The text hung in the air, glowing a bright white against the sudden absence of color that had overtaken the world.
Nick drew a breath, held it, and tried to exhale, yet no sound left him. The noise that had threatened to deafen him—the grinding of ancient gears, the hiss of steam, the panicked shouts of Rhea—fell silent. The silence was absolute, and he knew he was no longer within the material plane, though not in the ether either, given the lack of sensation.
Indeed, looking around, he was still where he’d just been, only the world had turned to grayscale. The dust motes floating in the air were locked in place, suspended like insects in amber. A few feet away, the dribble of dark blood leaking from Gaelen’s ruined shoulder had frozen, a string of solid crimson beads hanging over the polished stone. The blue light radiating from Rosmaria stopped flickering, becoming solid, motionless, and cold.
Alexander also stood frozen in the center of the shattered blood circle, his face tilted slightly upward, his robes caught mid-billow in a nonexistent wind.
Nick felt no weight. The pain in his ribs had vanished. The physical laws of the universe had been abruptly suspended, cutting him out of the flow of time and placing him in the System's silent hold.
He had crossed the threshold, after all, and it was time to reap his rewards.
A tremor ran through the frozen world. It began as a subtle vibration that somehow didn’t reach the room, then rapidly escalated into a bone-shaking rattle.
The System was descending. A few times, he’d caught glimpses of it, but they’d all been fleeting, barely worth mentioning compared to what he was feeling now, even though they’d given him so much.
A pillar of light crashed down from a higher dimension, punching cleanly through the ceiling without dislodging a single stone and striking Nick dead center.
There was no physical force behind it, yet he still found himself driven to his knees, overwhelmed by the System’s attention.
His soul ignited in response. At Level seventy-eight, Nick had taken a monumental risk, using his Earth memories of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life to prematurely crystallize his core into a Geode. That shortcut exacted a toll, turning the last twenty-two levels into even more of a crawl. But here, in the crucible of Ascension, that stable foundation became his greatest asset.
As the System's light washed over him, the Geode in his chest expanded. It became a blinding star in the dark, sending out grasping tendrils of raw need.
Almost as an outside observer, Nick watched, fascinated, as his soul began to breathe. The Forge was saturated with volatile, conflicting energies: the dying rot of Alexander's abyssal magic, the residual heat of the divine avatar, the cold might of the Elpen Artifice, and the golden lifeblood of the World. His soul drew them all in, preparing to welcome the System’s Grace.
Such a thing should have torn him apart. Even if he had been able to do anything about it, Nick knew that nothing short of a miracle or a very carefully calibrated ritual would save him, yet he felt no fear.
As chaotic energies rushed through him, the pillar of light burned away the concepts attached to it. The malice of the abyss, the arrogance of the divine, the rigid logic of the Artifice—all were incinerated, leaving only pure, distilled power. This clean fuel poured directly into the Sephiroth structure of his soul, filling the crystallized nodes with pure power.
Then, the agony began.
The human body was designed to channel mana, and his had been forged into something superior, serving as a conduit for the World's energy. However, it was not designed to embody a concept. To reach the Prestige tier, the mortal vessel had to be fundamentally restructured to house a higher truth.
Nick threw his head back, his mouth opening in a silent scream.
His bones felt as though they were turning to glass, shattering into a million microscopic fragments before fusing back together. The blood in his veins boiled, burning away the mortal impurities to make room for liquid ether. His muscle fibers tore themselves apart, stretching beyond their physical limits to accommodate the expanding soul within his chest. It was a violent remodeling of his entire existence, one that he was helpless to stop.
He remembered watching his father undergo this process, though Eugene’s body had been tempered far beyond what it could withstand. Nick had no such strength and would have to rely on the sheer density of his soul to anchor him as his flesh was unmade and remade.
Through the haze of blinding pain, the System spoke, and he clung to it, trying to hold on to his sanity. It communicated in concepts too fast for him to grasp, flashing blocks of glowing text into his mind, weighing the sum total of his existence.

On and on it went, listing everything he’d ever done of note, until the System finally stopped. The light around Nick flickered, taking on a strange, prismatic quality. A deep hum vibrated through the pillar, and he knew the System was analyzing the architecture of his soul, tracing the shape of the Sephiroth back to its origin.

Modifiers applied to Prestige selection.
Nick gasped, his hands clawing at the frozen stone floor as the restructuring of his body peaked. The pain was beyond words, erasing every coherent thought. He was a singular point of pressure, a vessel being filled with an ocean.
Just as his mind began to fracture under the strain, the agony broke and vanished as if it had never been there. His flesh snapped into harmonious alignment.
