Lustful Demon King: Summoned by the Demon Goddesses!
Chapter 322: Her Task! The endless ocean all around Jax rippled once, like a singular stone dropped into the water, and then suddenly, the echo of complete silence just returned.
It wasn't a kind of uncomfortable silence, nor was the silence due to a huge amount of tension. Instead, it was more of a silence caused by deep stillness.
The kind of stillness that only existed in places older than civilization itself.
Jax stood upon the perfectly calm surface of an infinite sea, golden eyes quietly observing the beautiful woman before him.
Everything about this woman felt extremely ancient. Not in the way ruins were ancient. Not in an old or worn way.
Instead, the woman felt timeless, as if she had existed for all of eternity, and will exist for the rest of eternity
The aura this Goddess gave off was like the ocean itself had simply decided to take shape.
Her long blue hair drifted softly around her as though suspended beneath unseen tides. The fabric around her body moved like flowing currents and moonlight woven together.
The most striking aspect of Meridia was by far, her eyes. Those magnificent eyes were deep, impossibly blue, having a depth that very few things in the world had.
Jax had seen multiple oceans already, both in the past back on Earth, and currently after being summoned to Terra.
Throughout his life, Jax had seen endless trenches, ancient currents, and he had also seen the crushing darkness beneath the world, that could sweep anyone up into an eternal abyss.
Yet somehow, looking into her eyes felt deeper than all of that combined. As though entire eternities drifted quietly beneath their surface. The sea around them shimmered softly.
Then finally, Meridia gave a small and almost curious smile, "You are quieter than I expected you to be when I saw your arrive here,"
Jax raised an eyebrow when he heard her say that, "You expected something else?"
"A great many things I expected actually," Her voice moved strangely through the air. It was soft and distant, yet perfectly clear to Jax's ears.
"You're the Demon King, the Otherworlder, the man who was chosen by the Three Troublesome Demon Goddesses," She said and then there was the faintest pause.
"From what I've heard, they've especially become rather attached. Sona wouldn't give out the location of my temple to just anyone after all," The Sea Goddes said.
Jax almost chuckled as he heard that, "Sounds about right."
Something that almost resembled amusement touched Meridia's expression. Then, she stepped closer, but there was no splashing or movement in the water, the ocean simply accepted her presence.
"Welcome, Jax," Her voice softened faintly, "To my domain."
The horizon stretched infinitely around them. Stars reflected endlessly across the water beneath their feet. Above them, auroras shifted lazily through impossible skies.
"It has been quite some time since a mortal stepped here willingly."
Jax glanced around, "…Nice place."
Meridia tilted her head slightly, "You say that casually."
"Should I be more dramatic?" Jax asked.
"As expected of the one they chose, you're quite brave," Meridia said with a smile on her face.
The atmosphere settled again after she said that. Jax didn't feel any sort of oppressive atmosphere from her. All Meridia felt was vast, like the ocean, impossible to fully grasp.
Probably beyond anything he had encountered so far.
Her gaze remained on him, "You probably know from how I've talked so far, but yes, I know who you are."
That much had already been obvious. Still, Jax crossed his arms loosely, "Apparently everyone does, I'm getting quite famous in this world,"
Meridia ignored the joke, "I have been watching."
That got Jax's attention, "Watching?"
Her eyes drifted briefly toward the horizon, "Yes, since your arrival."
Silence lingered for a second. Then, she continued, "I already knew someone would be summoned to stop the Heroes after what Kayle did, so when the Three Goddesses summoned you and the Divine Covenant trembled, I saw fate shift, and I kept my eyes on you,"
Her gaze returned to him, "When a man not born of this world began changing fate, that is something to keep an eye on, wouldn't you think?"
Jax blinked once, "…That sounds way more dramatic than it feels."
"It is dramatic," She answered immediately, "You underestimate the scale of your existence and power, the effect of your presence is more far reaching than you realize, not just through the mortal realm, but even here, in the Divine Realm,"
The ocean around them stirred gently. Her voice remained calm as she spoke to Jax. There was the faintest pause as her expression slightly shifted.
"…Interesting."
Silence settled briefly again. Then, "You seek the Merfolk Kingdom."
