Laundry duty smelled like regret and boiled soap.
Kai stood over a large wooden tub behind the shed, stirring a mess of wet sheets with a long paddle. The lye made his eyes water. Rank E Body Reinforcement kept his arms from giving out as fast as they used to, but it did nothing for the boredom.
Minor Presence Concealment helped a little. A couple of the younger kids walked past without the usual staring. Garren’s group gave him a long look from across the yard and then kept walking. Not gone. Just waiting.
Kai kept stirring.
Two hundred and five Desire Points. A slightly less pathetic body. A stealth passive that makes people ignore me if I don’t do anything interesting. And I’m still washing other people’s bedsheets. Peak reincarnation experience.
He glanced toward the main building. Lira was on kitchen duty today. He could feel her signature through Desire Sense — steady focus mixed with the usual tight worry. She had risked the note this morning. That already put her deeper in his business than most people would accept.
The thought pulled his mind sideways.
She has ink stains on her fingers again. The dress is still too big on her. When she walked past the table this morning the fabric shifted across her chest just enough to remind me she’s not a child. Small. Soft. The kind of body that looks like it would flush easily. I want to see if I’m right.

Idle assessment of primary interest target.
Kai snorted under his breath and kept working.
A shadow fell across the tub.
He looked up. One of Garren’s lackeys — the rat-faced one — stood a few paces away with his arms crossed. He didn’t speak. Just stared. Message received. They were still thinking about last time.
Kai gave him a flat look and went back to stirring. The lackey eventually left.
By the time the midday bell rang, Kai’s hands were raw and his shirt was damp with steam. He rinsed off at the water barrel and was about to head inside when Desire Sense picked up a familiar signature approaching fast.
Lira.
She came around the side of the shed with a bucket in one hand and her booklet tucked under the other arm. Her expression was carefully neutral, but the emotional signature was not. Irritation. Concern. A thin spike of something warmer when she saw he was alone.
"You’re still in one piece," she said.
"For now."
She set the bucket down and checked the yard with a quick glance. No one close enough to hear.
"Garren talked to two older boys from the workhouse group this morning," she said quietly. "They’re not orphans. They come by sometimes to trade. He’s offering them something to help ’teach you manners’ after chores."
Kai leaned on the paddle. "Ambitious of him."
"I’m serious."
"I know." He met her eyes. "Side door again?"
"Side door. And don’t walk the main hallway after dark. Take the long way behind the storage rooms."
She started to turn away, then stopped. Her gaze dropped to his hands for a second — red from the lye — before she looked back up.
"You’re different," she said. "But you’re still an idiot if you think you can handle three of them alone."
Kai almost smiled. "Noted."
Lira held his gaze a moment longer. Desire Sense painted the shift clearly: the worry was still there, but underneath it sat a stubborn thread of personal investment she clearly didn’t want to examine. Her pulse had picked up. Not fear. Something else.
She’s standing close enough that I can see the freckle under her left eye. The collar of her dress is loose. If I reached out I could hook a finger in it. She would probably slap me. Or freeze. Either reaction would be educational.

Proximity + sustained attention.
Bond progress: minor increase.
Lira’s cheeks colored slightly, as if she could feel the weight of his stare. She looked away first.
"Just don’t die," she muttered. "I don’t want to have to find a new idiot to warn."
She picked up the bucket and walked off toward the kitchen entrance. Kai watched the line of her back and the way the dress moved across her hips until she disappeared inside.
He exhaled and checked the numbers.
Desire Points: 216
Still climbing from nothing but attention and conversation. The System was consistent, if nothing else.
Kai finished the last of the laundry, stacked the wet sheets, and wiped his hands on his pants. The afternoon stretched ahead — more chores, more waiting, and a promise of violence after dark.
He had options.
He could stay inside and try to outmaneuver Garren on familiar ground. He could leave early and take his chances in the district again. He still had the Claim Mark unused. One charge. High value.
Rena’s face flickered through his mind — the scar, the pale eyes, the way she had looked at him like a problem she might enjoy solving.
Two girls. Two very different kinds of trouble. One keeps trying to keep me alive. One paid me and walked away. The System wants both. I’m starting to want both. That is either good planning or the beginning of a very expensive problem.
He picked up the paddle again and went back to work, already turning over the evening in his head.
Garren could wait.
The real question was how much further he was willing to push before the orphanage stopped being a safe place to return to at all.
