The ranking pillar updated every few minutes like it enjoyed watching people flinch.
Kai had moved off the live marker and into the shadow of a dead post, second blade across his knees, cracked band hidden under a strip of cloth so it would not shine. His hands had mostly stopped shaking. Mostly.
He watched the board because looking away made it worse.
Lira’s name held green. Lower than before the flicker. Still there.
Sera’s climbed in small, mean jumps.
His own sat in the middle like a man who kept surviving by accident.
Middle is fine. Middle is alive. I will take middle over heroic and dead every day of the week.
Footsteps passed his corridor twice and did not stop. Once a fight broke out near the sealed end and ended in a forfeit flare. Once someone crawled past the trench with a snapped band already in hand, too hurt to keep going, light taking them before they finished crying.
Kai stayed put and counted breaths.
---
Lira’s sector was narrower than his.
She learned that the hard way when the first candidate tried to pin her against a plate wall and take the band off her wrist like it was a bracelet. She broke his fingers on the stone and made him snap it himself. No speech. No clean style. Just the same stubborn refusal that had kept her alive in worse streets than this.
Blood ran down her bicep from the earlier cut. She ignored it.
When the ranking light stuttered across her zone pillar, she saw her name dip and felt something cold land in her stomach. Not panic. Anger at the dip. Anger at the wall. Anger at Kai for being on the other side of it where she could not reach him if he did something stupid.
A girl with a spear tip already red tried to share the sector with her.
Lira looked at her once.
"Don’t."
The spear girl — different one, not the cropped-hair professional — hesitated, then found a different lane.
Lira moved on, knife low, eyes on the next live mark, jaw locked so tight it hurt.
---
Sera did not watch names the way the other two did.
She watched patterns.
Who moved in pairs even after the dissolve. Who hesitated at ranked pressure. Who looked at forfeit bands before they looked at faces. She took points where the board paid and did not stay to finish people who were already reaching for the snap.
Cold. Efficient. One cut along her side still wet under the wrap she had made from a stranger’s sleeve.
A clan retainer tried her anyway — black-and-silver, young master nowhere in sight. Clean footwork. Talkative.
"You’re one of the dirt three," he said. "People are asking."
Sera put him down without answering and made him forfeit.
Only after the light took him did she let herself look at the pillar.
Kai’s name still there.
Lira’s still there.
Her own higher.
She wiped her blade and kept moving.
Asking about the dirt three means someone has a list. Lists mean contracts. Contracts mean the next people through this zone won’t be random.
---
On a high ridge between sectors, the clan bastard in black-and-silver stood with one retainer left and a score that made the board respect him.
He watched the names of the unaligned with mild interest.
"Lower district trio," he said. "The boy with the cracked band. The stubborn knife. The quiet one who doesn’t waste steel."
His retainer nodded.
"There’s coin on the boy’s band specifically. Not a formal bounty. Just word. Bring it, prove it, and a few Iron-track candidates will trade marks."
The clan bastard smiled.
"Then someone should collect him before the quiet one does it first."
---
The cropped-hair spear girl tagged a double mark alone, breathing steady, her original two already gone to forfeits she had not ordered. She did not look sad. She looked adjusted.
When a runner whispered past her about a dirt-born three being hunted as a set, she only adjusted her grip on the spear.
"Not my problem," she said.
Then, after a second:
"Unless they cross my line."
---
Kai learned about the list from a dying man.
Not poetic. Not dramatic. Just a candidate slumped against a post with a hole in his gut too sure for a forfeit to fix in time. The man had crawled into Kai’s corridor by mistake. His band was still intact. His eyes were not hopeful.
Kai crouched out of range of the hands.
"Snap it," he said. "You’re done."
The man laughed blood.
"You... the orphan? Lower district?"
Kai’s skin crawled.
"What."
"They’re... talking. Dirt three. Boy’s band worth marks. Trade. Iron-track kids... want proof." The man’s fingers twitched toward his own band and failed. "Should’ve... stayed home."
He snapped it on the third try.
Light took him.
Kai stayed crouched in the dust for a long time after the flare faded.
Dirt three. My band. Trade goods. So the ranked kids don’t even need to hate me. I’m just a voucher. Walk in, force the crack, walk out with proof, buy a better score. Efficient. Horrible. Efficient.
He looked at the cloth over his wrist.
Then at the pillar.
Lira green.
Sera high.
Him middle, and now radioactive.
Of course. The one time I want to be invisible, I become a limited-time offer.
Desire Sense picked up new weight at the sealed end of the corridor — more than one, moving with purpose, not the messy hunger of the first pack. Coordinated enough to make his mouth go dry. Not a formal group. A hunting party that had heard the same word the dying man had.
Kai stood up on stiff legs, second blade in hand, and backed toward the deeper choke of the zone where posts made lines and lines made chances for a coward to stay breathing.
Smart people would snap and leave. Smart people would not have dragged two women into a meat grinder for recommendation letters. Smart people are not me.
He swallowed.
Lira. Sera. You better be reading the board the way I’m reading it. Someone out there is collecting dirt. And they just wrote my name on the order.
From the sealed end, a voice carried — young, pleased, Iron-track casual.
"Cracked band’s in this sector. Spread out. He runs, he hits a wall. He fights, we share the proof."
Kai closed his eyes for half a second.
Opened them.
And ran the only direction left that was not straight into their mouths.
