone and had been replaced by a calculating fascination.
She had lots of questions, particularly about Nathan’s sponsor but watching the man in the silver mask beside them fall apart was a bit too satisfying to interrupt.
"Going thrice..."
Nathan let out a slow, relaxed breath. If there weren’t a lot of people surrounding him, he would have laughed.
As the host raised his gavel, he gave the man one last glance like a predator to a prey.
"SOLD!"
The gavel slammed down with a loud clap, sealing the sale.
A huge round of applause echoed from the audience and some people in his row moved to congratulate Nathan on winning the auction.
The rival collapsed back into his seat, staring at the floor in a daze.
"It’s not possible..." he muttered to himself, his voice cracking. "He’s cheating... He has to be..."
Nathan turned his head slightly, a sharp smile on his lips. "What’s the matter, friend? I thought a man was supposed to know his place."
The man’s knuckles tightened
Before he could say anything else, the host came to take Nathan away. "Hello sir, please come with me to finalize the payment."
"Of course," Nathan replied and followed the host while Della moved behind them.
The host led him to an office. The room was stylish. Dark wooden panels lined the walls, and a single crystal chandelier cast warm light across a wooden desk.
A few leather chairs surrounded the room, and a painting of a landscape hung behind the desk.
The host gestured for Nathan to sit, then settled into his own chair. Della stood near the door, her arms crossed as her eyes scanned the room.
"Congratulations, sir," the host said, his composure fully restored. "That was quite a performance out there."
Nathan smiled faintly. "Thank you. I trust I can pay everything now?"
"Of course." The host pulled out a tablet and tapped the screen. "You’ve won the Dead king manuscript for one hundred million dollars."
He swiped on the screen. "Additionally, you successfully bid on an antique pocket watch for four hundred thousand dollars."
"That’s right."
The host slid a card across the desk with the account details printed on it. "Payment can be made via wire transfer to this account."
Nathan picked it up, studying the numbers.
’You can make transfers to other accounts besides mine right?’
[Yes but accounts not personally affiliated to the host can’t be linked to the system.]
’I’m good with that.’
Nathan set the card down and brought out his phone.
But before he could do anything else, the door swung open and the silver-masked man strolled in.
"Apologies for the intrusion," he said, his voice dripping with false pleasantry. "I hope you don’t mind. I simply had to see this for myself."
He turned to the host. "After all, I’m the second-highest bidder. I have an interest in confirming the legitimacy of the transaction."
The host narrowed his eyes but looked to Nathan for approval. Nathan’s expression remained neutral as he shrugged.
"By all means."
The rival settled into a chair against the wall, crossing his legs with an arrogant smile.
"Don’t mind me. I’m just here in case the payment doesn’t validate."
Della shot him a cold look but said nothing. Nathan turned back to the host. "I’ll start with the pocket watch."
He pretended to type on his phone as he willed the system to existence.
’Send four hundred thousand to the auction account on this card’
[Transfer Successful!]

A second later, another golden screen appeared.
[Milestone Reached: Accumulate a System Balance of $50,000,000]
[Ding! Congratulations! You have unlocked a new skill!]
[Skill Acquired: Golden Eyes]
Nathan’s eyes narrowed at the screen. He had gotten a new skill but he didn’t have time to check them out yet.
The host’s tablet chimed and a faint smile appeared on his lips. "The payment for the pocket watch has been confirmed. Thank you, sir."
"It’s only four hundred grand," the rival muttered.
Nathan ignored him, turning to the host. "I’d like to send the manuscript payment in two parts. Is that acceptable?"
The host blinked, then nodded. "That’s perfectly acceptable."
The rival’s ears perked up and he laughed. "Two installments? Could it be that you don’t have the full amount after all?
"What a surprise." He looked around the room. "And here I thought we were dealing with a real player."
Nathan didn’t spare him any glance.
’Transfer fifty million dollars to the auction account.’

[Ding! Congratulations! You have unlocked a new skill!]
[Skill Acquired: Presence]
Nathan’s lips curved slightly, doing his best to hold in his excitement.