The Goddess went straight to the point.
Jax nodded in response, "Yeah."
Immediately, her gaze softened, "You seek to help the child, Seraphina."
The way she said the name carried familiarity. Like she knew her personally and Jax noticed immediately, "You know her?"
"I know all children born beneath my waters. That's the least I could do as a goddess," Meridia said with a smile.
That answer came naturally, as though it was obvious, "The Princess."
Her eyes grew quieter, "She has suffered a lot in her life, time has flown by too quickly,"
Jax's expression flattened slightly, "Yeah."
The ocean darkened faintly around them, probably in response to the emotional shift in the Goddess that was happening currently.
It was as if distant storms were forming on the horizon.
"The Church has crossed lines long forbidden," Her voice remained calm, yet something colder moved beneath it now.
"I've seen their movements. They trespass often, they take without giving, they experiment on people and forget," Meridia said, and the sea beneath them rippled.
"They are fortunate I rarely intervene, or more like can't intervene, due to the Divine Covenant," That sentence carried enough weight to make even Jax pause.
Jax believed her completely. He knew with her power, if she forcefully intervened, entire nations could probably disappear beneath oceans.
Yet she simply stood there, calm and controlled in her emotions no doubt through thousands of years
Eventually, the atmosphere softened again as Meridia looked at him quietly, "You wish access to what my waters conceal, the Merfolk Kingdom."
Jax nodded, "Yeah."
"I can guide you." Meridia said.
His eyebrow lifted slightly, "That easy?"
"…No, of course not," She said with a chuckle, moving past him slightly, her bare feet crossing the ocean surface effortlessly. The stars reflected around her like drifting constellations.
"I know what you want, to reunite Seraphina with her family, to reassure a frightened kingdom and to understand deeper why they were targeted."
Her voice softened faintly, "And perhaps…"
The faintest knowing look crossed her face, "…because you care more than you admit."
Jax looked away slightly, "…Kid's been through enough."
"Yes," Meridia said quietly, "She has."
Silence lingered between them before she turned back toward him fully.
"I will grant you access," Her blue eyes met his, "But first…"
The ocean around them shifted, "You must promise me something."
Jax narrowed his eyes slightly.
"…Depends what it is."
Meridia didn't answer immediately. Instead, she just looked at him as if contemplating something before finally speaking,"You are changing this world unpredictably."
Her voice remained calm, "And many things hidden beneath the surface are beginning to awaken."
Jax listened quietly.
"The balance of sea and land has remained fragile for eras."
Her gaze sharpened slightly, "If war comes, and I believe it will…"
The ocean stirred softly, "I want your word."
Her eyes locked onto his, "That you will not bring ruin to the oceans."
That surprised him.
"…That's it?"
Meridia blinked slowly.
"You say that as though it is small,"
"I mean," He gestured vaguely, "I wasn't planning ocean genocide."
For the first time, actual amusement crossed her face, "You say unusual things."
"The seas sustain this world, more than you realize, everything is birthed and will return to the sea."
"Merfolk, Leviathans, Ancient races, Forgotten civilizations, There are things sleeping beneath my waters older than kingdoms."
Her gaze deepened, "If war spreads, I need certainty, that you will remember restraint."
Jax grew quieter, then nodded once, "…Fair."
His expression sharpened slightly.
"I don't hurt people who aren't my enemies. Never planned to torch the ocean."
A pause, "…Hard to torch water anyway."
That joke actually made her laugh again, "No wonder Sona trusts you so much,"
Meridia nodded once, "One more thing."
Jax sighed immediately, "Of course there is."
"You must do something for me."
His eyes narrowed slightly, "And here's the catch."
"It is not difficult."
That somehow made him trust it less. Meridia turned slightly. The endless sea around them shifted. A distant image forming atop the water.
Dark currents. Ancient ruins. Something vast moving beneath black tides.
Her voice grew quieter.
"There is something beneath my waters that should not be there."
Jax's expression sharpened immediately.
"…Church?"
"No."
The answer came instantly.
"Older."
That got his full attention. The ocean dimmed faintly.
"Something has awakened."
"And I would like you…"
Her gaze settled back onto him.
"…to investigate it for me."
