Davian Kreil did not start with a bow.
He started with his mouth.
The high court was quiet enough that his voice carried clean to the upper rim. Practice blade on his shoulder. Chin up. Performing for anyone with a crest pin and a pair of eyes.
"Aminah Theodore," he said. "There she is. All that empty space around one girl and everyone still acts careful."
A few juniors shifted on the benches.
Davian pointed at her with the blade tip, smiling too wide.
"Second-rank stories. Military house. People talk like your name alone is a sparring ban." His lip curled. "Funny, since Commander Razkar’s last campaign got dragged in every capital hall for months. Losses. Delays. Whole thing turned into gossip. Maybe Theodore steel isn’t as clean as Theodore silence."
The stands tightened.
Ada Lex’s blue eyes lit with vicious interest.
Aminah stood on the sand and waited.
No channel flare. No show form. Olive skin under the mountain light. Black wolf-cut hair neat against her cheek. Dark eyes fixed on him, cold and flat, the kind of cold that did not need anger to hurt. Her frame was athletic and curved under plain senior black, nothing ornamental, nothing soft in the way she held still. Ruthless without raising her voice.
Davian took the silence as permission.
"One exchange. Public. Put the rumor on the floor. Or do you only sit up there and let people be scared of your father’s title?"
Aminah’s answer came quiet.
"Are you done?"
Davian flushed.
He moved.
Fast for intake. Tutor-trained. A high cut with noise in it, meant to land loud and look good. His feet were polished. His confidence was real. For a heartbeat it looked like an opening exchange.
Aminah stepped in.
One motion.
No wasted chamber. She closed the line, took his balance, and put him into the sand hard enough that the sound went through the court like a dropped crate. The practice blade skittered away. Davian tried to rise, folded, and stayed down, battered and staring at nothing, the showy posture gone out of him in a single ugly lesson.
Silence held.
Aminah did not check the stands. She did not offer a hand. She turned and left him for the stewards, steps even, as if the court had only briefly interrupted her sitting.
Bram’s whisper barely reached Kai.
"That’s Aminah Theodore. Only daughter of Commander Razkar Theodore, head of the clan. Military nobility. A senior told me she finished second on the whole first-year board last year. Second. In this place. Seniors don’t call spar on her for fun."
Kai’s mouth had gone dry.
Even from the tier she was worse than rumor. Lethal face. Controlled body. Eyes that had not needed a speech to end Davian Kreil. One year above them and already a different kind of problem.
Do not cross her. Do not get noticed by her. Do not become a story near her. I already have houses on my neck and iron doors south of campus. I do not need her adding me to the floor.
The System flickered.
No fight prompt. No claim order. Just a clean panel.
[Host Status]
Physique / Combat: Rank C (unstable edge)
Desire Points: 1400
Spend Lock: Active until 2000
Kai blinked.
Why. Why now. She didn’t touch me. I didn’t touch her. Why show me the bank like this is a transaction.
He forced the panel away. His hands were not fully steady.
Lira watched the sand with her jaw locked. There was no soft admiration in it. Only hard respect, the kind she gave to people who finished danger without wasting motion. Her fingers had curled against her knee and stayed there.
Sera’s gaze was colder and clearer. She tracked Aminah from the sand back toward the bench like she was ranking a threat, filing her above the crest juniors on the rail, above Ceren’s polish, above most of the names Ash Court whispered about at night.
Ada Lex was already grinning. When Aminah sat, Ada clung to her arm at once, silver hair against Theodore black, porcelain face bright with open glee.
"You should’ve let him finish," Ada whispered, delighted. "I was collecting lines."
Aminah sighed.
"You’re heavy."
"I’m celebrating."
Around the court the nobles split into different kinds of quiet. Mirea Valenne looked openly impressed, eyes shining despite herself. Soren Valenne’s jaw clenched white, the easy smile he wore for lower seats gone. Lysa Sarthin watched like a loud problem had been removed from her week and logged. A lesser pin from a minor house stared from Davian’s folded body to Aminah’s seated stillness as if a rule had changed in public and no one had received the notice in writing.
No one from the dirt three spoke to her.
She did not look at them.
Stewards reached Davian and got him off the sand. Deneil forced the block back toward normal with a clipped order, but the court’s attention never fully returned to the remaining pairs. The sand had already changed ownership in everyone’s head.
---
Classes after that felt thin.
Channel Basics. Brass lines. Corves speaking about structure while Kai’s mana still refused him. Aminah’s single step kept cutting across his focus anyway, clean and final, an unwanted demonstration of what real control looked like.
Dinner was noise and stew. Evening count cleared. Ash Court’s lamps lowered one corridor at a time.
Cell nine was the same small stone box it had always been. Two narrow beds with thin mattresses. Two battered chests. A slit window that showed only dark air and a single far terrace light.
The walls held the cold of the mountain and the faint smell of old oil lamps. Bram’s blanket was still half-kicked from the morning. Kai’s pack leaned where he always left it, like order could make the room less temporary.
Kai dropped onto his mattress, arms crossed behind his head, and stared at the scratches in the ceiling rock.
Bram sprawled on the other bed.
"Kreil’s going to be a hallway story by tomorrow."
"Yeah."
Kai’s mind went back to the panel.
Before the exchange the number had sat where it always sat in the back of his awareness. 1380. Locked. Unused.
After.
He pulled the System once, carefully.
[Desire Points: 1400]
Kai’s breath left him soft.
"It increased," he muttered.
