Kai woke with eight copper and a decision he had been avoiding.

The room on Miller Street looked the same in the morning light. Thin cot. Crooked stool. Chipped basin. The difference was in his head. The orphanage was behind him. Odd jobs would keep him alive. They would not move him forward fast enough. And Lira’s habit of chasing him into the district with stolen coins and warnings was becoming a problem neither of them could keep ignoring.

He washed, dressed, and left two copper on the stool for another night before the tired woman downstairs could ask. Six copper remained in his pocket. Enough to eat. Enough to wait. Not enough to build anything real.

Outside, the district was already moving.

Kai activated Presence Concealment and walked without a clear destination at first. Desire Sense swept the streets in slow passes. He was not looking for Garren. He was not even looking for Rena yet. He was looking for a quiet place to think and a way to turn six copper into leverage.

Lira is going to keep coming. That is the one thing I know. She will keep finding excuses. Side doors. Warnings. Stolen bread. Three copper wrapped in cloth.

If I do nothing, the district will eventually notice the quiet orphan girl who keeps leaving the walls for a boy who does not live there anymore. Soft things break. I have repeated that enough times that it is starting to sound like an excuse.

He bought a piece of flatbread and ate it while walking. Five copper left.

The Claim Mark sat in his status like an unused tool. One charge. Fifty percent more Desire Points from a single target for a full day. Using it on Lira would accelerate everything. Bond. Points. Access. It would also change the nature of whatever existed between them. She would feel it. The System did not do subtle when it came to marks.

I could mark her the next time she appears. Efficient. Cold. Effective. She would become a better investment overnight. The part of me that still remembers being pathetic wants to pretend that is the only reason I am considering it.

The rest of me knows better. I want her closer. I want her looking at me like that more often. I want to know what her voice does when the worry turns into something else. The System will pay me for all of it. That does not make it clean.

Kai turned toward the edge of the market where the lanes narrowed. He needed information more than another porter shift. Information about better work. About who controlled the quieter jobs. About where someone like Rena spent her time when she was not handing packages to orphans.

He was three streets in when Desire Sense caught a familiar controlled signature.

Rena.

Kai did not change pace. He simply adjusted his route so their paths would cross without looking engineered. She was speaking with a lean man near a stack of covered crates. The conversation ended as Kai approached. The lean man left quickly.

Rena’s pale eyes found him without surprise.

"You again," she said. "Still alive. Still thin."

"Working on both."

Her scarred mouth pulled slightly. "You did the delivery clean. That puts you above most of the desperate ones. Do you want another, or are you here to waste my morning?"

"I want better than deliveries."

Rena studied him for a long moment. Desire Sense showed the shift clearly. Assessment. Mild interest. A thin edge of something that might have been approval or warning.

Leather again. Same controlled stance. The scar makes every expression look like a threat. I want to know what she looks like when someone forces her off balance. I want to know if that voice stays this flat when she is not the one giving orders. The System liked her from the first second. I am starting to understand why.

"Better work requires trust," Rena said. "Trust requires proof. You have one clean delivery and a habit of staring. That is not proof."

"Then give me something that lets me prove it."

She was quiet for a few seconds. Then she made a small decision.

"There is a man who owes a debt," she said. "Not a large one. He has been avoiding the usual collectors. He drinks at a place near the east cut after dark. I want to know where he sleeps. Not a confrontation. Not a message. Just the location. You get me that, I get you five copper and a conversation about whether you are worth more than running packages."

Kai nodded once. "Name?"

"Does not matter. You will know him by the burned ear and the green coat. Do not let him see you watching. Do not follow him if he takes a route into the private yards. Information only."

She did not wait for agreement. She simply turned and walked away, cloak shifting across her back.

Kai watched her go, then exhaled.

Five copper and a possible upgrade in status for watching a drunk with a burned ear. Still small. Still useful. She is testing whether I can do quiet work without creating noise. Fair.

He spent the rest of the daylight learning the east cut without looking like he was learning it. Presence Concealment made the waiting easier. Desire Sense made the watching cleaner. By the time evening settled, he had a clear view of the low drinking house Rena had meant.

The man with the burned ear and the green coat appeared after the seventh bell, already unsteady. Kai watched from a shadowed gap between buildings. The man drank. Talked too loud. Eventually left with a stumbling gait.

Kai followed at a careful distance.

The route was not complicated. Two streets. A narrow turn. A boarding house with a cracked sign and no lantern at the door. The man with the burned ear climbed the stairs, fumbled with a key on the second floor, and disappeared inside.

Kai marked the building, the floor, and the approximate room, then left the way he had come.

No noise. No confrontation. Just information.

He found Rena again near the same crate stack less than an hour later. She listened to the location without writing anything down, then counted five copper into his hand.

"You can watch without being seen," she said. "That is rarer than strength in this district. Come back tomorrow after the midday bell. I may have something less boring."

Then she was gone again.

Kai closed his fingers around the coins.

Eleven copper total. A better impression in Rena’s ledger. A locked door waiting on Miller Street. And the same unresolved problem named Lira still sitting in the back of his mind.

He walked back toward Miller Street under the early night.

Somewhere behind the orphanage walls, a quiet girl with ink-stained fingers was probably pretending she had not left that morning. Somewhere in the district, Garren was still telling stories about a rat who ran. Somewhere else, Rena was deciding whether a thin boy who could follow a drunk was worth another step up.

Kai climbed the stairs, paid for the night, and locked the door.

Eleven copper.

A Claim Mark still unused.

And a growing certainty that the next time Lira appeared, he would have to stop treating her careful concern like a free resource.

Soft things broke.

He was done pretending he did not know that.