A wave of healing washed through his newly forged body. The exhaustion of the last forty-eight hours, the ache in his joints, the minor cuts and bruises from the siege, the throbbing in his ribs—all of it was wiped away. His skin knitted together flawlessly. His mana channels, once mere rivulets, were now vast, echoing canyons capable of handling the torrential output of a Prestige soul. He felt lighter yet anchored to the physical plane in a way he’d never thought possible.
His senses sharpened to a great degree. He could see the microscopic fault lines in the brass gears around him. He could feel the density of the frozen blood flowing from Gaelen.
Mortal Vessel Restructured.
Select your Prestige Class.
Three glowing panels materialized in the grayscale void, hovering directly in front of him.
If he had been in full control of his emotions, Nick might have found it in himself to be disappointed that so few options appeared, but that feeling was wiped away when he began reading.
[Heresiarch]
You have built your foundation on rejection. You have wielded Blasphemy against the divine, the infernal, and the mundane alike. This Path strips away all pure elemental affinities, replacing them with far greater spiritual and arcane control. You will become an arbiter of spirituality, capable of unraveling any spell, ward, or divine mandate by your mere presence. Spiritual magic will gain greatly from this choice.
Requirement: Occultist Level 100, Major Feat involving Divine/Infernal defiance, High-level spiritual development.
Nick spent a moment longer rereading. This choice could make him great. He would become nearly immune to foreign interference, and his most esoteric abilities would grow in turn.
He was a bit saddened by the thought of losing much of his elemental abilities, but he was sure he’d be able to compensate over time.
It was an option worth keeping in mind. He turned his attention to the second panel, which glowed with a warm, golden light.
[World-Bound Arcanist]
You have drawn upon the planet's lifeblood to fuel your ambition. You have shaped your soul into a Geode, mirroring the heart of the earth. This Path grants authority over the physical elements. The World will recognize you as a favored son, offering its reserves without the need for intricate weaving. Your spells will carry the weight of mountains and the fury of hurricanes.
Requirement: Level 100, Crystallized Soul, Major Feat involving the World's defense. Kill 100 demons.
It was a tempting offer. The raw, unfiltered power of the elements, backed by the World's infinite reserves. He would become a force of nature like few before him, capable of standing even against the giants with centuries of experience who slumbered across this world.
Yet it felt too narrow, too restrictive. It ignored the esoteric knowledge he had fought so desperately to uncover. An Occultist was an explorer of the hidden, not merely a conduit for raw power.
He moved past it.
The third panel shimmered with multifaceted light, reflecting the alien presence of his Sephiroth soul.
[Eidolon of the Formless]
A path forged by an anomaly. You possess memories of a world of dying mana, and you have forced those foreign concepts into the rigid framework of this reality. You command the elements, yet you can reject them. This Path synthesizes your vast, disparate knowledge. You gain absolute dominion over your esoteric boundaries. Your elemental magic will carry conceptual weight, and your Blasphemy will extend beyond its limits.
Requirement: Occultist Level 100, The Walker of the Second Path (Hidden Feat), Fully Matured Geode Soul. A Great Work while mortal.
Nick stared at the final option. The System had seemingly tailored this class to his unique circumstances. It acknowledged his reincarnation and used the Earth logic he had used to map his soul. It did not ask him to discard his elemental magic or his defiance, and it even merged them into a single, cohesive authority.
It was the culmination of all he had built, all he wanted to be.
Repressing the urge to accept immediately, he went back to the other options, taking his time to read everything again.
He would have really liked more concrete data. How much would his stats increase with each level? How would his Traits be affected?
Unfortunately, no matter how long he stared, nothing more seemed to appear, and he finally realized he’d have to make his choice with what little he knew.
In the end, there was only one option he’d seriously considered. Nick reached out, pressing his palm flat against the third panel.
Upon contact, it shattered into a cloud of glowing dust that rushed into his chest, sinking into his soul, filling the gaps he hadn’t even known were there and giving the chaotic energies there a purpose.
Class Selected: [Eidolon of the Formless]
Prestige Rank up Complete.
The System’s light, which had been his companion since the process began, vanished, and in its absence, Nick’s new power was born.
It built up slowly as more of the power he’d absorbed seeped into his nature, then grew ever faster until it exploded outward. The sheer magnitude of the power surging through his soul created an immovable bulwark in the air, a physical manifestation of his existence that dominated the cavern.
For several seconds, the process continued, spreading through the corridors outside and beyond, filling the entire estate. Then it violently snapped back into his body, compressing into a tight, invisible skin, sealing him away from the mortal plane even as he remained within it.
The grayscale shattered. Color bled back into the world with jarring violence. The harsh blue light of the Elpen Artifice clashed with the dying red embers of the blood-runes. The silence shattered, replaced by the deafening roar of venting steam, the grinding of ancient gears, and Rhea’s screams.
Time had resumed.
