Reality listened.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
No explosion.
No system notification.
No mysterious voice.
Just silence.
I stood in the middle of Alisster with my hand raised toward the crimson sky, waiting for something to happen.
Nothing did.
Ryan slowly looked at Noah.
"Did he just threaten reality?"
Noah shrugged.
"I think so."
"Is that even possible?"
"At this point, I’m done asking."
My father grabbed my wrist and lowered my hand.
"Don’t do that again."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because you don’t know what you’re calling."
"I wasn’t calling anything."
"Then what were you doing?"
"Changing the Listener."
His expression hardened.
"That’s worse."
The black-eyed woman hovered above us.
She no longer looked amused.
She looked afraid.
That alone told me I’d discovered something important.
"You can’t do that," she said.
I looked up.
"Why?"
"Because there is only one Listener."
"There was."
"No."
Her voice became louder.
"There must be one."
"Why?"
"Because reality needs a witness."
I smiled.
"Then reality can have more than one."
The sky cracked.
A sound like glass breaking echoed across the entire city.
The black-eyed woman suddenly disappeared.
Not teleported.
Erased.
I stared at the empty space where she had been.
My father looked at me.
"What did you do?"
"I don’t know."
Then thousands of voices spoke simultaneously.
Some were male.
Some female.
Some belonged to children.
Others sounded ancient.
Some were human.
Others weren’t.
All of them said the same thing.
"We hear you."
The city went completely still.
People stopped.
The doors between worlds froze.
Every version of Alisster became silent.
Then another voice spoke.
Mine.
But not from my mouth.
It came from everywhere.
"We remember."
A strange pressure spread through my chest.
My knees nearly gave out.
Noah caught me.
"Adrian!"
"I’m fine."
"You don’t look fine."
"I said I’m fine."
"You’re literally shaking."
I looked at my hands.
They were glowing faintly.
Not with energy.
With memories.
Images moved beneath my skin.
My mother’s face.
The original Adrian.
The academy.
The Last World.
The first question.
Then something I’d never seen before.
A massive structure.
A tower surrounded by darkness.
At its top was a single door.
I saw myself standing before it.
But I wasn’t alone.
There were countless figures beside me.
Every version of myself.
Every discarded possibility.
Every person who had ever remembered me.
They were all watching.
The vision disappeared.
I gasped.
My father stared.
"What did you see?"
"A tower."
"Where?"
"I don’t know."
The First Reader stepped forward.
"I do."
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked toward the horizon.
"The Tower of Witness."
I frowned.
"What’s that?"
"The place where the first reality was observed."
I stared.
"You mean the first universe?"
"No."
He shook his head.
"The first observation."
"What’s the difference?"
"Everything."
He looked at me.
"Reality existed before anyone understood it."
"But observation gave it shape."
"The Tower was built by the first beings capable of remembering."
"Who were they?"
The First Reader smiled sadly.
"Nobody knows."
"Because they’re forgotten."
"Exactly."
The Editor stepped beside him.
"But the Tower wasn’t destroyed."
"Where is it?"
She pointed upward.
I looked.
The red sky had changed.
The cracks had formed a massive pattern.
A constellation.
A tower.
I stared.
"It’s in the sky."
"No."
The First Reader shook his head.
"It’s behind it."
I looked at my father.
"What does that mean?"
He sighed.
"It means we have to leave this reality."
Ryan groaned.
"Again?"
Noah laughed.
"At least we’re getting good at it."
I ignored them.
"How do we get there?"
The First Reader looked at me.
"You open the door."
"What door?"
"The one that appeared when you changed the Listener."
I looked around.
There was nothing.
Then I felt something behind me.
I turned.
A door stood in the middle of the street.
It wasn’t red.
It wasn’t black.
It wasn’t white.
It was completely transparent.
I could see through it.
Behind the door was a gigantic tower floating in endless darkness.
I stepped closer.
The door opened by itself.
A voice whispered.
"Only the Listener may enter."
I looked at Noah.
He immediately shook his head.
"No."
"What?"
"Don’t even think about going alone."
"I have to."
"No."
He stepped in front of me.
"Every time you say that, something terrible happens."
"That’s not true."
"The laboratory."
"The Last World."
"The red door."
"Reality splitting."
"The black-eyed woman."
He counted on his fingers.
"Do I need to continue?"
I sighed.
"Fine."
"You aren’t going alone."
Ryan raised his hand.
"I’m coming too."
Marcus nodded.
"So am I."
Ethan and Daniel followed.
My father stepped forward.
"No."
I looked at him.
"I’m coming."
"You said nobody could enter."
"That was before."
"Before what?"
He smiled.
"Before you changed the rules."
We stepped through the door.
The moment I crossed the threshold, everything disappeared.
Alisster.
The sky.
My friends.
My father.
Everything.
For a moment, I was alone.
Then I heard footsteps.
