Lord: Starting with Biological Modification
Chapter 275 - 270: Attack from the SeabedChapter 275: Chapter 270: Attack from the Seabed
Rainwater mixed with blood, flowing through the cracks in the stone road, surrounded by the rubble of destroyed buildings.
After the third impact, the harbor’s breakwater collapsed.
Three colossal siege turtles lumbered over the ruins. Their heavy steps shook loose oysters and seaweed. Though many of their carapaces were mangled by Crossbow Arrows, the wounds were far from severe enough to affect their combat ability.
Along the way, they utterly destroyed the docks’ piers and cranes.
Their target was the second, inner wall on the mainland.
"Hold the breach! Use your pikes! Don’t let them break our formation!"
Barton’s voice was hoarse. He swung a captured bone battle-axe, severing an enemy’s tentacle at its base. Blue blood sprayed out, quickly diluted by the heavy rain.
Behind him, the police force formed a faltering defensive line with their bodies and shields.
In the harbor district command post, Laine watched the battle line gradually shrink.
Through the Hive Terminal, his thoughts were transmitted directly to the watchtower atop the inner wall.
[Master, can you blow up those giant turtles?]
[I can try!]
The old alchemist’s beard was soaked with rain, but his eyes gleamed with excitement.
He and a few apprentices worked in perfect coordination, quickly making preparations behind a battlement.
Inside a clay pot were two unstable alchemical liquids, separated by a thin wax seal.
"Now!" He shook the clay pot violently, shattering the wax seal.
The pot immediately grew scorching hot and began to hum.
An apprentice threw the bomb with all his might.
The clay pot traced an arc through the air and smashed onto the turtle’s back.
But it didn’t shatter as expected. Instead, the pot rolled off and landed by the giant turtle’s leg.
A deafening explosion erupted, and one of the giant turtle’s legs was blown clean off!
Blood gushed out like a fountain. Its massive body crashed to one side, crushing several Multi-Armed Race Warriors who couldn’t dodge in time.
On another front, Elvin knelt in the mud and water, his hands pressed against the stone bricks.
As he uttered the final syllable of the incantation, he let out a low shout, as if calling upon an ancient power of nature.
[Woodland Guard]!
The stone bricks and earth before him suddenly buckled upwards, and several two-man-tall Woodland Guards burst from the ground.
They took heavy strides, engaging the Multi-Armed Race Warriors with their thick but clumsy arms.
In the small plaza before the inner wall, muddy water splashed everywhere. The Woodland Guards fought to the death without retreating, temporarily blocking the advance of the enemy’s follow-up forces.
The pressure on the defensive line eased abruptly.
However, Grash was already in a killing frenzy.
He knew full well that if the humans were given a chance to breathe and reinforce their troops, this siege would become even more difficult.
Ignoring the casualties on the front line, he issued an even more frenzied command, driving his reserve forces to march over the bodies of their comrades. They were to take the second wall in one fell swoop, no matter the cost.
Despair began to spread from every corner.
Barrett felt like his lungs were a broken bellows; every breath was tinged with blood. Rainwater streamed down the edge of his eyepatch.
He fought as he retreated, now situated between the breakwater and the inner wall.
Barrett could go no further. His armor was covered in dents and cracks. The wound on his left shoulder was deep enough to show bone, and every heartbeat sent a wave of excruciating pain through him.
Slamming a shield aside with his body and cutting down his opponent with one strike of his sword had exhausted the last of his strength.
’I’m finished.’
A Level 5 Ranger had been observing from the shadows for a long time.
When he saw Barrett half-kneeling on the ground, he knew his moment had come.
He slipped out from behind a pile of toppled crates. His steps were silent, his body low, his four tentacles moving alternately across the ground.
The bone blade in his hand, taken from the tooth of some deep-sea predator, had been sharpened to an extreme degree.
He calculated the distance, the angle, and the gap in the armor at Barrett’s neck.
Suddenly, Barrett’s heart skipped a beat, and he glanced behind him.
’Too late.’
The assassin had already sprung, his bone blade tracing a ghastly white arc straight for Barrett’s neck.
Barrett didn’t even have the strength to raise his shield.
He could only watch helplessly through his one eye as the cold glint of death grew larger.
’This is the end,’ he thought.
Just then, a strange sound overpowered the thunder and crashing waves.
