Magic Space: Struggling to Survive in the Apocalypse
Chapter 562: Surface Shelter 4"These damn Yarrowites. How can they be so arrogant?"
"I’d love to drop a mushroom cloud on them."
"Liam, this Arden Base you mentioned, how many people does it have?"
"Arden Base is at the border of the Southward and Wessia. There aren’t many survivors, probably fewer than two hundred thousand."
"What if Yarrowites flood into our country? No way. We can’t let foreigners enter our country." This was something no citizen could tolerate.
"The management is discussing countermeasures. We might bicker amongst ourselves, but when it’s crunch time, we have to present a united front. Don’t worry, everyone, we have enough weapons." Liam Sterling’s tone relaxed.
"What a mess. Internal strife and external threats... I don’t know how the other bases will get through this oxygen crisis. The sun still hasn’t come out. If this keeps up, humanity might really go extinct."
Everyone was worried. Even with The Undercity and the shelters, as long as the sun didn’t return, no one could truly breathe easy.
"The sun will come out eventually. Maybe it’ll even be out tomorrow. Let’s not be too pessimistic, everyone."
"Liam, if the sun isn’t out tomorrow, I swear I’ll beat you to death."
Liam Sterling shrugged. "Who knows? Maybe the sun really will come out tomorrow."
Construction of the surface shelter was in full swing, and everyone had been busy lately. The area of the black soil was huge. Even with Ronan Kendrick helping, the four of them had only managed to till half of it after all this time. Fortunately, the black soil in the pocket dimension was very flat and fertile, so tilling wasn’t difficult.
After the pocket dimension was fully developed, the growth cycle of crops planted inside was halved. Evelyn Ford planned to plant some more pumpkins. They still hadn’t finished the ones grown back at the safe zone. Those pumpkins were a unique variety from Shale Province, with a single large one weighing dozens, or even over a hundred, pounds.
They could also plant more sweet potatoes and potatoes. Cassava, though, was out of the question. Land that had been used to grow cassava was difficult to use for other crops, as the cassava absorbed all the nutrients. Besides, cassava wasn’t that nutritious.
In the afternoon, Ronan Kendrick left with Liam Sterling again, while Evelyn Ford and the others went into the pocket dimension to work.
Evelyn sensed some supplies being brought into the pocket dimension but didn’t go check on them. She assumed it was medicine or canned food. After all, Ronan had been going out to collect supplies every day recently, and that’s usually what he brought back.
When Ronan Kendrick returned that evening, he indirectly asked Evelyn Ford if she liked what he had brought into the pocket dimension during the day. Evelyn was taken aback for a moment.
"Wasn’t it medicine you brought in?"
"Of course not. Rhys Chase got a batch of jade from some of the other managers and gave it all to us."
Evelyn Ford’s eyes lit up. "I didn’t look. Is there a lot?"
"A lot. More than ten tons."
Even if she didn’t know if it would be useful, who could refuse jade? They hadn’t even cut the previous batch, and now here were another ten-plus tons. It had to be said, Rhys Chase really got it.
Ronan Kendrick gently stroked Evelyn Ford’s hair. "When I have some free time, I’ll cut all the jade and make you jewelry."
’All that jade... if it were all made into jewelry, it would be enough to crush me to death.’
But Evelyn Ford was still very happy.
She possessed the most precious treasure in the entire world. In this world, no one was better than Ronan Kendrick.
「 」
Evelyn Ford had been in a great mood the past few days. You could even hear her humming while she worked.
Ronan Kendrick was still very busy, spending most of his time outside collecting supplies. Rhys Chase was also busy. Ever since moving from Kestrel Villa to The Undercity, none of them had seen him.
Recently, the base had been developing a giant Solar Lamp. The lamp was about the size of a basketball court. If development was successful, they would only need to place two of them above the base to eliminate the need for streetlights. Once lit, the entire base would be as bright as day, illuminating even the sky. Most importantly, the Solar Lamps could emit heat.
"Right now, the base is short on copper ore. Mr. Chase is organizing people to go find some."
"Do the Solar Lamps need copper ore?" Evelyn Ford’s knowledge of physics was average. She remembered the raw materials for light bulbs were nitrogen, tungsten filament, and glass.
"Yes. We might have to seek help from other bases. Driving is very dangerous right now, so they’d have to go out with oxygen tanks. The other bases will probably make some outrageous demands. We’re worried they’ll ask for huge amounts of food."
’Copper ore?’
’There are plenty of mines in the pocket dimension, including several copper mines.’ Evelyn Ford’s eyes glinted.
"Liam, how much copper ore do you need?"
"Probably two or three tons."
"I have some here. I can provide it." ’With the Solar Lamps, maybe plants can photosynthesize, release oxygen, and humanity can survive.’
Liam Sterling looked like he was about to kneel before Evelyn Ford.
"Evelyn, you really have copper ore?"
"I do, but I can’t get it out right now. Is tomorrow okay?"
"More than okay! Evelyn, I’ll definitely report this to Mr. Chase. Just say the word if you want anything. As long as the base has it, we’ll get it for you."
Evelyn Ford smiled. "I don’t need anything for now. Do you need any other materials? Like tungsten, iron, or quartz sand?"
Quartz sand was the raw material for glass, and the outer shell of a light bulb was glass. The Solar Lamps would surely require higher-quality glass. Evelyn had checked; there was quartz sand in the mining area of her dimension.
"The base still has a surplus of quartz sand, and glass too. Our country’s glass is very high-quality, so no worries there."
Evelyn Ford nodded.
"Okay, then Ronan and I will go prepare the copper ore for you now."
Liam Sterling nodded. "Thank you for your hard work, Ronan, and you too, Evelyn."
"Don’t mention it." ’We’ve received so much jade from them, it’s only natural to give something back.’
After Liam Sterling left, Evelyn Ford called the others over. Only after leading everyone into the pocket dimension did she tell them about the mining.
"The mining equipment is all here. Ronan Kendrick, Ethan Dawson, Miles Vaughn, Quincy, Peter Owens, and me. Just the few of us will go in to mine. The mining area is dusty, so everyone needs to wear a hard hat, mask, gloves, and a lead suit before entering. The copper ore has some radiation. It’s not a high level of risk, but everyone still needs to be especially careful. Mining three tons should be enough."
Ronan Kendrick didn’t approve of Evelyn Ford going in with them, but her physical constitution was good. Plus, she had read many books and watched many videos on mining, so she could be a help to them.
"It’s fine, I’ll be wearing a lead suit. Besides, we’re only mining three or four tons. It’ll be over quickly."
Ronan Kendrick pressed his lips together. "Be careful."
"I know, I know."
As soon as they entered the mining area, the smell of various ores assaulted their nostrils. After locating the copper ore, they began preparations for extraction.
The copper ore looked no different from regular rock, except for the blue, purple, and brown patches on its surface.
The Copper Mine Mountain was essentially one giant chunk of copper ore. Mining it wasn’t actually difficult, but for a mountain this huge, without explosives, they could only use an excavator to chip away at it bit by bit.
"This is pure copper ore! It doesn’t need any refining. My God, we’ve struck it rich!"
"Can’t sell it for money. How have we ’struck it rich’?"
"We’ve made such a huge contribution! We’ll be able to do whatever we want in the base from now on."
"Do whatever we want? Quincy, are you a crab?"
"Where’s the excavator? Hurry up and bring it over so we can get to work."
