The first man through the gatehouse door died on Yan Wuji’s blade before Xuan saw him move, and that was when Xuan understood the grey things were the least of their problems now.

The body folded around a foot of Pavilion steel with a knife reversed in its grip and a fang-mark inked under the collar, and Xuan’s stomach dropped a whole floor.

’Mira. Tell me that isn’t who I think it is.’

[ Blood Fang, ] she said, flat and fast. [ The mark’s there, they move like Blood Fang, and they walked through a city of wardens like the wardens were street furniture. That’s why the net didn’t so much as twitch at them. Whatever the first Emperor built that thing to cage, he never built it to cage men. And Xuan, they came straight here. You lit a bonfire on this hill when you woke the net. Something felt it, and sent these.]

’So we tipped our own hand.’ He got Marrow Dragon up as two more slid through the gap. ’Wonderful. Who’s holding the leash? Tianlong’s off south with his army.’

[ The right question, and the wrong moment for it. Eight of them. One of you. Move.]

Xuan moved.

He dropped into Cloud Step, and the floor went weightless under him, and where a stride should have left a print it left nothing at all.

He was inside their formation before it closed. Storm Dragon came off Marrow Dragon in a turning cascade, four cuts into five, each one riding the Armorcleave edge through guards that tried to stack qi and shearing them open regardless, and two of the fang-marked came apart before the rest could seal the gap.

Then they sealed it, because these were not the thugs who’d once crawled up a Skyedge mountain to knife a sick boy in his bed.

Qingyue put her spine to his without a word. Snowstorm Veil bloomed around them, a turning wall of white that swallowed the light and dropped the cold straight through the floor, and inside it she saw and they didn’t.

A blade came out of the murk at Xuan’s flank and found Frostbind waiting, webbing over with ice and bursting when the man forced it, and Qingyue opened his throat with Crystal Edge on the way past and was already hunting the next.

Yan Wuji held the door with the two sword-brothers he’d carried down the mountain, Jin and Luo, the three of them turning the breach into a wall of Pavilion steel. It held while Blood Fang tested it, and it stopped holding the instant their elder came through.

He arrived last, the way the dangerous ones do, and the whole temperature of the fight bent around him.

Older, unhurried, a long spear of dark iron in his fist with something wet crawling the length of it that Xuan’s eye refused to read as ordinary.

The weight rolling off him sat a full realm over anything else in the room.

[ Golden Core. ] Mira, every scrap of dry burned off. [ And blood cultivation, that spear drinks what it cuts. You’re Foundation, Xuan. Whatever he says next, do not let him turn this into a duel.]

"Lin Xuan." The elder knew his face, and knowing it turned Xuan’s blood to river-water. "You’ve been trouble for a long while. Longer than you’d guess. There are people who’ll sleep easier the night the mountains finally give you up."

"Can’t say I know them." Xuan kept Marrow Dragon up and read the spear, the reach, the wet thing crawling the haft. "Enlighten me. Because whoever’s glad rode south with forty thousand men, and you’re standing in a tomb waving a wet stick."

The elder smiled, and gave him nothing, and that nothing said plenty.

Then it stopped being a fight Xuan could steer and turned into one he could only survive.

The spear moved, and the wet dark leapt ahead of the point in a lash that crossed the gatehouse quicker than iron should.

Xuan met it with Coiling Dragon and felt his whole arm go dead where the blood-qi kissed it, the redirect working and costing him twice what it should have. He gave ground. Behind him, the wall came apart.

He heard it before he saw it. Jin’s shout, bitten off halfway.

By the time Xuan turned, the boy was already down, the blood-lash sliding red out of a wound that had opened him collar to hip, and Luo was roaring his name into the noise, and Yan Wuji’s face had gone to that far cold country with something splintering behind it.

"Jin-" Yan Wuji lunged for the elder, and Xuan caught a fistful of his robe before grief could hand him to the spear.

"He kills you next, and he wants it." Xuan hauled him back a step. "That’s the whole trick. Don’t pay it."

The truth of the thing settled over Xuan. They’d taken the mechanism and they could not keep it.

The net had handed them every warden in the capital and handed them nothing against the one enemy who could undo all of it - a Golden Core with a drinking spear and a pack of killers no ward would ever touch, and the only anvil that could hold this gate was Bo Ren, still down in his tower, still waiting on a signal that would reach him far too late to save any of this.

And then the elder stopped looking at Xuan and looked past him, at the princess with a bound hand and a sword she was raising anyway.

"There she is." He said it like a man who’d finally found the thing he’d come for. "The one I was actually sent to collect."

He went for Xinhua, and the whole gatehouse tilted toward the single worst outcome standing in it - the heart the entire rebellion beat around, three strides from a spear that ate qi, with a numb-armed strategist and a grieving swordsman and a girl of ice, every one of them half a step too slow.

Xuan threw himself across the stone to cut the elder off, already certain, down in the marrow of him, that he would reach the man a heartbeat after the spear reached her.
