Magic Space: Struggling to Survive in the Apocalypse
Chapter 596: The Polar Night EndsThe dimension had become a massive farm. Besides the two children, there were just twelve adults, including Wendy. There was far too much to do, with an endless stream of chores every day.
Just collecting the chicken and duck eggs took several hours each day.
Taylor Vance and Zion Lowell were in charge of transporting the chicken and duck eggs by tricycle. The others grabbed bamboo baskets and headed into the poultry yard to start working. The farming area was even larger than the several farms at the base. The chickens, ducks, and geese in the dimension were all free-range and weren’t fed commercial feed, so even the broilers had grown up like pasture-raised fowl. The grass was littered with so many eggs that you could easily step on one if you weren’t careful.
After collecting the eggs, everyone had dinner together in the dimension’s wooden cabin. By the time they left the dimension, it was already late. The others returned to their dorms, while Evelyn Ford and Ronan Kendrick went into the bathroom one after the other to wash up.
The next day, Evelyn was still asleep when she was suddenly jolted awake by a frantic pounding on the door. She was about to get up when Ronan pushed her back down.
"You go back to sleep. I’ll get the door."
The pounding continued, suggesting something urgent. Ronan walked out of the bedroom to open the door.
"What took you so long? Good news! The sun is out! Ronan, the sun is out!"
Quincy was so excited he was jumping up and down like a crazed monkey. Ronan raised an eyebrow in surprise, but he didn’t seem excited at all.
"Ronan, are you still half-asleep? The sun is out, did you hear me? Where’s Evelyn?"
"I heard you. She’s still sleeping. How did you find out?"
Quincy was completely unable to calm down. He wanted nothing more than to rush over and kiss Ronan, but he lost his nerve when he met Ronan’s chilly gaze.
"I woke up early and decided to wander around the other floors. That’s when I ran into Liam Sterling, who was just coming back from outside. He was all bundled up and even holding a sun umbrella. I was just about to ask him if it was raining when he rushed over like a madman, slapped me on the shoulder, and told me the sun was out."
Ronan nodded. "What time did the sun come out?"
"Seven-thirty this morning."
It was now eight-thirty, so the sun had already been out for an hour.
After telling Zoe and Wyatt Vaughn the news, Quincy had immediately run over to pound on Evelyn and Ronan’s door. He still had to tell everyone else the good news, so he left Ronan standing there, humming a tune as he walked over to Officer Graham’s dorm and began hammering wildly on the door.
Seeing Quincy acting deliriously happy, Ronan couldn’t help but let the corner of his mouth twitch into a small smile before he returned to the bedroom.
"What’s going on?" In the unlit bedroom, Evelyn squinted at Ronan as he walked in from outside.
"You’re not going to sleep a little longer?"
Evelyn shook her head. "No, I’m up. I need to go check on the waterwheels. What did Quincy want? I heard his ridiculously loud laughter."
Ronan poured Evelyn a glass of water. "The sun’s out."
Evelyn froze. She stared at Ronan in disbelief until he repeated himself and gave a firm nod.
Evelyn shot upright, leaping right out of bed.
"I’m going to go see."
"Not so fast. Put on your shoes first. And don’t forget our theory—with the polar night ending so abruptly, the sun might be giving off sun poison. It’s not safe to go out right now."
Just then, a crackle of static sounded, and a familiar voice came over the base’s broadcast system.
[Good morning, all residents.
An urgent announcement: At 7:30 this morning, the long-awaited sun rose once again in the east. Over the past hour, all base experts have conducted tests on the sun’s heat and light. The heat is excessive, and the light is too blinding. Two months ago, we issued a notice that when the sun re-emerged, it would carry ’sun poison,’ which poses a threat to us humans. It may take half a month to a full month for this sun poison to dissipate.
Residents in open areas, please find a shady spot immediately to avoid the sunlight. The base will be distributing lightweight, heat-resistant suits to all residents. Please do not be nervous or worried.
If anyone feels unwell, please report to the base hospital immediately to receive treatment. We ask all residents to maintain discipline and cooperate with our work.]
The broadcast ended. Evelyn took the glass and had a sip of water. Her heart was racing, and she felt almost light-headed. The polar night was over. She wasn’t dreaming. It was really over.
Evelyn calmly changed her clothes, put on her shoes, washed her face, and combed her hair. She even made a point to apply some lip balm. She appeared perfectly composed, but only she knew how thrilled she was in that moment.
When she opened the door to her dorm, the others were already outside, cheering and celebrating. Wendy and Zoe saw her and came running over.
"Auntie, the sun’s out!" Wendy’s little face was all smiles.
"Auntie, I won! Can I have the spoils now?" Zoe was only concerned with the prizes in the box; she wasn’t interested in everyone else’s excitement and cheers.
Evelyn smiled. "Of course you can. Do you want them now?"
Zoe shook her head. "Give them to me tonight. Everyone’s going crazy with excitement right now, so no one cares whether I got my spoils or not."
Seeing her serious expression, Evelyn couldn’t help but tease her. "Didn’t Auntie say she believed you would win? Your promise to give me half the spoils—does that still count?"
"Of course. What’s mine is yours, Auntie. You don’t have to ask."
Zoe puffed out her chest, her face beaming. Thinking about how Wendy didn’t get any of the spoils, she leaned in close to her and whispered, "Miss Wendy, I’ll give you the pink pearl later. That way, you’ll have a pair. The two pearls should be a family; we can’t let them be separated."
Wendy poked Zoe’s chubby little cheek. "One for you, and one for me. That way we both have one. Wouldn’t that be better?"
Zoe shook her head. "But I have other things. You’re my favorite big sister, so I have to share with you."
"You won the spoils, and you shared this good news with me. That’s a gift in itself. Zoe, we’ll each take one pearl. I’ll always be your big sister."
"Okay then. In that case, I’ll give you Mr. Dawson’s gun. I know you like pistols."
Wendy nodded. "Thank you, Zoe."
Evelyn watched the two of them whispering from the side. In the hallway, people were still cheering. Neighbors from all around had come out of their rooms. Even the usually introverted Joelle Finch was holding Miles Vaughn’s hand, jumping up and down with joy.
The base’s Solar Lamps had been turned off. At nine in the morning, the sun was at its highest point in the sky. The ground temperature had already reached a blistering 55°C, while the air temperature had climbed to 27°C.
Because the sun had risen so unexpectedly, seven-thirty in the morning was right when the workers were heading to their shifts. Many of them were directly exposed to the sunlight on their way. Fortunately, the sun’s heat and light intensity were still low at that hour, so by noon, no one had shown any adverse effects.
"There’s no such thing as ’sun poison.’ All that talk just made everyone panic, and for what? It’s been hours, and everything outside is perfectly fine. Rhys Chase, how have you gotten more muddled with age?"
Inside a conference room in the administration building, the management team was holding a meeting. One of the managers, who didn’t get along well with Rhys Chase, suddenly spoke up in a sarcastic tone.
