Limitless Cultivation System: From Trash to Immortal
Chapter 248: The WallXinhua’s first cut hit her brother’s guard and did nothing, and that set the tone for everything that came after.
The hall split into two fights in the space of a breath. Along the back wall, Tianlong’s escort came off the stone at Yan Wuji and Bo Ren’s guard, and that became its own war, a dozen picked blades against a grieving swordsman and a handful of tired men, loud and desperate and entirely separate. Xuan spared it one look and trusted Yan Wuji to keep it off their backs, because he had to. The escort was the price of getting Tianlong alone, and Yan Wuji was paying it.
That left the three of them, and the Second Prince, and the empty throne watching over all of it.
Xinhua led, the way she’d said she would. She went at her brother with everything the training yard had ever put in her, and Xuan watched her fight the best fight of her life and saw exactly how far it fell from enough.
She was good. She’d have taken apart anyone in that hall but the man she was actually facing. Her sword found the lines, the openings, the places a lesser cultivator would have bled from, and Tianlong was never where the cuts arrived. He turned her blade with a wrist. He stepped inside her reach and out of it before she could punish. He met her best with the bored ease of a man who’d sparred her a thousand times as children and won every single one. He didn’t even draw the long saber at his hip. He fought her with an empty off-hand and a blade he never fully committed, and it was worse than a beating, Xuan understood, watching her jaw go tight. He was correcting her. Like a tutor.
Qingyue didn’t let her carry it alone. She came in on Tianlong’s flank the instant his attention bent toward his sister, and for the first time he had to move in earnest. Snowstorm Veil bloomed around the three of them and dropped the light to nothing, and Xinhua pressed the cover for all it was worth, and when Tianlong’s saber finally cleared its sheath to carve the storm apart, Qingyue’s Frostbind caught the blade at the crossguard and webbed it white.
For half a breath, the Second Prince’s sword was frozen in his hand.
It should have been the opening. Xinhua threw herself at it, and Xuan felt his own chance lifting, and then Tianlong broke the ice with a pulse of qi that rolled off him like heat off a stove, shattered Frostbind to glitter, turned Xinhua’s cut aside on a bracer, and drove his elbow into her chest hard enough to fold her in half.
Xuan stayed out of the man’s reach on purpose, and he could see it grating on Tianlong that he did.
He wasn’t going to trade cuts with a full Golden Core. That was a quick way to die and a quicker way to lose Xinhua the fight, because the moment Xuan got carved open, she’d break to save him, and that would be the end of all of them. So he did the only thing that made sense. He worked the edges. He threw Severing Dragon Roar across the hall whenever Tianlong overcommitted to his sister, crescents of Dragonvein intent screaming in from angles the man couldn’t cover all at once, forcing him to spend movement he’d rather have spent killing her.
It kept Tianlong honest, and it didn’t hurt him.
The Roars carried the Armorcleave edge, the same edge that had sheared a Golden Core general’s defense clean through at Northreach, and Tianlong read them coming and answered every one. He turned them with the saber before they could bite. He slid a shoulder past them. He let one break across a wall of qi he raised and dropped as easily as breathing. Passive armor, Armorcleave shears. A Golden Core who sees the cut coming and chooses to meet it is a different problem entirely.
’Mira. The Roars aren’t getting through.’
[ Because he answers them, ] she said. [ Same as he answers everything. The edge works, Xuan. You’ve watched it work. The edge was never the problem. The problem is that he never holds still long enough to eat one. Take his answer away, and the wall is just a man with a sword.]
Xuan turned that over, watching Tianlong knock his sister back a third time without bothering to finish her. ’So I need him held. Truly held. Long enough that he can’t turn the cut aside. And nothing we’ve thrown at him holds for more than half a breath.’
[ Then you need the one thing that holds longer than half a breath, ] Mira said. [ And you happen to be standing next to the only person in this hall carrying one in her pocket.]
Qingyue. Heart of Winter. The one strike in her whole art built to freeze a cultivator’s meridians solid for a full breath, even one a rung or two above her. Long enough to take a man’s answer away. Long enough to open a wall.
But knowing the answer and living long enough to use it were two different animals, and Tianlong had decided he was finished being patient.
The change came with no warning at all. One moment he was correcting his sister like a bored tutor, and the next the boredom fell off him and something genuinely cold moved in behind it, and the flat of the blade became the edge. He stopped playing. He caught Xinhua’s next cut, trapped her own sword against her body, and opened a long red line across her ribs with the saber he’d finally decided to use. When Qingyue lunged to cover her, he backhanded a fist of raw qi into her chest that threw her the length of the dais and left her down and gasping on the steps.
Then he had Xinhua by the throat.
He lifted her off her feet with one hand, her sword arm pinned useless, her blood running dark down the front of the throne she’d bled a whole city to sit in. And he looked past her at Xuan with the calm of a man who’d already counted the room and found nothing in it that could stop him.
"This is the part where the boy from the dead sword school throws his life away trying to save her." Tianlong said it almost gently. "Go on, then. I’ll wait. I’ve had a good day, and I’d hate for it to end early."
Xuan looked at the wall that had eaten everything they owned, at Xinhua choking in her brother’s grip and Qingyue folded on the steps, and did not throw his life away. He made himself think instead, cold and quick, the way he’d thought over a hundred game boards, because there was exactly one move left on this one, and one breath to set it up.
Qingyue was down, but she wasn’t out. And the only thing in the world that could pin a Golden Core in place long enough to shear him open was lying on the steps between the two of them, dragging in air, waiting for someone to buy her the half-second she needed to get to her feet and finish what her whole art was for.
He just had to buy it. And the only price the Second Prince was still willing to take was the one he’d just asked for out loud.
’Mira. If I walk into that, does he take it?’
[ Every time, ] she said, quiet. [ His pride is the tallest wall in this room. It’s also the one with the crack in it.]
Xuan let Marrow Dragon drop a fraction, opened his guard where Tianlong could see it, and stepped forward into the reach of a man who could kill him without trying, offering the Second Prince the one thing in the hall he wanted more than the throne.
