Liam woke slowly.

For a few seconds he had no idea where he was. His mind was still somewhere between sleep and consciousness, drifting through the strange darkness that always came before his thoughts finally became clear. The first thing he noticed was the coldness of the cave beneath him, followed by the faint glow of crystals scattered across the walls. Their pale light painted the cavern in soft shades of blue and silver, making the place feel strangely peaceful despite everything that had happened there.

Then he noticed Tatiana.

She was sitting beside him, already awake.

From the way she looked, Liam immediately realized she had probably been awake for quite some time. Her long red hair had been brushed back from her face, and she was calmly trimming one of her nails as though they weren’t currently inside the lair of a dead witch surrounded by the remnants of a treasure hoard and several unconscious memories of the previous day’s chaos.

The moment she noticed his eyes opening, however, she stopped what she was doing.

A small smile appeared on her lips.

"Good morning, love."

Liam’s sleepy expression softened immediately.

"Morning."

His voice was still rough from sleep. He rubbed his face with one hand before slowly pushing himself upright. His muscles felt considerably better than they had the previous night, and for a moment he simply sat there, trying to remember what time it was and how long he had slept.

Then he looked over the edge of the elevated resting place.

His eyes widened.

Everybody was already awake.

Not only were Mary, Agatha, Irina and Leonid standing around preparing their belongings, but even Gregor was there. The man looked tired and slightly pale, but he was standing on his own and speaking quietly with Leonid as though being kidnapped by an evil witch was merely an inconvenient interruption to his journey.

Liam slowly turned his head toward Tatiana.

His expression was one of genuine disbelief.

"Everyone is waiting for me..."

He pointed down toward the group.

"And you couldn’t wake me?"

Tatiana didn’t answer.

Instead, she leaned forward and kissed him gently on the lips.

Liam blinked.

She pulled back with a perfectly innocent expression.

"You’re awake now. We can start going."

Liam stared at her for several seconds.

"Unbelievable."

Tatiana simply smiled.

She seemed completely satisfied with herself.

Liam climbed down from the vines, landing lightly on the ground while Tatiana followed immediately afterward. Their horses had already been brought outside the cavern and were standing near the entrance, quietly shifting their weight as the morning air moved through their manes.

The sight of them brought Liam’s attention back to their preparations.

He walked toward Mary, who was checking the bags.

"Did you pack the weapons and coins?"

Mary shook her head.

"No. We can’t carry everything we found. There are too many things here, and we still have a long journey ahead of us. We can only take a few useful items."

Liam nodded slowly.

That made sense.

They had discovered an absurd amount of treasure hidden inside the witch’s lair. Coins, weapons, armor and countless other objects had probably been collected over many years. Even with their horses, trying to carry everything would slow them down considerably.

He was about to respond when something suddenly echoed inside his mind.

Ding!

Liam froze.

The sound was familiar.

The system.

His eyes shifted slightly as a faint translucent interface appeared before him.

There was only one word displayed.

[Inventory]

Liam stared.

He blinked once.

Then twice.

Then a third time.

The word remained.

"Inventory..."

He whispered it without realizing.

The others immediately noticed his strange behavior.

Mary stopped what she was doing.

Leonid looked over.

Irina tilted her head.

Agatha frowned slightly.

Liam simply stood there staring at something nobody else could see. His eyes moved slightly from one side to another as if he were reading information floating in the air.

Tatiana was the first to approach him.

"Love?"

Liam didn’t answer.

She gently touched his arm.

"Liam?"

He finally snapped out of his thoughts and looked at her.

"Are you okay?"

He stared at her for another moment before a slow smile appeared across his face.

"Follow me."

Tatiana’s eyebrows rose.

"Huh?"

He was already turning around.

"Just follow me."

She glanced toward the others, who were equally confused, before following him anyway.

Liam walked deeper into the cavern.

He didn’t say another word until they reached the hidden compartment they had discovered the previous day. The massive collection of coins, weapons, armor and other treasures still remained exactly where they had found them.

Tatiana looked around.

"What are we doing here?"

Liam didn’t answer immediately.

He walked farther inside, looking at the piles of objects scattered throughout the chamber. His eyes moved across the gold coins, silver pieces, bronze coins and weapons of various designs. Some were clearly made for humans while others looked like they belonged to cultures neither of them had ever encountered.

Then Liam turned around.

He looked directly at Tatiana.

"What I’m about to show and tell you here must not leave this room."

Tatiana stared at him.

Absolute confusion filled her face.

She slowly lowered her hand.

"What?"

Liam took a few steps toward her.

His expression had changed.

The playful sleepiness from moments earlier was gone. There was something serious in his eyes now, something that made Tatiana instinctively straighten her posture.

She knew Liam well enough to recognize that expression.

He had discovered something.

Something important.

And judging by the fact that he had deliberately separated her from everyone else before telling her, it was probably something he didn’t want the others to know yet.

Tatiana studied his face carefully.

"What are you hiding from them?"

Liam looked toward the piles of treasure.

Then back at her.

"I just discovered something."

"What?"

"I have an inventory."

Tatiana stared at him.

Silence filled the chamber.

"...An inventory?"

Liam nodded.

"Apparently."

She looked around the room as if expecting to find some hidden chest or magical storage device.

"Like a bag?"

"No."

Liam shook his head.

"Something much better."

Tatiana’s confusion only deepened.

Liam raised his hand slightly.

The translucent interface appeared before him again.

Neither of them could physically touch it, yet the words hovered clearly in his vision.

[Inventory]

He looked at it with an expression that was somewhere between amusement and disbelief.

After everything the system had given him, after all the strange abilities and powers, he couldn’t believe he had somehow overlooked something as basic as an inventory.

It was almost ridiculous.

For the first time since the system appeared, Liam wondered how many other functions were hidden behind menus he had never bothered checking.

Tatiana watched his expression carefully.

"You really have no idea what else it can do, do you?"

Liam slowly looked at her.

"No."

A small grin appeared.

"But I’m about to find out."

Tatiana folded her arms.

"And you brought me here because..."

"Because if this works the way I think it does, we might be able to solve one of our biggest problems."

He gestured toward the treasure.

"We don’t have to choose anymore."

Tatiana’s eyes widened slightly.

She finally began to understand.

Liam’s smile grew.

"We might be able to take everything."

Tatiana stared at the mountain of treasure behind him.

Then she looked back at Liam.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Finally, the corner of her lips slowly lifted.

"Oh."

Liam chuckled.

"Yeah."

The two stood there in the dim hidden chamber, surrounded by the spoils of the witch’s victims while the rest of the group waited outside, completely unaware of what Liam had just discovered.

For now, the secret belonged only to them.

And Liam had a feeling that this newly discovered function was going to change the way they traveled through this world forever.
