The street outside the orphanage was narrower than Kai expected and twice as filthy.
Mud mixed with old straw and what he sincerely hoped was only horse manure lined the edges of the packed-dirt road. Two-story buildings leaned toward each other like drunks sharing secrets. Laundry hung from windows on frayed lines. The air carried the sharp scent of cheap coal fires, fried dough, and too many bodies living too close together.
Kai took three steps away from the orphanage gate and felt the System quietly update.
[Optional Objective Progress: Host has left orphanage grounds]
Reward pending upon remaining outside until nightfall.
He rolled his shoulders, testing the faint improvement from Basic Body Reinforcement. Still weak. Still thin. But the constant feeling that a strong breeze might knock him over had lessened. It was something.
Desire Sense spread outward like invisible radar.
Most of the people moving past him registered as dull, muted colors—boredom, exhaustion, mild irritation. A heavyset merchant arguing with a customer glowed a frustrated orange. A pair of city guards walking in the opposite direction felt flat and professional, almost gray. No real openings. No real interest in a scruffy orphan boy.
Then a flicker of warmer light caught his attention from a side alley.
Kai slowed.
A girl about his apparent age was crouched near a stack of empty crates, trying to drag a struggling, half-plucked chicken back into a wooden cage. Dark auburn hair tied in a messy ponytail. Freckles across her nose. A patched green tunic that had seen better years. She was muttering curses under her breath that would have made a sailor proud.
[Desire Sense]
Target: Unknown Female
Emotional State: Irritation (High) / Focus (High)
Potential Opening: Very Low
Note: Target is currently more interested in the chicken than in anything else.
Kai almost smiled.
Not every girl is going to be a secret magic prodigy with tragic eyes. Sometimes it’s just a girl fighting a chicken. Reality is important.
He kept walking, filing her away as "probably not right now," and continued deeper into the lower district.
The further he went, the more the orphanage’s quiet desperation was replaced by noisy, grinding life. Street hawkers shouted prices. A blacksmith’s hammer rang from an open workshop. Somewhere nearby a woman was laughing too loudly at something that probably wasn’t funny. Children weaved between adults with the reckless confidence of people too small to be worth punishing.
Kai’s stomach reminded him that gray porridge was not a complete meal.
He checked his pockets out of habit. Empty, of course. The previous occupant of this body hadn’t owned anything worth stealing, let alone spending.
No money. No real strength. One Claim Mark. Fifty-three Desire Points. And a System that only pays me for being a degenerate. Classic starting conditions.
He stopped at a small open square where several streets met. A stone fountain that no longer worked sat in the center, its basin dry and cracked. People crossed the space without lingering. Perfect place to stand and observe without looking suspicious.
Kai leaned against the dry fountain and opened his status again, mostly to think.
The locked System Branches stared back at him.
Conquest. Bond. Dominion. Corruption.
He could guess what most of them meant. Conquest probably rewarded taking things—or people—by force or strategy. Bond was obvious. Dominion sounded like large-scale control. Corruption... that one made something low in his gut tighten with equal parts curiosity and warning.
I’m not touching Corruption until I understand the cost. Even I’m not that stupid. Yet.
A new notification slid into view.

Useful. The System was feeding him information just for existing in the space. That would become dangerous later if it ever decided to stop being helpful.
Kai closed the window and started walking toward the direction labeled Eastern Market Row. Food first. Information second. Trouble preferably never, but he wasn’t naïve enough to believe that would last.
He had barely turned the corner when Desire Sense spiked hard to his right.
Warm. Sharp. Focused.
Not the mild curiosity Lira had shown. This was something heavier. Assessing. Hungry in a way that had nothing to do with food.
Kai’s steps slowed.
A woman stood beneath the overhang of a closed storefront, half in shadow. She was older than the orphanage girls—early twenties, maybe. Black hair cut unevenly at her jaw. A dark cloak over fitted leather that had seen real use. A thin scar ran from the left corner of her mouth almost to her ear, pulling her expression into a permanent half-smirk. Her eyes were a pale, washed-out gray, and they were locked directly on him.
**[Desire Sense – Warning]**
Target: Unknown Female
Emotional State: Interest (Calculated) / Predatory Assessment
Potential Opening: Moderate
Threat Level: Elevated
Note: Target is evaluating Host as either opportunity or prey. Possibly both.
Kai’s mouth went dry for an entirely different reason than usual.
Of course. I leave the orphanage for ten minutes and the first interesting woman I run into looks like she skin people for fun and might be good at it.
The woman pushed off the wall and began walking toward him with unhurried confidence. People naturally stepped out of her path without seeming to realize they were doing it.
She stopped a few paces away, head tilting slightly as she studied his thin frame, oversized clothes, and the wooden stick he still carried like an idiot.
"You’re a long way from the orphanage, little lost thing," she said. Her voice was low, rough around the edges, almost amused. "Did they finally get tired of feeding you, or did you grow a spine this morning?"
Kai met her pale eyes and felt the System practically vibrating with attention.
Option one: play the scared orphan and hope she loses interest.
Option two: open my degenerate mouth and see what happens.
He had never been good at option one.
Kai adjusted his grip on the stick, let a thin smile pull at his mouth, and answered.
"Grew a spine," he said. "Still working on the rest. You shopping for something in particular, or do you just collect strays?"
The woman’s scarred smile widened a fraction.
Somewhere in the back of Kai’s mind, the System chimed softly, as if it had just sat down with snacks to watch.
