Limitless Evolution As a Snake
Chapter 170: From Pool Noodle To High-End TattooRich and clean and genuinely beautiful, and then the tail, not a tail anymore, just smoke. Dark red ink bleeding out into the air like someone dragged a brush through water, trailing behind me wherever I go, curling and drifting and never quite settling.
I picture it. Not just fancy scales. I can actually see it in my head, the way the light would catch the glossy, almost liquid texture.
No more chunky monster; now I look like something off a high-end tattoo sleeve. A far cry from when I was a sentient shoelace that could barely get over a curb. This is the slow-motion hero shot, wind blowing through hair I still don’t have, smoke trailing behind me like I just slithered out of an explosion I definitely caused on purpose.
Intangibility Mode: On command, your physical form dissolves into a swirling cloud of red ink-mist, allowing you to slide through door cracks, sewer grates, ventilation shafts, and floor gaps.
My jaw, if I had one, would be on the floor. Can I turn into mist? Slide through cracks? Old Mate, that’s not an evolution. That’s a jailbreak-in-a-can.
[System: Keep reading, champ.]
Physical mode, solid scales, permanent smoke tail, decorative koi fins down my dorsal line like some kind of samurai ridge. Pros: unmatched stealth, infiltration, combined with venom immunity, uncatchable phantom.
I’m basically sold; I’m already thinking about how many locked doors I could slide under, how many enemies I could just vanish in front of like a cheap magic trick, how many bedrooms I could- oh yeah, okay, focus.
This is amazing, this is genuinely the best option so far. Why do you sound like you’re bracing for something?
[System: Cons.]
I freeze.
There’s a cons section? For this one?
[System: Yeah, mate. One line, it’s real short, real sweet.]
The panel scrolls down half an inch. One single line sits there under the pros, all by itself, like it’s embarrassed to even be mentioned.
Cons: you’re a fish.
I read it twice. Then a third time, mostly because I assume I’m misreading it, or there’s a typo, or maybe Old Mate spilled beer on the keyboard again and this is some kind of glitch.
Old Mate, it says ’you’re a fish. Is that a typo, or is the system telling me I’m bad at grammar, or is this an actual thing?
[System: Bit of both, honestly. Manual’s got a beer stain right over the fine print. But yeah nah, that’s accurate. You’d be a fish. Koi, the ornamental. The kind rich blokes keep in ponds and name after their ex-wives.]
I’m a snake; I’m currently a snake. With wings and two dicks. How is ’fish’ the weird part of this?
[System: Look, mate, I don’t write the lore; I just read it out to you in a voice you’ll listen to.]
I stare at the koi pattern description again. Red and white scales. Ink-brush style. Drifting smoke tail. It does sound like something out of an anime opening, all slow pans and dramatic music, some ancient spirit serpent guarding a shrine somewhere in the mountains.
"Wait, is this a Japanese-themed evolution pack? Did somebody at the system HQ just get back from a trip to Kyoto and decide to reskin an entire branch of my bloodline?
[System: Mate I don’t know what HQ looks like. Might be a shed. Might be a server farm in someone’s nan’s garage. Either way, don’t overthink the flavour text.]
I’m not overthinking it; I’m just saying, red koi, ink-brush aesthetic, smoke tail, samurai fins, it’s giving very specific vibes for something that’s apparently also just... a pond fish with a mist gimmick.
[System: To be fair, koi are pretty tough for pond fish. Survive winters, live decades, symbol of perseverance and all that. Real deep cut lore if you’re into it.]
I don’t care about the symbolism, Old Mate, I care about the part where I turn into a fish, and someone nets me at a garden party.
[System: Nobody’s netting you, mate; you’re spectral half the time.]
The other half of the time I’m a shiny red fish with legs I still don’t have.
[System: You never had legs to begin with, don’t act like this is a new development.]
He’s got a point, and I hate that he’s got a point. I hold my coil for a second, tail muscles doing that clench thing again. The more I think about it, the less fish bothers me. Wait, the gears are turning. "Does this mean I could slide under any door? Like... anywhere? Bank vaults? Corporate offices? Watch people type in their security codes over their shoulders? Eavesdrop on conversations I was never meant to hear?" A truly diabolical thought occurs to me.
Could I just... drift under Lyra’s bathroom door while she’s in the shower? Not to do anything, just... observe. For science. Honestly, the more I think about it, the more unkillable smoke ghost that slides under doors.
Starts to sound like exactly the kind of broken, unfair advantage I want coiled up and ready to strike. Venom immunity plus straight up not being solid enough to hit. That’s not a weakness; that’s a cheat code wrapped in a pretty paint job.
Screw it, I can feel the muscles around my jaw tighten in satisfaction. Fish snake smoke bomb it is.
[System: Bold choice, mate. Bold, dumb, extremely on brand.]
I contain multitudes, Old Mate.
[System: You contain a fish now. Congrats.]
Not a fish. I’m already annoyed at myself for caring this much, but the branding matters. It’s a Koi Smoke Serpent. Regal. Fancy. The kind of thing you see in a legend, not in a pond.
[System: Right, my bad. A fish, but for wankers like yourself.]
And I’m still a snake. The ’sentient pool noodle’ days are over, mate. It’s time for an upgrade in how we talk about me. I’m deadly, majestic, the whole package.
[System: Yeah nah, still a snake. That bit never left.]
