Limitless Evolution As a Snake
Chapter 199: One Truth, One Kiss, Zero Legs"Can we just," she says quietly, "stay like this, you know, for a while. No parties, nothing exciting, just this?"
"Of course," I say, and mean it more than I’ve meant anything all week. "Yeah, we can do that, plus I have things I want to do with you two in the casino while it’s closed."
The smoke hand keeps working Lyra’s shoulders. The wine keeps flowing; the duck disappears course by course. I stop counting how many smoke hands I have floating around—one for wine, one for Lyra, a couple for feeding myself. This is what being an apex predator is all about. Total, absolute, Michelin-star comfort.
Twenty-thousand-dollar couch, Michelin-star leftovers and two women who somehow still want to be here after tonight.
I could get used to this.
Cherry’s breathing goes even slower, then stops being words-adjacent entirely. Her horn stumps twitch once against my scales, and her whole weight settles into me like she’s decided gravity only applies to everyone else in the room now.
Asleep, just like that. Mid-sentence, practically.
I don’t move, honestly, it would be illegal if I did, wouldn’t dream of it. She’s got maybe thirty seconds of guard down a night and I’m not about to ruin it by shifting my tail.
Lyra notices too. She twists just enough to look, careful not to jostle anything, and there’s something soft in her face that she’d probably deny if I called her on it.
"She’s out," Lyra says, voice low.
"Yeah, poor thing’s been through a lot."
"Good, she really needed that." She turns back around, lets my smoke hand keep working the knot at her shoulder, and reaches for her wine with the kind of lazy contentment that makes the whole room feel warmer than it is. "So," she says, swirling the glass, "what did you want to do in the casino? Before we reopen."
There it is. I let the silence sit a second, mostly because I like watching her wait for it.
"Just some naughty things," I hiss.
Her eyebrow goes up; her eyes catch the light. "That’s not an answer."
"It’s the only one you’re getting for now." My tail tip gives a slow, deliberate curl.
"Matt."
"Lyyyyra."
She huffs, but the corner of her mouth is already curling, and she leans back into the couch, into my scales, into the smoke hand still working the tension out of her spine. "You’re impossible."
"Rich, coming from the woman who keeps choosing the snake option."
"That was your fault."
"Everything’s my fault. I’ve made peace with it."
She laughs, quietly so she doesn’t wake Cherry, and the vibration of it travels through her, into my coils, settling somewhere deep in my length. It’s a warm, dumb feeling, my whole body humming in agreement: this is good, keep doing this.
"Fine," she says. "Keep your secrets. But I run half that building, so whatever it is, I’m going to find out eventually."
"I’m counting on it."
I drift up from the couch, uncoiling as I go, careful as hell. One arm of solid smoke forms and slides under Cherry’s knees, another materialises to cradle her back so she doesn’t so much as twitch. She makes a tiny noise against my scales, not even a real word, and burrows in deeper, like I’m a hovering, cloud-soft pillow.
Down the hall, into her new room, blankets already turned down because apparently past-me was thinking ahead for once. I lay her down slow, tuck the blanket up to her chin, and she immediately rolls into the pillow and goes fully limp again.
I float there a second longer than I need to, just looking; she’s beautiful, and she wants to be with me; every day I see her is honestly surprising. Yeah, okay. Moving on before I get weird about it.
Back in the hallway, Lyra’s leaning on the doorframe with her wine glass empty and her eyes doing that half-lidded thing that means she’s had just enough to stop overthinking everything. Good, that’s the version of her I want tonight.
"She down?" Lyra asks.
"Out cold, didn’t even flinch."
"Mm." She pushes off the frame, drifts past me toward the master bedroom like she already knows exactly where this is going, hips doing something unfair in that oversized shirt that definitely isn’t hers, might actually be mine, and looks better on her than it ever did on me, never fit me anyway, being a long straw and everything.
I follow, obviously I follow.
The master bedroom’s got that golden low light going, the kind hotels charge extra for, and the windows are just doing their thing, the whole city laid out glittering underneath us like it’s got nothing better to do than watch. Bed’s the size of a small country. Sheets so soft they feel like they’re judging every other fabric I’ve ever touched.
[System: you could fit at least 4 more girls here.]
Damn, you’re right.
Lyra sits on the edge of it, wine glass finally set down on the nightstand, and looks up at me with her guard so far gone I almost don’t recognise her.
I don’t say anything smooth; honestly, I don’t need to yet.
I just loop a coil of smoke around her ankle, warm and thick, and pull, gentle but firm, until she slides down onto her back in the centre of the bed with a startled little laugh that dies fast when she sees my face.
"Matt—"
"Shh." I drift over her, slow, my body condensing out of smoke into something more solid where it matters, scales catching the gold light. A hand forms from the ether right against her jaw, tilting her chin up so she’s looking straight at me. "New game."
"I don’t like your games."
"What? You love my games? You’ll like this one." I lower my head, pressing the scales just above my eyes, close enough that she can feel the heat coming off me, cool smoke and warm scales all tangled together. "One truth for every kiss. You answer honestly, you get rewarded. You dodge, I take what I want anyway."
