After leaving the chicken farm, Evelyn headed to the pharmaceutical factory.

The factory workers all had to wear protective suits to work. At the entrance, there was a decontamination chamber where workers, clad in their suits, had to undergo five seconds of disinfection before they could enter the production floor.

Evelyn didn’t go into the production workshop. Instead, she took a detour to the warehouse, planning to see what medicines they had in stock.

The warehouse was guarded by armed bodyguards, with more people patrolling outside. The pharmaceutical factory was a critical department; if anything went wrong, the management would be skinned alive, if not outright killed.

Evelyn didn’t plan on stealing any medicine. She just wanted to see what kinds the base was producing so she could prepare some of her own when she got back.

"Bone Healing Pills, red medicine pills, Fracture and Bruise Powder, Sanqi Blood Circulation Pain Relief Ointment, Seven Powder, Trauma Pill..."

"Why is it all for injuries?" Evelyn opened a box and sniffed. The medicinal scent was strong. ’They’re actually all high-quality,’ she thought.

Evelyn took some photos, grabbed a box of each type of medicine, and quietly slipped out of the warehouse. On her way back to the parking lot, she made a special detour to the boiler room to fill a bottle with hot water.

The hot water reeked of bleach. She would have to test both the hot and cold water for contamination.

After all, the base’s water was drawn from the Source River Dam. If the source was contaminated, the island, surrounded by water, would surely be affected.

Back in the garage, she found the pickup truck and quickly hopped into the passenger seat. To her surprise, she was the first one to finish her mission.

’I wonder how Ronan and Ethan are doing. Did they run into trouble?’

Evelyn glanced at the time. ’If they’re not back in an hour, I’ll go look for them.’

Just then, the sound of laughter and roughhousing echoed through the parking lot. A few young men and women walked in and went over to a van on the right. A young man with short hair opened the driver’s side door and got in. Two girls standing nearby were whispering to each other, occasionally glancing at a boy standing behind them.

’If it weren’t for the apocalypse, these kids would all be in high school.’

"Let’s go! Time to have some fun!"

They drove off in the van, their laughter still echoing through the parking lot. Evelyn looked away and set an alarm on her phone, planning to take a short nap.

Evelyn fell asleep quickly, but it was a light sleep. The slightest sound from outside would wake her instantly. When Ronan pulled open the car door, she reflexively drew her gun and aimed it at his chest.

"I thought you were a thief."

Evelyn put the gun away, looking Ronan up and down.

"Is it done?"

"Yes. Let’s head back to the small building and wait for news."

Evelyn was a little surprised. "That fast? You settled it in one go?"

"I met one of my own kind." Ronan didn’t seem to want to hide anything from Evelyn, so he told her everything.

"He was from a batch of test subjects before me. I never expected he’d manage to climb to this position."

Evelyn’s brow furrowed. "Could he have replaced the original Commander?"

Ronan paused for a moment. "I didn’t ask. But according to the files I got from The Black Dragon Gang, Rhys Chase was already the Commander when The Second Base was established."

Ronan sat in the driver’s seat, still toying with the dagger in his hand. Evelyn sensed that something was off with his mood, but since he didn’t bring it up, she didn’t ask. She just leaned over and gently hugged him.

"Ethan will be okay, won’t he?"

Ronan shook his head. "He will. He’s very capable."

"By the way, I have something to tell you. Several hundred pigs at the pig farm have swine fever."

"It must have started a few days ago. Swine fever spreads quickly."

Evelyn took the pig lung she had collected out of her space. "Look, this lung is covered in black spots and bubbles, and there’s a lot of froth on it. The froth has a strong, sour, rotten smell."

"I brought a few pieces of pork out. I’ll run a test on them when we get back to the small building."

"Get some rest when we get back. You can leave this kind of thing to me," Ronan said, tucking the stray hairs under her hat.

"Do I have dark circles under my eyes?"

Ronan leaned in, studying her face carefully. "No. But your face has filled out a bit."

Evelyn quickly pulled out a mirror to check. Her appearance hadn’t changed much over the past few years, but it was just as Ronan said. Her once-youthful face had matured, her features becoming more striking and well-defined, and her gaze had grown more resolute.

"The years are catching up to me."

Ronan watched her with a smile. "Mmm, my Felicity’s all grown up. You’re a young woman now."

Evelyn shot him a glare. "You can call someone a ’young lady’ if they’re under twenty-five. At my age, I’m just a ’woman’."

Ronan reached out and touched Evelyn’s ear. "But you clearly are a young lady."

’No wonder Quincy always complains that he’s a lovesick fool,’ Evelyn thought. ’When he looks at me, I swear he’s seeing me through a filter a mile thick.’

They waited for another half hour, but Ethan still hadn’t returned.

"Something might have happened to him. Ronan, let’s go find him. I’ll check the residential buildings, you go to the crocodile pit. It’s farther away, and you’re faster."

But Ronan disagreed. "You stay here and keep watch. I can go by myself. He probably just got held up by something."

Ronan could track people by their scent, so Evelyn followed his instructions and waited for him in the truck.

After Ronan left, Evelyn took out her pocket watch to check the time. Five hours had already passed. Today’s trip was taking far longer than they had anticipated.

Just as Evelyn was starting to feel anxious, Ronan returned with Ethan.

"You’re hurt?" Evelyn smelled blood on Ethan and pulled some styptic and other special medicine from her bag for him.

"It’s nothing. Just a scratch."

"What happened?"

Ethan answered Evelyn’s question as he treated the wound on his arm.

"I went to that crocodile pit you mentioned. Besides the crocodiles, they were also raising a lot of snakes. I was discovered on my way out and had to fight someone. I’ve already taken care of them. I poured Poison Powder into the crocodile pit and the snake den."

Evelyn hadn’t expected the person behind the crocodile pit to be so obsessed with raising those creatures. ’They just won’t give up,’ she thought. ’We destroyed it once, and after just a few days, they’ve already started a second batch.’

"Did you go to the residential buildings?"

"That was the first place I went. I asked two people and got the same answer from both. Anyone who dies in the base, regardless of the cause, gets a visit from a corpse collection team. They come to the door to take the body away. The base hasn’t told anyone what they do with the bodies, but I did find some bones in the crocodile pit."

"What about you two? Did it go smoothly?"

Evelyn glanced at Ethan. "We got back a long time ago. We waited for you for ages, but you never showed up, so Ronan went out to look for you. As for our missions, mine went smoothly, and Ronan’s is more or less done too."

For once, a look of shame crossed Ethan’s face. "I was the one holding us back."

"It’s not your fault. The base is crowded, with eyes everywhere. Accidents can happen at any time. Who could have predicted it?"

Evelyn held the pocket watch out for them to see. "We’re over our time limit. Let’s get back to the small building first."