This sound wasn’t heard with the ears, but felt from the soles of the feet, from deep within the bones—HUMMM...
The water in the bay once again rippled in dense, concentric circles.
The assassin felt it too.
His movement faltered for a split second.
It was the keen intuition of a Level 5 Ranger sounding an alarm.
But logic told him his target was within arm’s reach; the kill would take but an instant.
He hesitated for a breath, then decided to finish off his enemy anyway.
In that moment, Barrett had already stumbled a few steps away.
Before the harbor, inside the command chamber of Leviathan One, red lights flashed.
[Energy output overload! Gem temperature is skyrocketing!]
[Ignore it!]
Sea Wolf roared, [Hold steady! Lord Velin needs a stable firing platform!]
Ola and his Knights were all participating in the coordinated control, and the discomfort from the overload made their insides churn.
In Velin’s vision, a three-dimensional map was continuously zooming in.
He locked onto the assassin. He could see every groove on the assassin’s bone blade, as well as Barrett’s clumsy, fleeing steps.
[Whiplash Spike]!
The surface of the harbor suddenly bulged upward into a massive swell.
The next moment, the water’s surface exploded!
A colossal, black-shelled pillar over two meters in diameter burst from the water.
Its speed was unnatural, leaving a trail of afterimages and a piercing whistle in the air.
Just as the Ranger was about to catch up to Barrett, his pupils contracted. Without a second thought, he aborted his attack, forcibly twisting his body into a roll to the side.
A deep black shadow instantly tore through the path where he had just been.
But the black pillar was simply too fast; it still grazed his body as it swept past.
With a SNAP, his tentacles were crippled.
The assassin let out a muffled grunt. The immense force threw him through the air, and he crashed into a pile of collapsed crates.
He struggled to climb out of the wreckage. After a single, horrified glance at the sea, he dragged his heavily injured body away and vanished into the shadows without hesitation.
Having just escaped death, Barrett didn’t even have a moment to catch his breath before he was stunned into silence by the sight before him.
After a brief silence fell over the battlefield, Grand General Grash, standing on the back of a giant beast, stared wide-eyed at the black tentacle slowly retracting beneath the water. A chill shot up his spine to the crown of his head.
Korsh’s warning thundered in his mind.
"Grand General, that is no mere beast..."
Only now did he truly understand.
’This thing... it’s a worthy opponent. A terrifying predator.’
A second, a third... a total of four identical black pillars shot out of the sea from different directions.
Their target was clear—the three siege beasts that were battering the inner wall.
The largest of the beasts was ensnared by the four tentacles.
It let out an enraged roar and began to struggle violently.
The giant turtle was not easily subdued. Instead, it bit down on one of the tentacles. Its massive, sharp beak scraped against the black shell, emitting dazzling arcs of ethereal blue electricity.
This was a battle of titans!
The ground beneath the siege turtle’s feet cracked and splintered as it stomped, trying to break free with brute force.
But the tentacles were clearly stronger, squeezing the giant turtle until it let out a pained shriek.
In that moment, the assault of the Multi-Armed Race’s army fell into chaos.
The Warriors stood frozen, watching in horror as their prized siege weapon was dragged closer and closer to the sea.
A cry from a survivor of the desperate fight pierced the curtain of rain.
"It’s the Lord!" Laine raised his arm and shouted. "Lord Velin has returned to support us!"
This shout ignited the spirits of all the defenders.
The despair that had been suppressed to its absolute limit was transformed in that instant into a flame called "hope."
Cheers spread from the docks to the inner wall, echoing throughout the entire harbor.
The soldiers banged on their shields and weapons, their fighting spirit reignited.
Barrett leaned on his sword and caught his breath.
He wiped the rain and blood from his face. His single eye reflected the immense black silhouette that was gradually surfacing from the sea.
Leviathan One was rising.
Its exterior reflected the cold light of the metal under the flashes of lightning. Eight gigantic tentacles churned the water, kicking up monstrous waves as they battled the three giant beasts.
Barrett grinned, revealing a set of white teeth. His smile was savage and exhilarated.
He raised the Longsword in his hand, its tip aimed straight at the enemy infantry, who had been thrown into chaos by the battle of the titans.
"Brothers!" His voice rose above the wind and rain.
"Reinforcements are here! Now’s our chance! Hold the line and push these bastards back!"
