The lower district went quiet in the way that meant people had decided he cost too much to kill for free.

South Cut stopped buying sightings. Quiet Ones stopped measuring so close. Rena’s cover held. Kai took the leftover days and stacked coin the only way he knew how — small gigs, night runs, guarding desks for men who didn’t want to die over ledgers.

Still broke. Still counting every piece.

Same bastard, different world. Used to scrape copper on Earth. Still scraping it here.

Rena called him in on the last day of the month.

Same room. Same table. This time the paper she slid across had a seal that didn’t belong to the lower district.

"Nightfall Royal Academy," she said. "Capital. Valtheris Empire. Pure merit on the surface. Selection is called the Crucible. Pass or disappear. Someone above asked for a name that doesn’t die easy. I gave them yours."

Kai looked at the seal.

Nightfall. Capital. Academy. Place ranked people go when street Copper stops being enough.

He pushed the paper back.

"No."

Rena didn’t pick it up.

"You’re wasted here. District’s settled enough. Keeping you in it is bad math."

"I said no."

The System hit before she could answer.

[Refusal Detected]

Penalty Protocol Armed

If Host declines Nightfall path: severe bond instability on existing claims. Potential harm to bound partners. Rank regression. Desire Point collapse.

Kai froze.

The text burned.

Harm to them.

Not him. Them.

Lira. Sera.

The white room tried to rise again — chair, smile, the question — and the same unnatural pressure shoved it back down before he could hold onto it.

He stared at the paper.

"...My women apply too," he said.

Rena’s eyes narrowed.

"No. The recommendation is yours. One name."

"Then I don’t go." Kai’s voice stayed flat. "I don’t apply unless Lira and Sera get the same letters. All three of us or none."

Rena looked at him for a long moment. Then she pulled the paper back, wrote two more names, and stamped the seal three times.

"One month," she said. "Get coin. You’re not walking into Nightfall broke. Selection is the Crucible. Merit only. Pass or vanish. I don’t care which."

---

He took the month.

Small gigs. Message runs. Night guard on counting desks. Anything that paid without putting Lira or Sera back in a lane with ranked blades. He stacked coin the way a broke bastard stacks it when the next door is bigger than the last one.

Still broke. Still scraping. Same man who died on Earth with nothing worth remembering.

Lira packed without drama. Sera packed like she had always known the lower district was a temporary board.

On the last night they didn’t sleep much.

---

The bed was too small.

Lira sat on the edge, naked, arms crossed over her chest, face red and furious. Sera sat further back, also naked, one knee drawn up, expression annoyed in the specific way that meant she was allowing this and already hated that she was allowing it.

Kai stood at the foot of the bed.

Hard. Gripping himself. Smug in a way he hadn’t earned and didn’t care.

Goddess of Ass. Look at her. Still furious. Still here. That curve. That stubborn mouth. She called me idiot and stayed anyway.

Goddess of Boobs. Sera. Flat-eyed and annoyed and letting me look. I am a simple bastard in a complicated world and both of you are currently testing every vow I ever made to higher powers.

Lira glared.

"Stop looking like that."

Sera’s voice was cooler.

"Wipe the smirk off or I’ll do it for you."

Kai didn’t wipe it off.

The System pulsed once more, quiet and final for the night.

[Dual Claim Stabilized]

Both anchors active

Resonance threshold met

He stepped forward.

Lira’s blush went deeper. Sera’s eyes narrowed, but she didn’t move back. The bed was too small. The room was too warm. The district outside had finally stopped trying to kill them for a few hours.

Kai climbed on.

What followed was not gentle and not quiet.

He took Lira first — because she was first, because she had stayed, because the rain confession still sat between them. She bit his shoulder when he pushed in and refused to look soft even while her body opened for him. He fucked her through the anger until it turned into something that left her shaking and gripping his back like she still hated how much she wanted it.

Sera watched until he reached for her.

She didn’t make it easy. She never did. She met him with the same sharp control she brought to every job, then lost it in pieces when he got deeper and her legs locked around him. She came with her teeth in his shoulder and her voice breaking on a curse that turned into his name.

He switched between them until the loft was only heat and breath and the sound of two women who still hadn’t forgiven him for being smug and still hadn’t left the bed.

When it was over the candle was gone and the rain had slowed.

Lira lay on one side, face still flushed, eyes half-closed. Sera lay on the other, one arm behind her head, expression annoyed in the specific way that meant she had allowed this and was already recalculating what it cost.

Kai stared at the ceiling.

Goddess of Ass. Goddess of Boobs. I am a simple bastard in a world that keeps raising the price. Thank you for the donations.

Lira kicked him weakly in the shin.

"Stop looking so pleased with yourself."

Sera’s voice was drier.

"Wipe the smirk off or I’ll wipe it for you."

Kai didn’t wipe it off.

Outside, Nightfall waited.

The capital. The academy. The Crucible.

Inside the small room above a closed net shop, two claims sat stabilized under his skin, and for the first time since he woke up in this world, the next door was bigger than the last one — and he was still broke enough to feel it.

He closed his eyes.

He had been through a lot.

The capital didn’t care.
