"Have you guys heard? May Warren’s husband kicked her out."
Quincy was the household’s primary source of gossip. All the news they heard usually came from him. Ever since he became Liam Sterling’s assistant, he’d been running around outside more, giving him even more channels to pick up rumors.
Wendy’s eyes lit up. "He really kicked her out? Evelyn was right again! That’s so satisfying."
"Of course it’s true. She has nowhere to go and doesn’t want to live in the shelters, so she set up a shed just outside the villa complex. Every day she stands at the main gate with her hands on her hips, screaming curses. Sometimes she sits on the ground wailing, cursing her husband to die a horrible death for abandoning his loyal wife. Other times she curses her daughter for being an ungrateful brat. You can smell the stench from a mile away. The number of cars using the main gate has dropped these past few days."
"Don’t the security guards drive her away?"
"They try, but no one’s a match for her. She goes to the public toilets in the residential area, scoops up feces, and throws it at people. Who would dare get close to her?"
"No wonder. I was wondering why I kept smelling something foul these past few days. So it’s May Warren throwing dung." Evelyn rubbed her temples. "She’s cutting off her nose to spite her face with that move."
"It’s been so many days, and that little monster still hasn’t come back. He must be really missing," Wendy said with a mischievous grin.
"Alright, other people’s business is none of our concern. I have several baskets of Panax notoginseng here. I’ve put them in the guest room. Everyone remember to grind them into powder."
Miles Vaughn and Peter Owens still had to go work with Liam Sterling. Quincy, however, had two days off. He’d spent the last few days visiting the base and the shelters. Because he used to do pharmaceutical research, Rhys Chase had even thought about recruiting him to work in the Undercity.
But Quincy wasn’t an ambitious person; he knew his own limits. Besides, being Liam Sterling’s assistant was one thing, but working in the Undercity would make him Rhys Chase’s employee. That was equivalent to losing his personal freedom, and he wanted no part of that.
"Besides, I’m just a drug testing technician. I don’t have much experience in pharmaceutical research. Liam Sterling said those people are arrogant and look down their noses at everyone just because they have a bit of skill. I’m not going there to suffer." ’And an amateur like me would probably get sent home in less than half a day.’
"Liam Sterling said working in the Undercity gets you not just grain, fruits, and vegetables, but also clothes and medicine. But look at him, he’s worked to the bone every day. Even in the apocalypse, he can’t escape the fate of a corporate slave."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "You’ve been to the Undercity?"
"Haven’t been. Liam Sterling told me the general layout. He said the Undercity is a lot like a space capsule."
"Oh, right, the pharmaceutical factory has started producing oxygen cylinders recently. A few processing plants are also working overtime to produce various oxygen tanks and oxygen concentrators."
Evelyn nodded. "Ronan Kendrick told me about it."
She had an oxygen concentrator in her space, so she wasn’t too worried about survival. Besides, Rhys Chase had promised them that if a crisis occurred, they could move into the Undercity.
Rhys Chase had been living here for almost a week, and he showed no signs of returning to the base. The base was severely divided, with factions big and small forming cliques. With Rhys Chase’s sudden disappearance from the base, many people were searching for him. During this time, some strangers had also infiltrated Kestrel Villa. Ronan Kendrick said they were all here to assassinate Rhys Chase.
Evelyn hadn’t been out and about in a long time. Ever since moving into the villa, she had become a complete homebody.
The police department was already under construction, and the first batch of officers had been selected. Liam Sterling had chosen one hundred young men between the ages of twenty and thirty-five from the patrol teams. Police stations were being set up in the residential area of Flumen, the shelter area, and the Source River Dam service station.
Quincy said that even before the police department officially opened, a large number of residents had already gone to report crimes. Liam Sterling had someone set up a service kiosk at the entrance, where anyone reporting a crime had to fill out a form first. The cases would be handled one by one after the department opened. In just a few short days, the kiosk had already collected over a thousand crime reports.
"Mr. Chase took a liking to Ethan Dawson and wanted him to work at the police station in the residential area, but Ethan Dawson refused."
Ethan Dawson had to farm the land; where would he find the time to work at a police station? Rhys Chase was quite the schemer. He’d only been at the villa for a few days and was already trying to turn everyone into his employees.
"He’s trying to poach people right from our home. Ronan Kendrick really let the wolf into the house."
As Evelyn and Quincy were whispering, Ronan Kendrick shot Evelyn a resentful look.
"It’s easier to invite a god than to send one away. I wonder when he’ll finally go back to the base."
’Rhys Chase... even though you’re whispering, I can hear you.’
He took another sip of his herbal tea, then silently got up and went back to his guest room.
Back in the bedroom, Evelyn asked Ronan Kendrick when Rhys Chase was going back to the base. Ronan Kendrick was silent for a few seconds. "He said the base isn’t safe and wants to stay here for another week."
"Isn’t his Undercity supposed to be very safe?"
Ronan Kendrick nodded. "But he said living in the Undercity is boring."
Ronan Kendrick mulled it over for a few seconds. "Then I’ll just knock him out later, stuff him in a sack, and toss him back at the base."
Evelyn gave Ronan Kendrick a thumbs-up. "Impressive. But if he wants to stay, let him. He’s the one who arranged for this house, anyway."
"I have to go to the base tomorrow to pick some things up. Want to come with?"
Evelyn’s eyes lit up. "Can I?"
"Of course. There’s a lot to collect. First, we’ll go to the medicinal fields to harvest herbs, then to the pharmaceutical factory to get oxygen cylinders and other finished medicines."
The last time he went to the base, he had wanted to take Evelyn to the medicinal fields to harvest some herbs, but something came up and they couldn’t go.
Evelyn nodded. "I saw the seeds you brought back. Once Ethan Dawson has the black soil tilled, we’ll fence off three acres for a medicinal field."
The two of them talked for a long time, until Evelyn couldn’t fight off her drowsiness and fell asleep first. Ronan Kendrick turned off the small night light, wrapped his arms around her, and closed his eyes.
The next morning at eight, Evelyn was woken by a commotion outside. Ronan Kendrick was still fast asleep. Evelyn got out of bed and walked to the window.
"What’s wrong?"
Ronan Kendrick got up and came up behind her, resting his chin on the top of her head as they both looked out to see what was happening.
"It’s noisy outside. I can’t make out what they’re shouting about, but I can hear May Warren crying."
Evelyn yawned. "What time are we going to the base to get the supplies?"
"We’ll go after lunch. It’s still early. Want to sleep a little more?"
Evelyn shook her head. "I’m wide awake now."
When the two of them went downstairs, everyone else was at the main gate, watching the commotion.
Even Rhys Chase was standing in the crowd, holding a teacup.
Evelyn didn’t go out. Although she liked hearing gossip, she didn’t like being part of the crowd.
After a while, Quincy came inside, holding Zoe.
"I’ve got big news for you all! They found May Warren’s son. He was in a septic tank outside the villa complex."
Evelyn and Ronan Kendrick exchanged a look. "Dead?"
"Dead. They brought the body back."
"How did they find him?"
Quincy clicked his tongue twice. "It’s so dramatic! May Warren found him herself. You know how she’s been going to the toilets every day to scoop up dung to throw at people? Well, she was doing that today and fished her own son out."
