The employee quickly finalised the paperwork before handing the completed documents to Elara.
She took them without a word.
Ethan then grabbed the surprisingly heavy briefcase containing both of their payments and gave the woman a casual nod.
"I think we’re good."
"Congratulations once again," she replied with a polite smile.
It was still surprising that an A Rank was seemingly giving all her money away to another Titled, but it was much less surprising than when Ethan was a mere E Rank.
All Elara sought was food, a place to stay, and someone she trusted. Since she was being provided exactly that, the money she earned from gates didn’t matter to her. It didn’t matter that much to Ethan, but who would turn down all that cash?
The pair then turned and left the Association Headquarters.
Outside, the motorcycle was waiting exactly where he’d left it. The same Black Suit from earlier immediately hurried over and handed him the keys.
"Sir."
"Thanks."
Ethan caught them one-handed before climbing back onto the bike, holding the briefcase between his legs. Elara naturally took her place behind him, her arms wrapping around his waist without hesitation.
"Still scared?"
She immediately shook her head.
"No."
"Liar."
Her cheeks reddened, but she tightened her grip even more to get back at him.
"Okay, okay."
Ethan laughed before starting the engine.
The motorcycle rumbled to life, and they quickly left the headquarters behind, weaving through New York traffic as the afternoon sun stretched across the skyline. Both of them were exhausted in every way possible and just wanted to go home.
Screeeeeech!
The tyres skidded across the asphalt before coming to a perfect stop outside the Black Howl. Only then did Elara finally loosen the death grip she’d maintained around his waist for almost the entire journey.
Neither of them wore helmets, nor had they obeyed a single speed limit. At several points, Ethan was fairly certain he’d doubled it and had even ridden straight past multiple NYPD patrol cars.
One officer had even locked eyes with him.
Ethan had instinctively prepared himself to be chased and was even excited for it. Instead, the officer simply nodded respectfully before waving them through. Another patrol had done exactly the same, almost as if instructed to turn a blind eye.
No lights or sirens.
Nothing.
’Titled really can get away with anything.’
The thought almost made him laugh.
Only a few years ago, seeing a police car had made his heart race for entirely different reasons. Now the same people who would’ve once tackled him to the ground treated him more like an honoured guest than a reckless biker.
It wasn’t difficult to understand why.
Normal police officers weren’t equipped to deal with Titled, especially not high-ranking ones. When Gates broke and monsters poured into cities, it definitely wasn’t the NYPD standing on the front lines.
It was people like Ethan and Elara.
People who had been granted supernatural abilities and willingly risked their lives to stop entire districts from being wiped off the map.
Compared to that, speeding on a motorcycle barely registered.
’This is fucking awesome.’
His grin widened.
He had freedom, money, strength, and respect - it was everything he had always been after, and his pursuit of it had even cost him seven years of his life.
Though there was one massive downside...
Way too much attention.
The moment the motorcycle rolled to a stop, heads turned, conversations stopped, and an unnatural silence settled. That’s when they were ambushed by civilians and reporters alike.
"That’s Ethan, right? That lunatic really is a Titled now."
"Is that the Blood Demon with him?"
"She’s hot, but damn, is she scary."
"How does Big Mark know these two?"
It wasn’t hard to find out where someone lived or where they spent most of their time, and for Ethan and Elara, that was the Black Howl. But he didn’t expect it to be this much, and it was somehow getting worse.
Within seconds, reporters who had been in the area also began swarming in, with phones and cameras flashing in every direction.
Ethan sighed.
That’s when the Black Howl’s front door opened, and Mark stepped outside. The moment he saw the pair riding a motorcycle, the tension he’d been carrying for nearly an entire day melted away.
He let out a long sigh, but his was one of relief.
"Thank God."
They were alive, and that was all that mattered.
His eyes naturally drifted to the expensive-looking bike they were riding, then back up at the pair that hadn’t moved apart. Elara remained seated behind him, her arms loosely around his waist.
’They really are a good match.’
The thought came to him completely naturally.
Unfortunately, the crowd only continued growing, and it didn’t seem like they could talk here.
"Can we get a picture?!"
"Mr Crowe! What’s your Title? And what should we call you?"
"Miss Veyne, are you a vampire?"
"What was it like inside the Gate?"
"Is it true that you killed a dragon with your bare hands?"
Questions flew from every direction, and someone even asked Ethan to sign the back of their phone case.
’I don’t even have a signature.’
Ethan just waved his cast as if to say that he couldn’t, though it wasn’t very convincing considering he had just driven a motorcycle. Meanwhile, Mark pushed through the crowd and finally reached the two of them.
"Head to the house; they prepared a massive meal while you were gone."
Ethan didn’t need to be told twice.
His stomach immediately growled, having only had beast meat for the past day, which didn’t taste bad but couldn’t be compared to his aunt’s cooking.
"Sold."
He picked up the heavy briefcase he somehow managed to hold between his legs and casually tossed it toward Mark.
The large man caught it with a grunt.
"Whoa."
It was far heavier than expected, but before he could even ask how much was inside, Ethan had already started the motorcycle.
"Meet you there."
Mark gave him a questioning look, since people surrounded them, so they couldn’t just drive off. But all Ethan needed to do was look back at Elara, and s if she could read his mind, she suddenly gathered her mana.
In an instant, they disappeared from where they were and reappeared further down the street.
"That was awesome."
It was Ethan’s first time experiencing Elara’s Instant Displacement, and he couldn’t help but want a skill like it.
All those who had just seen Ethan and Elara teleport along with their motorcycle were in awe. As many Titled as there were, witnessing their abilities firsthand was still rare. After all, it was forbidden to use them outside of gates, gate breaks, or private training.
But before they could ask questions anymore, the motorcycle shot away.
Mark watched them disappear around the corner before looking down at the briefcase in his hands.
’I’d better put this away quickly.’
Shaking his head, he pushed past the crowd and carried it inside the Black Howl and locked it away with the rest of Ethan’s growing stash of cash.
A few minutes later, he climbed into his ancient sedan.
The engine coughed, spluttered, and almost died before reluctantly starting.
"Come on, baby."
He patted the dashboard.
"You’ve got one more trip in you."
The old car rattled loudly as he pulled away from the curb, following the route Ethan had taken. Compared to the sleek motorcycle roaring through the city, Mark’s battered car looked ready for retirement.
Yet somehow, it always managed to keep going, much like its owner. And like them both, the attention persistently followed Ethan and Elara wherever they went, including Mark’s family home.
But Ethan understandably didn’t take as kindly to it this time...
