Magic Space: Struggling to Survive in the Apocalypse
Chapter 545: Looking for Trouble"Is there any work suitable for us?"
Ronan Kendrick glanced at Peter Owens. "It’s still not stable outside. The sun isn’t out, and trouble could stir up at any moment. It’s best to stay home and not go out."
"If you’re getting restless, you can help me grind medicinal powders." Evelyn Ford looked at the three children. "If you go out to work and something unexpected happens, we’ll all have to go out and search for you. Even though the city district has installed a lot of streetlights, it’s still the polar night. Crime is a daily occurrence, whether in the city or the refugee camps."
"This goes especially for you three. Don’t run off to play outside. A lot of bad people like to snatch children. There are no surveillance cameras out there, which makes finding someone very difficult."
Zoe and Annie nodded quickly. Wendy, however, raised an eyebrow, her face alight with excitement. "My combat power is super strong! If anyone dares to act up in front of me, I’ll beat them up."
"In the face of absolute power, your amateurish skills are nothing."
"Dad, you know nothing of my power." As she spoke, Wendy picked up a spoon from the table and, with a gentle twist, bent it.
Everyone was stunned, except for Evelyn Ford and Ronan Kendrick.
"Wendy, you’re a regular strongman!"
Wendy raised her arms, showing everyone her not-so-obvious biceps.
"That’s right. From now on, call me Strongman."
"Wow, Wendy, that’s amazing! You’re all skinny arms and legs, I never thought you’d be a master. Did you train for that, or were you born with it?"
Wendy thought for a moment. "Probably born with it. My dad isn’t even as strong as me. I must have inherited it from my mom."
Evelyn Ford stifled a laugh. She remembered Mrs. Graham being a very gentle woman and couldn’t possibly associate her with a "strongman."
"Looks like we’ll have to rely on Wendy to protect us from now on."
Wendy nodded. "Sure. I’ll protect everyone from now on. Don’t you worry."
Officer Graham didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "Could you be a little more humble?"
"Dad, don’t lecture me while we’re eating. Besides, I’m this amazing, you should be praising me more."
"Fine, you’re the most amazing."
"So half-hearted."
After dinner, everyone was sitting in the living room, watching TV and chatting, when suddenly, there was a commotion at the front door. Someone was banging on the gate.
"I’ll go see." Quincy stood up to open the door, and Miles Vaughn and Peter Owens followed him.
"Who is it? Banging on the gate at this hour... It’s not that shrew from before, is it? I need to find a wooden stick so I can beat someone up." Wendy was aggressively about to look for a handy stick when Officer Graham held her back.
"Don’t be rash."
Evelyn Ford put away the watermelon and dragon fruit from the table. ’This fruit is too eye-catching. Better to hide it now to avoid trouble.’
At the gate, Quincy looked at the several young men standing outside the iron bars and didn’t open it rashly.
"Who are you? What do you want?"
A young man in a blue sweater stepped forward. He was holding a wooden stick, which he used to tap carelessly on the iron gate, his arrogant gaze fixed on Quincy.
"You don’t need to know who we are. We’re here for one reason today: hand over that womanizing punk from your house."
Quincy was utterly confused.
"’Womanizing?’ Are you mistaken? The people in our house barely go out, and we don’t even know you."
"No mistake. It’s your house, C-11."
Quincy glanced at Miles Vaughn, then at Peter Owens.
"It’s not either of them. He’s tall, has very fair skin—a real pretty boy. Get him out here, now. Otherwise, my boys and I are going to level your house today."
’Who else could that description fit but Ronan Kendrick? It can’t possibly be that rugged guy, Ethan Dawson, right?’
"We don’t have anyone like that here. You’re mistaken."
"No mistake. Hurry up and call him out. If you people want to keep living in Kestrel Villa, you’d better know what’s good for you and tell him to get his ass out here."
’This kid is arrogant,’ Quincy thought with a cold snort. "Are you looking for trouble?"
"That’s right, I’m here to cause trouble today. Open the gate. We brought gasoline. If you don’t open up, I’ll pour it and light it." The goons behind him were each holding a bottle of gasoline, and they were also carrying wooden clubs, steel bars, and knives.
Quincy was stunned by the sight.
’Did Ronan Kendrick really get himself into some kind of mess outside?’
Miles Vaughn stepped forward, pulling Quincy behind him. "This is a villa district. If you set a fire, the entire district could be destroyed. Have you thought about the consequences?"
The young men across from them looked to be about eighteen or nineteen. Their clothes were neat, and the leader even wore a watch on his wrist. A pickup truck was parked nearby. They were probably residents of the villa district as well.
"There’s a gap of over a hundred meters between each villa. It won’t burn the one next door." The young man shook the gasoline in his hand. "I hear there are more than ten people in your house. Since you won’t open the gate, I’ll do you a favor and let you all die together."
Quincy tugged on Miles Vaughn’s clothes, signaling him not to provoke these lunatics while he went back for reinforcements.
"Hiding in there like a coward in a shell, huh? Dares to flirt around outside but doesn’t dare to come out? Scared, are you? You should be. I’m here today to break both his legs."
The more the young man spoke, the angrier he got, and he started spewing all sorts of profanities.
Words like "scumbag," "son of a bitch," "homewrecker," and "kept man" all came tumbling out.
Peter Owens and Miles Vaughn exchanged a look, both finding it hard to believe that the "womanizer" they were talking about was Ronan Kendrick.
Inside the living room, Ronan Kendrick’s expression grew darker and darker. His hearing was excellent; the commotion outside was not quiet, and he could hear every word of the conversation clearly.
Recalling what Evelyn Ford had told him before about "romantic interests" coming to their door, he now understood the whole situation.
"This is bad!" Quincy ran into the living room and reached out to grab Ronan Kendrick.
"There are a few young guys outside making trouble! They said you were fooling around outside and they’re here to teach you a lesson. I don’t believe it, but they’re describing it so convincingly. Ronan, what the hell is going on?"
Ronan Kendrick slapped Quincy’s hand away. "Just talk. Don’t get handsy."
"What are you being so picky about? They’re right outside causing a scene! They even said they’re going to pour gasoline and burn our villa down!"
"That brazen?" Ethan Dawson stood up. "I’ll go take a look."
"Hey, they specifically asked for Ronan Kendrick, not a big brute like you."
Evelyn Ford was a little curious. "Do they know Ronan’s name?"
"No, but they said he’s tall, fair-skinned, and a ’pretty boy.’ Isn’t that a perfect description of Ronan? He’s the tallest among us, and his skin is even fairer than yours."
"How could Ronan possibly do something like that? I don’t believe it. There must be a misunderstanding."
"Ronan is so decent. They must be framing him."
"They dare to bully Ronan? Do these little bastards have a death wish?"
"Evelyn is so beautiful. How could Ronan possibly get involved with other ugly ducklings, unless he’s gone blind?"
Evelyn... ’Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedules to praise me.’
Zion Lowell and Taylor Vance couldn’t sit still anymore, looking like they wanted to grab kitchen knives and fight to the death with the people spouting nonsense outside.
Joelle Finch and Wyatt Vaughn grabbed a broom and a rolling pin, ready for a fight.
Even Annie and Zoe clenched their little fists, glaring angrily outside.
