Magic Space: Struggling to Survive in the Apocalypse
Chapter 540: NeighborsEvelyn Ford was silent for several seconds. Meeting Winnie Miller’s expectant gaze, she shook her head.
"I’m sorry, I can’t."
"Why?"
"He’s my man."
Winnie Miller was stunned for a moment, then her face flushed bright red. "I’m sorry."
With that, she turned and quickly ran off.
"Joy Ford, you have a rival! What are you going to do? Is she going to fight you for Mr. Ronan Kendrick?"
Evelyn Ford patted Wendy’s shoulder. "Don’t worry, it’s not that serious."
"But on TV, a lot of girls hurt each other over a man, and men can be fickle. I don’t want you to get hurt, and I don’t want to see you cry."
Evelyn Ford hugged Wendy. "I won’t cry, and I definitely won’t get hurt. That young lady just now didn’t know Ronan Kendrick and I were together, that’s why she was interested in him. That’s perfectly normal. After I told her, she apologized to me."
Wendy sighed. "Men are just a distraction. I’m going to stay single forever."
Evelyn Ford couldn’t help but laugh. Back in the safe zone, Wendy used to want several boyfriends. She hadn’t expected her to have given up on love so soon after growing up a little.
"Come on, let’s go home."
Meanwhile, Ethan Dawson and the other two had just dropped May Warren and her son off at their home when they ran into her brother-in-law, who was returning from the base.
May Warren’s brother-in-law was named Miles Young. He was around forty-five years old, tall, with a cold and stern expression. He didn’t seem like the good-natured type.
When May Warren saw Miles Young, she was like a mouse that had seen a cat. She had been struggling just a moment before but suddenly went quiet. She lowered her head, not daring to look up. Ethan Dawson noticed that May Warren was actually trembling; she was afraid of Miles Young.
They had thought Miles Young would cover for May Warren, but unexpectedly, after asking what had happened, he just gave May Warren a cold glance, took the dazed little girl’s hand, and went straight into the villa.
Ethan Dawson glanced at Miles Vaughn and Peter Owens. The three of them left May Warren and her son in the yard and swaggered back to Sector C.
Evelyn Ford brought Quincy and Officer Graham out of the space. Both men had been busy all day and were exhausted. Quincy collapsed onto the sofa, wearing sunglasses with his legs crossed, not only enjoying Zoe’s leg massage but also ordering Wyatt Vaughn to fetch him tea and water.
"Zoe told me a madwoman stopped by. Where is she?"
Evelyn Ford picked up her teacup and took a sip. "Chased her off."
"I can’t believe I missed such a great scene. What a shame." Quincy showed Evelyn Ford the palm of his injured hand.
"I got injured. Does this count as a workplace injury?"
"The wound is so small, you can’t even see it without a magnifying glass."
Quincy held his hand out, moving it closer. "It’s still bleeding. How can you not see it?"
"Alright then, how about a month off? You can rest up and take good care of yourself."
"Oh, that won’t be necessary." Quincy coughed. "As long as I eat something good, it should stop bleeding pretty quickly."
Zoe slapped Quincy on the back. "Dad, you’re injured! How can you still be so greedy? You’re supposed to watch what you eat when you’re hurt, and all you can think about is food. You need to wise up."
After being scolded by Zoe, Quincy didn’t dare talk nonsense anymore.
Evelyn Ford gloated from the side, "Wise up."
Zoe took off Quincy’s sunglasses and clumsily tried to put them on, pulling them down over her head. She barely managed to get them to rest on the bridge of her nose. With the sunglasses on, she began to pretend she was blind, reaching her hands out to find Quincy and Evelyn Ford.
"Dad, where are you? I can’t see you! Auntie, where are you? My eyes can’t see, WAH WAH WAH..."
Watching Zoe goofing around, everyone burst out laughing.
Just then, Ethan Dawson and the others returned.
"Did you take them home? Where does her family live?"
"Building 13 in Sector B. We’d just reached their front door when the woman’s older brother returned. Her husband’s older brother, to be exact. When he got back, a neighbor—an older woman—shared some information with us about that family."
Evelyn Ford nodded. "The next-door neighbor also gave me some information just now. You tell me what you know first."
"The older woman said that May Warren does this sort of thing all the time, going to her neighbors’ houses to eat, drink, and take whatever she wants. Even though they live in a villa, her husband has a cushy job that doesn’t pay well. Her brother-in-law, on the other hand, is quite influential, and the villa is his. He lets them live in two of the rooms, but he’s made it clear he won’t provide them with any food. With a family of four, their food and drink expenses are high, so they have no choice but to mooch off their neighbors. Sometimes, she even sells information about her neighbors in exchange for food. She was caught once, and if it weren’t out of respect for her brother-in-law, the other party would have taught her a lesson long ago. And because of that, she’s only gotten more and more outrageous."
Everyone was stunned. How could someone like that not have been beaten to death yet, still brazenly running from house to house?
"Her brother-in-law works at the base’s pharmaceutical factory." Something seemed to click. Evelyn Ford looked at Ethan Dawson. "I thought you said her brother-in-law has a son, and that May Warren is looking after him?"
Ethan Dawson shook his head. "Her brother-in-law does have a child, but he’s hired a nanny and a bodyguard to look after him. The older woman said that May Warren often abuses her own daughter. How could a person like that possibly take care of someone else’s child?"
Evelyn Ford nodded. "It seems your information is more accurate. One more thing, do you think May Warren’s son and her brother-in-law look alike?"
"Not at all. The older woman said the neighbors all think that little brat is the brother-in-law’s illegitimate son. But I took a good look. The brat has monolids, a flat nose, a protruding mouth, and no earlobes. That man is handsome and imposing; they don’t look alike in the slightest. They can’t possibly be father and son."
Hearing him say that, Evelyn Ford couldn’t help but laugh.
"Our family made a name for ourselves on our first day here. When we went out just now, people from every house were peeking at us, and some were even cheering. If food wasn’t so precious, I bet people would have thrown vegetable leaves at that shrew and her brat."
"But her daughter is so pitiful."
Ethan Dawson looked at Wendy. "Her daughter? That dazed, vacant-looking kid? I saw the brother-in-law being quite nice to her. He even pulled her into the house."
"Her parents must favor their son over their daughter. Her little brother is fat and round like a pig, and he was even wearing a padded jacket. But she’s all skin and bones, and her clothes are dirty and torn. She definitely doesn’t get enough to eat or warm clothes to wear. And that shrew hits and scolds her." Wendy shook her fist. "Next time I see that shrew, I’m going to get revenge for that little girl."
"Don’t be rash." Officer Graham disapproved of Wendy’s idea.
"Dad, you have no idea how horrible that shrew is."
"However horrible she is, it has nothing to do with us. Wendy, you want to get revenge for that little girl, but is that what she would want? If something happens to her mother, will she still have a place to live?"
"She still has her father and her uncle! They definitely wouldn’t abandon her."
Officer Graham shook his head. "Judging by that woman’s character, you can guess what kind of person her husband is. Besides, no matter how nice her uncle is to her, he’s still just an uncle."