I turned.
Noah was behind me.
Ryan.
Marcus.
Ethan.
Daniel.
My father.
The First Reader.
The Editor.
All of them had crossed.
Ryan looked around.
"Okay."
He stared into the endless darkness.
"Where exactly are we?"
The Tower stood in front of us.
It was enormous.
I couldn’t see its top.
Its walls were covered with thousands of glowing symbols.
Some were words.
Some were equations.
Some looked like languages that didn’t belong to any civilization.
And some...
were names.
I walked toward the entrance.
One name appeared brighter than the others.
ADRIAN CROSS.
I touched it.
The entire tower activated.
Lights appeared.
Doors opened.
Voices filled the darkness.
"The Listener has returned."
Another voice answered.
"Correction."
"The Listeners have returned."
I froze.
My father whispered,
"Adrian..."
I turned.
Behind us stood people.
Hundreds.
Then thousands.
Then millions.
Every version of me.
Different ages.
Different clothes.
Different personalities.
Some were human.
Some were monsters.
Some were machines.
Some were barely recognizable as living beings.
But all of them had my eyes.
Noah stared.
"That’s..."
"Yes."
Ryan swallowed.
"That’s a lot of Adrians."
One stepped forward.
He wore an old military uniform.
"You’re the current one."
I nodded.
"I suppose."
Another version stepped forward.
A woman.
She had silver hair.
"I remember when you were thirteen."
Another.
A child.
"I remember when you were six."
Another.
An old man.
"I remember when you were nothing."
I stared.
"What do you want?"
The military version answered.
"Nothing."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because you called us."
"I didn’t."
"You changed the Listener."
I understood.
When I’d said reality could have more than one listener...
I hadn’t created new listeners.
I’d awakened the old ones.
Every discarded version.
Every forgotten possibility.
Every memory.
They were all capable of hearing now.
The Tower shook.
A voice came from above.
"Collective observation established."
Then another.
"Reality no longer dependent upon singular witness."
My father stared upward.
"What does that mean?"
The First Reader answered.
"It means the Story doesn’t need Adrian anymore."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He smiled.
"For the first time..."
"You are free."
I didn’t know how to react.
Free.
The word felt strange.
I’d spent so long believing I was trapped inside systems, stories, worlds, memories, commands.
But now...
I wasn’t necessary.
Reality could continue without me.
The Tower’s central door opened.
Inside was a circular chamber.
At the center stood a chair.
Beside it was a machine.
And on the machine was a message.
FINAL OBSERVER PROTOCOL.
I stepped closer.
The machine activated.
A hologram appeared.
My mother.
Not the mother I’d known.
Not the younger woman from the memories.
This was her true form.
She stood inside the Tower.
She looked directly at me.
"If you’re seeing this..."
She smiled.
"...then you’ve reached the place I prayed you’d never find."
I swallowed.
The recording continued.
"I know you’re angry."
"I know you’ll want answers."
"But before you ask anything..."
She looked away.
"...you need to understand why I lied."
The hologram changed.
She was holding the baby version of me.
"Adrian was never supposed to become the Listener."
My heart stopped.
"He was supposed to become the first free person."
The First Reader whispered,
"Impossible."
My mother continued.
"But someone changed the plan."
The image distorted.
A black silhouette appeared behind her.
The same presence from the red doorway.
The same thing that had been watching from beyond reality.
My mother turned toward it.
"No."
The silhouette reached for her.
She screamed.
The recording ended.
The chamber went dark.
I stared at the empty space.
"Who was that?"
Nobody answered.
Then the Tower spoke.
"THE CREATOR."
I froze.
Ryan whispered,
"Creator?"
The voice continued.
"THE FIRST OBSERVER."
The Tower shook.
"THE ONE WHO ASKED THE FIRST QUESTION."
I felt something cold run through me.
"Who?"
The lights turned toward me.
A single door opened at the far end of the chamber.
Someone stepped through.
A man.
Black hair.
Pale skin.
My face.
But older.
Much older.
He looked exactly like me.
Except his eyes were completely black.
He smiled.
"Hello, Adrian."
I couldn’t move.
"Who are you?"
He laughed.
"You really don’t remember."
He stepped closer.
"I suppose that’s my fault."
"Why?"
"Because I erased you."
I stared at him.
"Why?"
He stopped in front of me.
"Because you were going to become something even I couldn’t control."
"What?"
He smiled.
"The first human capable of creating reality without needing anyone to remember it."
The Tower began collapsing.
My father shouted.
"Everyone move!"
The older version of me didn’t react.
He simply looked at me.
"You’ve spent your entire life thinking you’re the Listener."
He pointed toward my chest.
"You’re not."
The darkness behind him opened.
"You’re the Creator."
I felt the world disappear beneath my feet.
And for the first time...
I remembered the very first thing I had ever done.
I had created myself.