’Two skills at once. I’m loving this.’
[Skills acquired later can be fully activated by the host later]
The host’s tablet chimed. He looked down, his eyes scanning the confirmation notification.
"The first installment has been received. Fifty million dollars has been confirmed."
The rival’s smirk faltered for a moment. But Nathan didn’t bother looking at him.
’Transfer another fifty million dollars to the auction account.’
[Transfer Successful!]
[Spent: $50,000,000]
[Rebate (2x): $100,000,000]
[System Balance: $150,108,800.31]
The host’s tablet chimed one last time and he leaned forward in his seat, his mouth slightly opened.
"The second installment has been confirmed. The full one hundred million has been received."
He frowned at his tablet and tapped some parts of his screen before looking at Nathan again.
"For some odd reason, I can’t see your details but I have sent the money to a different account. It’s real. "
"It’s probably a glitch," Nathan replied to which the host gave a nod.
The rival shot up from his chair. "That’s impossible! There’s no way! This is—"
"Enough." The host’s voice cut through the room.
He was no longer the pleasant man calling bids earlier. His eyes were cold, and his tone had a deadly calm.
"The money has been confirmed, thrice. There is no trick. The transaction is complete and he has won the auction."
He frowned at the silver masked man "If you have a problem with the outcome, you can take it up with my superiors."
He interlocked his fingers. "But in this room, at this moment, you will remain silent."
The rival’s mouth opened and closed, struggling for words.
Nathan got up from his chair, a grin plastered on his face.
"I believe," Nathan said, his voice calm and even, "you owe me an apology."
The rival’s head snapped up. "Apologize to you? For what?"
"For calling my bid a fake, implying I was a fraud, wasting everyone’s time and..." He gestured to Della. "For stressing my lovely lady."
Della’s eyes widened behind the mask. "What? I am not–"
"It’s alright honey," Nathan interrupted. "This man owes you an apology for bothering you."
A faint blush appeared on Della’s face as she frowned but she maintained her composure.
The rival’s face burned with embarrassment, his fists clenched at his sides. He glanced at the host as if to confirm.
The host met his gaze. "I believe you owe the Gentleman and his lady an apology."
Beads of sweat formed behind his mask and for a moment, it looked like he might explode.
But soon enough, he lowered his shoulders.
"I... apologize," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper.
"Louder," Nathan said, resisting the urge to smile. "I don’t think everyone heard you."
The rival’s eyes blazed with hatred, but he spoke again, his voice tight. "I apologize. For my... behavior."
Nathan smiled and let out a sigh. "Apology accepted. Now, if you’ll excuse us."
He turned to the host, who stood up.
"It’s been a pleasure doing business with you, sir. You’re welcome here anytime," the host said, extending a hand.
Nathan took his hand. "Thank you."
They both withdrew their hands and the host spoke again. "As a token of my appreciation. Is there a request or something you’d like?"
Nathan frowned. "Not really." Then he leaned close to the host. "Although I’d prefer my name isn’t public information."
The man smiled. "It is a masked auction. You have nothing to worry about. You can head outside if you wish. I’ll have the items brought to you shortly."
Nathan nodded and walked toward the door where Della was already waiting.
Both of them gave the silvered masked man a glance and walked out the door.
The door closed with a soft click, leaving the rival alone in the room with the host, his pride shattered and his hands trembling.
"I believe you’re done here," the host said with narrowed eyes.
The silver-masked man gave a nod, waited for a moment and then left.
As they walked, Nathan pulled up the system screen.
’Apply the 5x rebate ticket to total purchases made.’
[Total Spent: $100,400,000]
[Rebate (5x): $502,000,000]
[System Balance: $652,108,800.31]
A small grin spread across Nathan’s face at the jump in balance.
Fucking hell I’m almost a billionaire? This is crazy
Della watched him from one corner of her eyes as he stared into nothing, her trying to process the amount of money he had just spent on the auction.
She had questions and she was going to get answers, one way or the other.
