The wall finished rising with a sound like a vault shutting.

Kai stood alone in a strip of packed dirt and broken posts, cracked forfeit band cold on his wrist, and for a second the only thing he could hear was his own breathing.

Then the rest of it came back.

Distant screams. Brand-flashes somewhere beyond the plates. The low grind of more zone walls locking into place. Veylan’s rules still sitting in his head like a threat he had not finished reading.

No Lira.

No Sera.

Just him.

Okay. Okay, don’t panic. Panicking is how you snap the band by accident and wake up outside like a coward who paid for the ticket and refunded himself. Breathe. Look. Count.

He turned in a slow circle.

His zone was a long corridor of trial ground — barriers, a dry trench, three white posts already dead from the first trial, and one live marker farther down that still held a faint brand-glow. One entrance behind him sealed by stone. One exit ahead that probably wasn’t an exit. Footprints in the dust. Fresh.

Desire Sense picked up weight inside the corridor with him.

Not one pair of footsteps.

Two. Maybe three. Close enough that the wall’s echo made them feel nearer than they were.

Kai’s stomach dropped so hard he almost laughed.

Of course. Of course the second the group rule dies I get roommates. Friendly ones, I’m sure. Just here to talk about merit and the weather.

He put his back near a post and forced his hands steady. The cracked band caught the light. One good hit and it might go. One good hit and he was a flare and a failure and Lira would see a blank space where his name was supposed to be.

That thought was worse than the footsteps.

She’s alone too. Somewhere on the other side of that plate. Sera as well. And I can’t go to them. I try to coordinate and the board strips us. I try to climb the wall and officials probably turn me into a cautionary tale. So I sit here like a good little candidate and hope nobody talented walks around that corner.

A ranking board flickered to life on the zone’s side pillar.

Individual now.

Names. Scores. Some already grey. Some climbing. Kai found his own tag after a sweaty second — mid-low, held up by the double marker from the bowl. Lira’s name sat two rows under his, still green. Sera’s higher, because of course it was.

He stared at Lira’s line until his eyes stung.

Stay green. Please stay green. I don’t care if I’m scared enough to taste metal. You stay on that board.

Footsteps got clearer.

Kai moved.

Not toward them. Away, along the trench edge, keeping posts between his body and the open lane. Street habit. Coward habit. The kind of habit that kept people breathing in places designed to stop that.

A candidate came around the far barrier — lean, quick, forfeit band bright and uncracked. Behind him, two more. Not a formal trio. The dissolve had just happened; this was opportunistic. Strangers who had looked at the same corridor and done the same ugly math.

The lean one spotted Kai and smiled like he had found coin on the road.

"Unaligned," he called. "Cracked band. Easy."

One of the others lifted a short spear.

"Share him. Points split cleaner if he snaps."

Kai’s mouth went dry.

*Share him. I’m a group project now. Great. Love this empire. Love this academy. Love Rena for the thoughtful recommendation.*

He did not answer. Talking gave people range.

The lean one came in first, blade low, footwork too neat for pure street and too sloppy for Tovin. A half-learned style. Dangerous enough if you froze.

Kai almost froze anyway.

Fear sat heavy in his chest, honest and loud. He wanted the wall to open. He wanted Lira’s shoulder at his right. He wanted the System to do something without asking him to pay in the middle of a killing lane.

The System stayed quiet.

Of course it did.

Not yet. Not unless I feed it. And if I try to get weird in front of three guys with sharp objects I will die of embarrassment before I die of stab wounds.

The lean one’s blade came for the cracked band — same trick as the bowl. Force the forfeit. Delete the name.

Kai jerked his wrist back and took the cut on the meat of his forearm instead. Pain flared white. He stepped in close where the spear could not help, hit the lean one in the throat with the heel of his hand, and felt the man choke. Rank C made the contact heavier than it looked. The second candidate lunged. Kai used the choking one as a shield and felt the spear tip skip off a shoulder instead of opening his neck.

Still alive. Still ugly. Still not clever. Keep being not clever if not clever works.

He threw the choking man into the spear user and ran for the trench.

Not heroic. Not ranked. Just movement.

One of them swore. Boots followed. Desire Sense painted their weight behind him, too close, too eager.

Kai dropped into the trench, slipped, caught himself, and came up on the other side with dust in his teeth. The third candidate — quieter than the other two — had circled wide and was already there.

Short blade. Patient eyes.

Scar-man patient.

Not the scar man. Same family of problem.

Kai’s fear spiked so hard his vision narrowed.

I am going to die in a ditch outside Nightfall because I wanted my women to get recommendation letters. That is the actual sentence of my life.

The quiet one attacked without a speech.

Kai met it badly. Steel scraped steel. His cracked band sang when the short blade kissed its rim again. He felt the metal threaten to give and something in his head went sharp and cold.

He did not snap.

He headbutted the quiet one, tasted blood that was not his, and drove his knife up under the ribs at an angle that had nothing to do with manuals and everything to do with not wanting Lira’s name to sit alone on a board.

The quiet one gasped.

His hand found his forfeit band and crushed it.

Light took him.

Gone. Alive.

The other two scrambled the trench edge, saw the flare, and hesitated. Hesitation was a gift. Kai did not waste it. He put the open lane behind him and moved for the live marker at the corridor’s end, shoulder burning, forearm wet, band still cracked and still closed.

The ranking pillar flickered as he ran.

Lira’s name held.

Sera’s climbed.

His own ticked up a notch from the removal.

Behind him, the remaining two decided he was not easy enough and peeled off toward different prey. Or toward each other. The Crucible did not explain.

Kai reached the live marker and slapped his palm to it hard enough to sting.

Flash.

Credit.

He put his back to the post and slid down until he was sitting in the dust, breath shredding, hands shaking in a way he could not stop.

Still here. Still on the board. They’re still on the board. The wall is still up. I can’t reach them. I can’t help them. If someone ranked walks into this corridor I am going to have to pay the System in the dumbest way possible or die properly.

He looked at the cracked band.

Then at the pillar where Lira’s name sat green among a field of strangers.

Stay alive. Both of you. I’ll be a coward for as long as it keeps working. Just stay alive.

From the sealed end of the zone, new footsteps entered — heavier than the three, cleaner, one set only.

Desire Sense went tight.

Kai closed his eyes for half a second, opened them, and forced himself upright on legs that did not feel like his.

The individual trial was not going to let him sit.

And whatever had just stepped into his corridor had not come to share points.
