The atmosphere in Devi's apartment was heavy enough to choke on. The shopping bags, once trophies of a successful outing, were now forgotten heaps in the corner, their bright colors a stark contrast to the storm cloud of Devi's mood. She was a caged animal, pacing the length of the main hall, her bare feet silent on the cool marble. Her arms were wrapped tightly around herself, a self-soothing gesture that did nothing to hide the tremor in her hands. The anxiety rolling off her was a palpable force, making the air thick and hard to breathe.
"I fucked it up," she muttered, more to herself than to us. "I really fucked it up. I ruined everything."
"Who's Aisha?" I asked, trying to break the tense silence, to find a thread I could pull to understand this mess.
Kushi sighed, sinking onto the sofa and patting the cushion next to her, an invitation I gratefully accepted. "Aisha was Devi's office mate," she explained softly, her eyes following Devi's frantic pacing. "They were inseparable. A new best friend, you know? The kind you do everything with."
"It's not my fault!" Devi snapped, stopping her pacing to glare at us, her eyes flashing with a defensive fire. "We were fine! We were best friends until she poked her nose in where it didn't belong." She spat the word 'she' like it was poison.
Her story came out in a torrent of repressed anger and hurt. "I saw them," she said, her voice cracking slightly. "I saw Janaki making out with Aisha's husband. In the parking garage after work. His hands were all over her." She shuddered at the memory. "I did what a best friend is supposed to do. I told Aisha. I told her everything. And what does she do? She kicks the cheating bastard out, which, fine, good for her. But then... she stays friends with Janaki. She fucking chose her over me."
The betrayal was still raw, an open wound she couldn't stop picking at. "It infuriated me. It still does. I couldn't look at her. I haven't spoken to her since."
Kushi's voice was gentle, probing. "Did Aisha ever try to clear things up? To explain?"
Devi's face shuttered. The question hung in the air, unanswered. She just shook her head, her jaw tight. "I need some space," she choked out, turning and fleeing into the bedroom, the soft click of the door echoing in the sudden, deafening silence.
Kushi and I sat there for a long moment, the weight of Devi's pain settling over us. "What did Janaki tell you?" Kushi finally asked, her eyes sharp and knowing, cutting through my feigned ignorance.
I played dumb, shrugging my shoulders. "Nothing, really. Just asked how Devi was doing, how my studies were going. Small talk. She seemed... normal."
Kushi wasn't buying it, but she let it slide. A thoughtful, almost mischievous expression slowly spread across her face. "We should talk to her," she said.
I stared at her, completely floored. "Talk to who? Janaki? Are you insane? After what Devi just said?"
"Why not?" Kushi countered, a wicked glint in her eye. "Don't you want to hear her side? It'll be... naughty. Like being a detective." She stood up, grabbing my hand and pulling me to my feet. "Come on. It'll be fun." Her enthusiasm was infectious, and against my better judgment, I let her drag me out of the apartment and across the hall.
Janaki's door opened after a single, soft knock. She stood there, not in the seductive saree from before, but in a simple, modest house dress, her hair tied back. She looked... humble. A picture of domestic tranquility. "Oh, hello," she said, her voice soft, a hint of surprise in her eyes. "Please, come in."
We sat on her sofa, the same one where she'd been stroking my cock just hours ago. The memory made me shift uncomfortably. Kushi started off calmly, her tone light and friendly. They made small talk about the weather, about the neighborhood, about nothing at all. I just sat there, a nervous knot in my stomach, feeling like a fraud.
Finally, Kushi took a breath and dove in. "Janaki," she began, her voice gentle but firm. "Can I ask you something? What... what really happened between you and Devi? With Aisha?"
Janaki's face fell, the carefully constructed mask of domesticity crumbling to reveal a deep, well-acted sorrow. She sighed, a long, weary sound. "It's a long, sad story," she murmured, her gaze dropping to her hands folded in her lap. "Aisha's husband... he was a serial cheater. A predator. I knew it. I tried to warn Aisha, so many times, but she wouldn't listen. She was blind, so in love. So, I chose the hard way. I had to show her the truth." She looked up, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I seduced him. I made him think he was in control. I expected Aisha to catch us, to finally see him for what he was. But instead... Devi saw them. Devi was the one who had to carry that burden. Aisha was devastated, of course, but since I had always been telling her the truth, she understood why I did it. She knew I did it for her. But Devi... Devi stopped talking to us both, ever since."
It was a masterpiece of a performance. A tragic tale of a woman forced to make an impossible choice for the sake of her friend. I felt a surge of sympathy, a powerful urge to comfort her. "Janaki, that's... that's awful," I said, my voice thick with manufactured concern. "You were just trying to do the right thing."
I reached out and put a hand on her shoulder, a gesture of pure, unadulterated bullshit. She leaned into my touch, a grateful, tearful sigh escaping her lips.
It was at that exact moment that Kushi, who had been watching the entire exchange with an unreadable expression, decided to drop the hammer.
"Are you two fucking?"
The words hung in the air, sharp and clean, slicing through the thick fog of bullshit. My head snapped towards Kushi, my jaw hanging open. Janaki froze, her tearful performance faltering for just a fraction of a second. I was completely, utterly, and totally shocked.
