Arabella Toussaint:
AT ANGELA BY SIX IN THE EVENING.
That was what Maya sent me in a cherry carton on that crimson-red sticky note. Of course, the message was written in code, and it took me a while to decode it.
As soon as I got discharged from the hospital, I headed straight for the kitchen as if I wanted to help them. I couldn’t afford to let anyone suspect I was planning something.
I looked over my shoulder, where a guard was following me all the time. The king hired him for my safety after Jasmine’s attack.
My personal bodyguard.
"So where is the slave heading?" I closed my eyes when I heard Aliya’s amused voice, "I can see you’ve become quite comfortable after climbing into my brother’s bed," she mocked, "And now you’re trying to fool the rest of us."
I slowly turned around and found her standing too close to me. However, I didn’t cower in fear. Not today.
"Your Highness," I curtsied before her, "What can I get for you? Drinks? Some snacks? Or is there anything else you need?" I kept a sweet smile pasted on my face.
"Tsk," she chuckled mockingly, "Does my brother know what a drama queen you are? First you riled him up against Jasmine, and when he punished her, you rushed in like some knight in shining armor," she said dramatically, folding her arms across her chest, "Tell me, slave... how many faces do you have?"
I studied her for a moment before tilting my head, "And what did you do, Princess?" I made a small pout, "You call Jasmine family, don’t you? Yet while she was being beaten, all you and your mother could do was stand there... gasping and crying." I gave her an innocent smile, "I didn’t know Lycan women were this fragile."
Her smile vanished.
"Shut up!" She hissed, and her Lycan surged closer to the surface. Her eyes turned yellowish blue as she tried to control her she-lycan back, "Watch your mouth, slave."
With a subtle smile, I turned away and headed to the kitchen.
I needed to place another message for Maya in numeric form. According to her message, she said that she would wait for me at Angela’s at six in the evening. But she didn’t mention any specific day or date.
If she had clarified, then I could plan my escape according to that. Moreover, I might need someone’s help from inside the palace. The problem was I couldn’t trust anyone.
Once I met Maya, we could come up with a solution regarding the King’s mark. I was sure she’d help me.
Goddess. I hope I was not walking straight into another trap.

Helena.
That was the first name that came to my mind. In the start, she had obeyed every royal family’s order and treated me no differently than the others.
But over time, I realized there was a heart of gold beating inside her chest. She was the only one who treated me better than others and showed me kindness. Because of her, other Omegas had gradually stopped bullying me.
If I needed help in escaping this palace, then maybe Helena....
"Helena?" I called out while entering the kitchen, "Can I help with something? As always... I’m getting bored."
A few of the Omegas passed me subtle smiles.
Helena was placing a vegetable carton on the counter. As soon as she saw me, she smiled warmly, "Of course, dear. Rowan is already chopping vegetables. Let me find something for you."
I had already slipped the sticky note in the empty fruit carton. With a nod, I picked up a few dirty dishes and started washing them while humming an old tune under my breath.
After a few minutes, the kitchen became strangely quiet. Even the sound of chopping had stopped.
What was going on?
I looked over my shoulder and froze. I could literally feel a knot forming in my stomach.
King Lucien stood in the doorway, one shoulder resting against the frame. His golden eyes were fixed on me. The moment our eyes met, he pushed himself off the doorframe and started walking towards me.
The plate nearly slipped from my hands, and I had to set it aside quickly to wipe my wet hands on my apron.
"Wh...what are you doing here?" I blurted before I could stop myself.
He cocked up a brow, and his eyes traveled over my body as I took off the apron. As always, I was wearing a summer dress because I still found it more comfy than anything else.
"Do I need permission to visit my own damn kitchen?" He asked me softly as he stopped at an arm’s distance, "Helena just informed me that you’ve been asking for kitchen duties."
What?
My gaze instinctively shifted to Helena, who offered me a small, helpless shrug.
She sent him a mindlink? Shit!
I looked away.
Okay. Fine! Got the message, Moon Goddess. I can’t trust Helena. Thank you for the guidance.
There was no way I could trust her with my escape.

As we walked back towards the quarters, he took my hand and lifted it to his lips, "There is no need for you to go to the kitchen," he placed a soft kiss on my knuckles, "We have servants for that."
Huh? Am I not a servant?
But wait. When I realized what he had said, my heart dropped. No. I needed to go to the kitchen, it was the only way I could stay in touch with Maya.
Suddenly, I stopped walking, forcing him to stop with me.
"Please..." I whispered, "The kitchen... it’s... my favorite... my safe space..."
I trailed off, not knowing what to say. His brows drew together as he studied my face.
"You like the... kitchen?"
I nodded quickly, "Don’t stop me from going there. Please," I pleaded, "If you don’t want me to do chores, then I swear I won’t... spending a few moments there makes me feel at ease..."
Goddess. I was uttering crap.
For a long moment, he simply looked into my eyes, as though trying to understand something. Then he sighed, "Alright. But no chores."
"I swear. No chores," I said quickly before he could change his mind.
