The walk back to the net-mender’s room was quiet in the way that meant both of them were choosing not to start the argument on the street.
Kai’s ribs ached with every breath. The cut on his forearm had reopened enough to stick to the fresh bandage. Lira walked half a step behind him, close enough to catch him if he staggered, far enough that it didn’t look like support. Desire Sense stayed open out of habit. No immediate tails. Rena’s intervention had bought them the rest of the night. Nothing more.
Inside the room she bolted the door, turned, and finally let the anger surface.
"You walked into a three-man meet with a half-healed arm and a knife you bought this morning."
"I did."
"You told me to hold distance so I could watch you get hit in the ribs."
"Also true."
Lira stared at him. Her hands were clenched at her sides hard enough that the knuckles had gone white. For a second she looked like she might actually throw something. Then the fight drained out of her posture and left something tireder and more dangerous underneath.
"I’m not doing this again," she said quietly. "Watching from a lane while you try to solve everything with spite and a metal bar. If I’m staying, I’m staying as more than the reason you keep getting cut open."
Kai sat on the edge of the bed carefully, testing which angle hurt least. The answer was none of them.
"You’re already more than that," he said. "That’s the problem. They keep reaching for you because it’s still the fastest way to move me. Rena just spent public capital to stop them. She’s going to collect. When she does, the next job won’t be a list or a middleman. It’ll be heavier. And I don’t know yet what ’heavier’ costs."
Lira sat down on the opposite end of the bed, same careful distance as the night before. The new blouse still looked wrong on her in the sense that it fit. She picked at a loose thread on the skirt and didn’t look at him.
"Then we find out what it costs before she names it," she said. "I can dig. Quietly. There are still people who talk near the workhouse and the laundry lanes if you know how to listen. I don’t need to walk into vats to be useful."
Kai watched her for a long moment.
She’s already rewriting the arrangement. Not asking for permission. Just stating the new version like it’s obvious.A week ago she was sneaking out of an orphanage with stolen copper and warnings.
Now she’s sitting on a rented bed telling me how we’re going to handle a faction tab. I don’t know when that stopped being surprising. I only know I don’t want her quiet and safe in a room while I go collect scars. That’s new. And inconvenient.
"Alright," he said. "You dig. I talk to Rena before she decides to collect in a way we don’t like. Neither of us goes anywhere alone until the shape of the debt is clear."
Lira nodded once. The argument didn’t disappear. It just settled into something they could carry without breaking the room.
They ate the remaining flatbread in silence. Kai cleaned the cut again and rewound the bandage with more care than he had managed that morning. Lira pretended not to watch and failed. When he finished she reached over without asking and tightened the last knot with neat, precise fingers. Her hand lingered half a second longer than necessary. Then she pulled back like nothing had happened.
Sleep came in shifts. Kai took the floor near the door. Lira took the bed. Neither of them slept particularly well.
Morning arrived with grey light and a knock that was too controlled to be casual.
Kai was on his feet before the second knock finished, knife in hand, Desire Sense stretched. One signature. Familiar. Controlled. Rena.
He opened the door a fraction.
She stood alone on the narrow landing, cloak neat, expression already bored with the necessity of the conversation. Her eyes flicked past him, registered Lira awake and sitting up, then returned to his face.
"You’re upright. Good. Saves time."
Kai didn’t move aside. "If this is the collection, say it."
"It is." Rena’s voice stayed flat. "There’s a shipment moving through the lower canal tomorrow night. Not goods. People. South Cut is using a private berth to move three individuals who are worth more alive than dead. I need the berth location, the timing window, and confirmation of the buyers. You get me that, the public capital I spent at the vats is cleared. You fail or get noticed in a way that points back to me, and I stop being the reason the South Cut has to ask permission before they touch either of you."
The shape of the job landed heavy and clean.
Lira spoke from behind him. "People."
Rena’s pale eyes shifted to her for the first time. "Yes. People. The district moves them every week. Most of you just prefer not to look directly at it. I’m asking him to look. The debt requires it."
Kai felt Lira’s attention on the back of his neck like heat.
"I’ll do it," he said.
Rena nodded once, already finished with the negotiation. She gave him a narrow window of streets where information about the berth sometimes leaked, and a time by which she expected results. Then she left without waiting for agreement.
Kai closed the door and turned.
Lira was on her feet, arms folded, face unreadable.
"People," she said again.
"Yes."
"And you’re going to walk into it because she spent money to keep me breathing."
"I’m going to walk into it because the alternative is her stepping back and letting the South Cut finish what they started at the vats." He met her eyes. "You wanted to be more than the reason I get cut open. This is what more looks like right now. Ugly, and shared."
Lira held his gaze for a long second. Then she sat back down on the bed slowly, like someone accepting a weight instead of fighting it.
"Then we do it properly," she said. "No more improvised bars and half-healed arms. We map it. We listen first. And if the berth is real, we decide how much of this debt is actually ours to pay."
Kai watched her start pulling the day into order with the same quiet stubbornness she had once used to sneak warnings out of an orphanage.
The tab had been named.
Tomorrow night the district was moving people.
