Della crossed her arms and Nathan frowned as they both listened to the announcement on the intercom.
"They want us to evacuate but the doors are locked," Nathan muttered. He turned to Della. "Something isn’t right."
Before Della could offer a response, the voice came from the intercom again. She could hear the slight panic from whoever was talking.
["We have learned some guests are locked in their rooms. Please remain calm as we find a solution. Authorities and heroes are on their way."]
"Great," Della said, clearly not inspired by their show of confidence.
She moved to the door and examined the lock, her eyes frowning at what she saw.
"Can you pick it?" Nathan asked.
"No. It’s an electronic lock," She replied and turned to him. "I’m more used to the regular ones."
"Fuck," she muttered under her breath.
Nathan exhaled, doing his best to calm himself. He moved to the balcony looking around and found news and police helicopters, approaching in the distance.
His eyes caught his reflection on a glass. He moved towards it and saw a bit of frost on it.
He moved to the edge of the railing and looked down with a frown.
Della echoed his thoughts. "Forget it. We have to find another way out."
"The only way out is through the door," Nathan said. He paused for a moment to think on how to get it open and soon an idea sparked in his mind.
He picked up his phone and went online, checking WeTube, Breaddit, ZikiHow and other pages. Della watched as he scrolled on his phone. "What are you doing?"
"Getting information," Nathan said. "Thanks to the internet, there are tutorials for all kinds of stuff online." He raised his phone to show Della his screen.
"Including how to pick an electronic lock."
Nathan set the phone on the table and went to the bathroom to get the electric toothbrush.
He also took apart some of the gadgets he had bought and followed the instructions on the screen.
Della watched him work, quiet not to interrupt his focus.
Nathan followed the instructions and also drew from the knowledge obtained from the books he had read. After trying and failing a couple of times.
The sharp sound of a beep came from the lock.
He hit a victory pose with his fist which made Della shake her head slightly with a faint smile. "Impressive but we have to go now."
Nathan moved to get his laptop, stuffing it into his bag. "Grab the manuscript."
Della snatched the glass case from the table as Nathan swept his other items into the bag: The cyberdeck, burner phones, pocket watch and other portable items.
He grabbed his jacket and moved toward the door, then stopped which made Della narrow her eyes.
"What?" she asked.
"There’s one more thing..."
Nathan rushed to the mini fridge and grabbed two bottles and snacks which made Della slap her palm to her face.
"You’re in danger and thinking about snacks?" Della murmured.
"I haven’t tried these and I paid for them," Nathan replied and rushed to meet her outside the room. Some of the other guests were already leaving and some were still trapped in their rooms.
As he turned to leave, Della stopped him. "We should help those still trapped."
Nathan narrowed his eyes. "Last I checked. Neither of us are heroes or have powers. And I’m supposed to keep a low profile."
Della frowned. "I can sit by and watch people die."
"The heroes and cops are on their way. We should leave it to the professionals," Nathan said.
But Della wouldn’t let it go. "Please, Nathan. I know it’s not your problem but just this floor at least."
Nathan narrowed his eyes, assessing his options before agreeing. "I’m not doing this for free," he muttered.
He went back in his suite and got the tools and went to the locked doors.
Minutes later, he had unlocked the doors of the guests trapped on the floor. Della thanked him and he gave a small nod.
"Let’s get out—"
BOOM!
The explosion hit like a truck. The floor shook beneath them, causing both of them to stumble. Della nearly dropped the manuscript.
Before the vibrations had stopped, another explosion happened. Then, another.
A fourth explosion, closer this time, sent a shockwave through the corridor. The walls cracked and windows of suites shattered inward, spraying glass across the rooms.
Both of them shielded themselves with their hands as debris and shards flew around.
The lights flickered, then died. Emergency lighting kicked in, casting the corridor in a dim yellow glow.
Up ahead, Nathan could see a section of the corridor had been reduced to shattered concrete. A second later, Della cried out.
Nathan looked down to see a piece of debris had struck her leg and blood was already seeping from it.
He knelt down and examined it. "Can you walk?"
Della gritted her teeth, trying to stand, but her leg buckled beneath her.
"I’ll help you." Nathan pulled her arm around his shoulder, taking her weight. This close, he could smell the scent of coffee on her breath.
"We need to move."
They made their way to the stairs, stepping over broken glass and debris. The hallway was in chaos. Screaming guests, panicked staff, smoke curling from somewhere nearby.
Nathan moved as quickly as he could with Della leaning on him. The fire alarm was blaring now, mixing with the screams and the distant sound of sirens.
Both of them moved, descending floor by floor. The smoke was thicker now, filling the stairwell with a haze that stung their lungs.
Della was limping heavily, her leg leaving a trail of blood on the steps. Nathan paused for a moment, shifting her weight to catch his breath.
"If this keeps up. A lot of people could get hurt," Della said, wincing as she tried to put pressure on her leg.
Nathan let out a breath. "We have to keep moving."
The words were barely out of his mouth when he heard another explosion somewhere in the building and soon he could feel the building tilting towards one side.
The explosion had shattered a part of the hotel. While the overall structure was still standing, the damages were causing parts of the hotel to crack under its weight.
"Shit," Nathan murmured. He leaned down and grabbed Della, trying to move before the stairs collapsed.
Just as they were near the bottom floor, the top of the stairs gave out and came crashing down. Both of them tried to move quickly but they wouldn’t make it in time.
As the debris got closer, a flash of red and white blitzed through, stopping the wreckage in their tracks.
Nathan looked up to see Lady Might floating above them, her red hair falling behind her as she held the rubble without so much as a sweat.
Nathan got a view of her face which was basically flawless and for a moment he could have sworn they were sparkling.
Of course. She’s an alien after all.
Lady Might’s blue eyes narrowed on both of them as if she was considering if they were worth saving. Both of them didn’t wait to find out as they moved to the lobby while she held it steady.
When they finally emerged from the stairwell, the lobby was a warzone. Shattered glass, overturned furniture, and the smell of burning filled the air.
Reporters and cops and heroes already on scene, their presence was an enhancement to the chaos happening.
A flash of green whooshed past them, moving through the floors. The heroes were on the scene.
Golden boy was nearby, lifting debris off from a trapped guest. He flashed a showy smile and moved on to someone else.
A few other heroes Nathan didn’t recognize were on scene working with the first responders to evacuate civilians.
Della let out a sigh of relief. "They’re handling it."
Nathan guided her toward an exit, keeping his head down. He caught a glimpse of Golden Boy, who seemed more interested in the cameras than the casualties.
He shook his head and kept moving.
They slipped out a side exit, past a barricade of police and emergency responders. Nathan guided Della out of the hotel.
She hissed through her teeth as they approached her car.
"I can’t drive," she said.
"I can." Nathan helped her into the passenger seat, then slid behind the wheel.
He started the engine and pulled away from the hotel, leaving the chaos behind.
The drive was mostly quiet. Della examined her injury while Nathan kept his eyes on the road.
"We’re heading to a hospital," Nathan said flatly to which Della gave a nod.
His hands moved on the steering wheel gently as they put distance between them and the Veridian Crown.
"Thank you," Della’s voice echoed from the passenger seat.
"You’re welcome," Nathan replied. He glanced at the hotel using the sideview mirror.
Outside it, flying heroes and helicopters surrounded the structure, rescuing those trapped in other floors and in their rooms and also stopping broken parts of the structure.
He kept his gaze on the road, wondering who attacked the building and if casualties were involved.
He dismissed the thoughts and pressed hard on the accelerator.
