The third knock faded into the darkness.

Nobody moved.

I stared at the Black Door below us.

I couldn’t see the entire thing.

Only a narrow section was visible through the darkness at the bottom of the staircase.

Black metal.

No handle.

No hinges.

No decoration.

Yet somehow...

It looked familiar.

The woman beside me had gone completely pale.

Lucien wasn’t smiling anymore.

The First Reader looked like he wanted to run.

And the older version of me simply stood there.

Waiting.

"You know who’s behind it," I said.

Nobody answered.

I looked at Lucien.

"You know."

He looked away.

"Yes."

"Who?"

"Someone you shouldn’t meet yet."

"That’s not an answer."

"It’s the only one I can give you."

I looked at the woman.

She slowly shook her head.

"Don’t open it."

"Why?"

"Because the person behind that door isn’t waiting for Adrian Cross."

She glanced toward the older version of me.

"They’re waiting for him."

The older me smiled.

"She’s right."

I stared at him.

"Then why did you bring me here?"

"I didn’t."

"You said the door would open when I remembered."

"Yes."

"Then you knew this would happen."

"I knew it was possible."

He stepped down another stair.

"But I didn’t know who would answer."

Another knock echoed from below.

Everyone flinched.

Knock.

The sound was quieter this time.

Almost polite.

The First Reader whispered,

"It’s asking permission."

I frowned.

"Permission for what?"

"To enter."

The older me shook his head.

"No."

"That’s not what it’s doing."

The First Reader looked at him.

"Then what?"

"It’s reminding us."

"Of what?"

The older version of me looked directly at me.

"That we already opened it once."

The words hit me like a hammer.

I suddenly saw another memory.

A black corridor.

My hand resting against a door.

The woman screaming behind me.

Lucien trying to stop me.

The First Reader standing farther away.

And me...

Opening the door.

The memory vanished before I could see what happened next.

I stumbled.

The woman caught my arm.

"Don’t force it."

"I saw..."

"I know."

"I opened the door."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why did I forget?"

"Because you asked us to make you forget."

"Who is us?"

She hesitated.

"All of us."

I looked at Lucien.

He nodded reluctantly.

"The reset required everyone who knew the truth to participate."

"Everyone?"

"The Author."

"The First Reader."

"The Editor."

"Me."

He paused.

"And you."

I stared at him.

"What did I do?"

"You wrote the final instruction."

"What instruction?"

Lucien looked at the Black Door.

"You wrote..."

He stopped.

The woman finished it.

"If I ever return, don’t let me open the door."

My stomach dropped.

"But I opened it."

"Yes."

"Then why didn’t you stop me?"

The woman looked at the older version of me.

"Because you did."

I stared at her.

"What?"

"You stopped yourself."

The older me finally spoke.

"You closed it from the other side."

The staircase went silent.

I looked down.

The Black Door remained shut.

"You were there."

"Yes."

"On the other side."

"Yes."

"What did you see?"

He didn’t answer.

"What did I see?"

He looked at me for a long time.

"Your future."

That made no sense.

"How?"

"The door doesn’t lead to a place."

"It leads to an ending."

The First Reader nodded.

"That’s why it was sealed."

The Editor’s voice came from behind us.

"Not because of what was inside."

We turned.

She had appeared at the top of the staircase.

Her clothes were covered in dust.

One sleeve was torn.

But she was alive.

The First Reader looked relieved.

"How did you get here?"

"The Scriptorium collapsed."

She looked down at the Black Door.

"I followed the pages."

Her eyes met mine.

"You need to leave."

"No."

"Adrian."

"I need answers."

"You won’t like them."

"I’m done caring."

She stared at me.

Then sighed.

"Fine."

She slowly descended.

"The Black Door isn’t a prison."

"Then what is it?"

"A boundary."

"Between?"

"Stories."

She reached the bottom step.

"The world you’re living in is one story."

"The life you remember is another."

"The life you forgot is another."

"And beyond the door..."

She stopped.

"...is the place where they overlap."

I looked at the Black Door.

"So it’s a connection."

"No."

"Then what?"

"A correction."

The word felt wrong.

"Correction of what?"

"Reality."

The Editor’s eyes hardened.

"Every time the Story creates a contradiction, it pushes the contradiction toward that door."

"That’s why my old identity is there."

"Partly."

"What else?"

She looked at the older version of me.

"Your original ending."

The older me laughed quietly.

"Still dramatic."

"Still alive."

"Unfortunately."

They stared at each other.

There was clearly history between them.

I was beginning to realize that everyone in this place had known me longer than I knew myself.

And I hated it.

"What was my original ending?"

Nobody answered.

I asked again.

"What was my ending?"

The older me stepped down until he stood directly in front of me.

"You died."

The answer was simple.

No hesitation.

I stared at him.

"When?"

"At the Black Door."

"How?"

"You opened it."

"And?"

"You saw what was waiting."

"What was waiting?"

He looked toward the door.

"The Author."

Lucien immediately stepped forward.

"Enough."

The older me ignored him.

"You saw the Author standing on the other side."

"What did he do?"

"Nothing."

"Then why did I die?"

"Because you realized something."

"What?"

The older version of me smiled.

"You realized the Author wasn’t writing the story."

The Black Door shook.

The older me continued.

"The Author was reading it."

I stared at him.

The realization connected to everything we’d discovered.

The Reader.

The Story.

The Archive.

The Author.

The endless drafts.

"Then who was writing?"

He looked at me.

"You."

Silence.

I laughed.

It wasn’t funny.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"You already did once."

"No."

"You wrote the first sentence."

"I don’t remember."

"You weren’t supposed to."

The Historian’s Notebook suddenly opened.

A new sentence appeared.

The first sentence belongs to the first person who remembers it.

The older me pointed toward the page.

"That’s why you had to forget."

"Because if you remembered..."

"The Story would recognize you."

The Black Door shook again.

This time, a thin crack appeared across its surface.

White light spilled through.

The woman stepped backward.

"No."

Lucien drew something from beneath his coat.

A short black blade.

The First Reader immediately looked at him.

"You brought that?"

"I expected this."

"You knew."

"I suspected."

"Same excuse."

Lucien ignored him.

The crack in the door widened.

A voice came through.

Soft.

Calm.

Almost affectionate.

"Adrian."

My heart stopped.

I knew that voice.

Not from this life.

From the hospital.

From the memory.

From the moment before everything disappeared.

The voice spoke again.

"You promised you wouldn’t forget me."

My fingers went numb.

The woman closed her eyes.

Lucien looked at me.

"Don’t answer."

The older version of me whispered,

"Let him speak."

The First Reader shouted,

"No!"

The voice behind the door laughed softly.

"I knew you’d come back."

The crack widened.

I could see an eye through it.

A human eye.

Familiar.

Painfully familiar.

Then a hand appeared.

Pale fingers wrapped around the edge of the door.

The woman whispered a name.

The name I had been trying to remember since waking in the Archive.

The person I had apparently chosen to forget.

The person I had promised to save.

My chest tightened.

I finally remembered.

Not everything.

Just enough.

The hospital bed.

The rain.

The brass key.

The black book.

The voice.

And the person lying beneath the blanket.

The person I had left behind.

The person I had failed to save.

The person I had erased from my own memory because remembering them hurt too much.

My eyes filled with tears before I even understood why.

The voice behind the door whispered my old name.

And this time...

I answered.

"I remember you."

The Black Door exploded open.
