Arabella Toussaint
I had just woken up when Lilith got a mindlink from someone, "Oh, Goddess," she looked horrified.
"What happened?" I held her hand, forgetting for a moment that I was a patient myself. The nurse who was there to feed me medicines handed me a cup of water.
"You need to take these medicines on time, or you won’t recover. Thank Goddess you didn’t get a fracture."
I swallowed the pills obediently and handed back the cup, but my eyes stayed on Lilith’s face. The nurse pressed my ribs to check my injuries and then noted something on the clipboard.
Once she left, my focus turned to Lilith, whose face was deathly pale.
"He ... he will kill her..." she whispered in a shaky voice as more color seemed to drain from her face.
"What?" I struggled to sit up, "Who will kill who?"
"Lucien... he is attacking Jasmine..." She swallowed hard.
"What?" Without thinking, I pulled the cannula out of my hand, "Take me there."
Lilith seemed to get her senses back, "N...no... don’t be a fool. You need rest," she warned me with wide eyes.
"I’ve already taken enough rest, Lilith. Take me to them," I said as I swung my legs over the side of the bed.
She hesitated.
"Lilith."
Something in my voice must have convinced her because she finally slipped an arm around my waist.
Whatever happened on that ground, no one could blame Jasmine alone. I was equally responsible.
I knew I could never defeat her, and yet I had still accepted her challenge.
When I reached the training grounds with Lilith, I was shaken to the core. The way Lucien’s golden eyes were blazing with fury, he didn’t even look like himself anymore.
The confident head warrior I met last night was gone. This woman wasn’t even fighting back. She was bruised, covered in dirt and blood. Queen Theodora and Princess Aliya stood there, doing nothing but crying with their hands over their mouths.
Pathetic!
They didn’t have enough courage to stop the king from doing something wrong. When they saw me there, the queen made a face while Aliya rolled her eyes.
I paid them no attention and walked straight to him.
"Put her down, Your Highness. Let her go," Once I reached behind him, I whispered in a weak voice. Lucien seemed to freeze when he heard me.
He wasn’t expecting me.
Watching me stand there, the disbelief was evident on his face. I saw his fingers loosening around Jasmine’s throat. She dropped to the ground with a heavy thud, struggling to breathe. But Lucien’s eyes? They never left mine.
I walked towards him, still a little shaky, and knelt beside Jasmine. She was half unconscious, but I was sure her wolf was strong enough to heal her.
In my haste, I forgot to kneel before him.
"Can you ask someone to take her to the hospital?" I asked quietly without looking at the king. I didn’t know how I got enough confidence to make the mighty king stop from doing something.
Wasn’t sure what came over me.
For a long moment, he didn’t answer and then finally said, "She attacked you... and you’re still trying to save her."
"You should’ve talked to me first," I, at last, looked up at him, "This isn’t the time to discuss this, My King. Please send her to the hospital," I then turned to Beta Bradley.
"Bradley?"
Beta’s eyes darted between me and the king, clearly confused by what was happening. After a brief pause, he nodded, "Sure."
With the help of a few warriors, he carefully lifted Jasmine from the ground.
"Look who’s here..." The queen approached me with a mocking smile, "Where are your manners, girl?" she asked me in a sickly-sweet voice, "When you speak to the king, you address him properly."
Aliya, who was standing behind her, made a pout as her gaze ran over me as if trying to tell me through her actions how dirty I was.
Let them bark. I had already planned to leave this place whether Lucien would decide to take back his mark or not.
Ignoring them, I turned around and was taken aback when my feet left the ground. A startled cry escaped my lips as he scooped me up effortlessly and pulled me against his chest.
"How dare you leave your hospital bed?" He growled, and I heard a distinctive, heavy voice. His Lycan’s voice.
Instead of explaining myself, I looked around for Lilith.
"Looking for Lilith?" he asked me without slowing his pace, "She already left. Mother and Aliya don’t like her."
Huh. His mother and Aliya don’t like anyone other than themselves.
"Umm... you can put me down. I can walk..." I told him in a whisper, but he kept walking. I needed to get discharged from the hospital as soon as possible.
Maya must have sent another message through the fruit boxes, and I couldn’t wait to read her next message.
After entering my room, he gently laid me on the bed before leaning over me, "If you dare climb out of this bed again... I’ll have a leash put around your neck," he warned me, pointing a finger at me.
His eyes turned bright golden. I’d never met his Lycan, and I didn’t know why he wanted to come forward today.
Speaking of a leash reminded me of the electric collar that was around my neck. It still gave me shivers.
When he saw me not saying anything, his face moved closer, "And if that doesn’t work, I’ll have you tied to this bed until the healer allows you to walk."
The threat got my attention, "No. You won’t."
He cocked up a brow, fixing the blanket over my body, "Try me, Arabella."
I didn’t miss the challenge in his eyes, and fought the urge to laugh.
Poor man! He was asking me not to leave the hospital bed while I was planning to leave this royal palace and the pathetic people behind me.
