-------------------------------------------------

The pillar of golden fire continued piercing the heavens.

The rain fell in torrents.

Lightning flashed endlessly across the dark clouds, each brilliant streak illuminating the battlefield for only a heartbeat before darkness reclaimed everything once again.

No one moved.

Thousands of soldiers from both armies stood rooted to the spot, their eyes fixed upon the crater.

Another footstep echoed.

Tak...

The chains answered.

KLANG...

Another step followed.

Tak...

KLANG...

The rhythm continued.

Slow. Measured. Unhurried.

Every step sounded closer than the last.

Then...

The flames suddenly began changing.

Instead of shooting wildly into the sky...

They started leaning apart.

As though something within them was forcing the inferno itself to make way.

The blazing fire slowly separated to the left and right.

Between those walls of divine flame...

A shadow appeared.

At first...

It was nothing more than a dark silhouette.

Broad shoulders. An enormous frame.

The rain and fire made it impossible to distinguish any features.

Yet...

Everyone could clearly see one thing.

Heavy iron chains were wrapped around the figure’s entire body.

They crossed over the shoulders.

Circled the waist.

Bound the forearms.

Even from this distance...

The chains gleamed whenever lightning illuminated the battlefield.

KLANG...

Another step.

The shadow became clearer.

In its right hand...

Something enormous rested casually against the shoulder.

The curved outline reflected the lightning.

An Aruval.

Its massive blade shimmered with an edge that seemed capable of splitting both flesh and fate alike.

In the left hand...

A long spear stood firmly planted upon the ground with every step.

Its sharp tip glowed faintly beneath the curtain of rain.

The unknown figure continued walking.

Each footstep echoed through Malikavana.

Each movement caused the chains wrapped around its body to collide with one another.

The metallic echoes mixed with the thunder overhead until the battlefield itself seemed to vibrate.

Pushpasura slowly narrowed his crimson eyes.

"...Who..."

he whispered unconsciously.

"...is that?"

Even the surviving Rakshasa generals no longer laughed.

The overwhelming confidence that had filled their expressions moments earlier had quietly disappeared.

Meanwhile...

Bhishma simply smiled.

Hanuman lowered his head respectfully.

Lord Parashurama remained silent.

Yet the faint smile upon the immortal sage’s face grew a little wider.

The shadow continued approaching.

The closer it came... The larger it became.

The towering walls of golden fire behind it stretched its silhouette across the battlefield.

Its shadow reached the feet of both armies.

For one strange moment...

It felt less like a man walking out of the flames...

And more like the flames themselves had taken human form.

Then...

The footsteps stopped.

Silence.

"...."

"...."

"...."

The rain continued pouring.

The thunder rolled across the heavens.

Everything waited.

Suddenly...

A deep laugh echoed from within the flames.

"Ha..."

It was quiet. Low. Almost amused.

Then...

The laughter grew louder.

"Hahahahaha..."

The sound rolled across the battlefield like distant thunder.

It wasn’t the laughter of madness.

Nor was it the laughter of joy.

It was the laugh of someone who had finally awakened after enduring more than enough.

It carried anger. Resolve.

And an unsettling confidence.

Every Rakshasa instinctively stiffened.

Several younger soldiers took another step backwards without realizing it.

The laughter slowly came to an end.

The shadow finally stepped beyond the curtain of golden flames.

At that exact moment...

A bolt of lightning split the heavens.

CRAAAAACK!!

For a single heartbeat...

The entire battlefield was illuminated.

Everyone finally saw him.

The figure standing before them... Was Devaratha.

Yet... At the same time...

He was no longer the Devaratha they had known.

His skin had turned the deep black of rain-soaked stone.

Across his broad chest, shoulders and forehead, thick streaks of sacred sandalwood paste shone brilliantly beneath the rain.

Heavy iron chains wrapped around his entire body, not as restraints...

But like sacred ornaments accepted through solemn vows.

His long hair flowed wildly behind him despite the rain.

A thick, majestic moustache now framed his face, giving him the fierce appearance of an ancient guardian who had stood watch over forgotten temples for countless generations.

His emerald eyes...

Had changed.

The warmth they once carried had disappeared.

What remained was an unwavering gaze burning with righteous fury.

Not hatred. Not blind rage.

The fury of one who had returned to punish evil after witnessing the suffering of those under his protection.

In his right hand...

He firmly held the colossal Aruval.

Rainwater slid along its curved blade before dripping onto the battlefield.

In his left...

The divine spear rested against the earth.

The ground beneath its tip quietly cracked.

The chains covering his body gently swayed.

KLANG...

KLANG...

The metallic echoes seemed louder now that everyone could finally see their source.

The rain continued falling around him.

Yet...

Not a single drop appeared capable of diminishing the presence surrounding him.

The battlefield remained utterly silent.

Not a single warrior spoke. Not even Pushpasura.

He simply stared.

For the first time since the war had begun...

He found himself unable to recognize the man standing before him.

This wasn’t merely King Devaratha.

This wasn’t simply the warrior who had challenged him for one hundred days.

Standing before the armies...

Wrapped in sacred chains...

Bearing the Aruval and the spear...

With the terrifying majesty of a guardian who had risen from the very depths of the earth...

Was the living embodiment of Sangili Karuppan.

The guardian deity had not descended from the heavens.

He had risen from within the king.

And the moment Devaratha slowly lifted his head and looked directly at the Rakshasa army...

Even the storm above seemed to grow quieter.

As though the heavens themselves had fallen silent...

To witness the return of the Guardian.

The battlefield remained wrapped in silence.

The storm continued to rage overhead.

Rain poured relentlessly across Malikavana, washing away the blood that had stained the earth for one hundred days.

Between the two armies...

The newly emerged guardian stood motionless.

The golden flames surrounding him gradually faded until only the rain remained.

Water flowed over the dark skin of his transformed body before running down the sacred sandalwood markings painted across his chest and shoulders.

The heavy iron chains wrapped around him gently swayed.

KLANG...

KLANG...

Their metallic echoes seemed unnaturally loud in the silence.

Devaratha slowly lifted his head.

His emerald eyes had not disappeared.

They still remained.

But now they blazed with a terrifying intensity beneath the fierce appearance of Sangili Karuppan.

He slowly drew a deep breath.

The sound alone echoed across the battlefield.

Then...

He spoke.

His voice was no longer the calm, youthful voice everyone had known.

It had become deeper.

Heavier.

Every word carried a commanding weight that seemed to shake the hearts of those who heard it.

It was the voice of a guardian passing judgment.

"Pushpasura..."

The name rolled across Malikavana like distant thunder.

Every Rakshasa instinctively looked towards their king.

Every allied soldier stood a little straighter.

The rain continued falling between them.

Devaratha slowly planted the butt of his spear upon the ground.

THOOM!

The earth trembled beneath the impact.

His Aruval rested across his shoulder as the chains around his body clinked softly.

For a brief moment...

He simply looked at Pushpasura.

Then his deep voice echoed once again.

"For one hundred days... I stood before you."

"For one hundred days... I endured every wound... Every humiliation... Every scheme you devised."

"You buried me beneath the earth..."

"You sought to imprison my mind..."

"You believed this battlefield had already witnessed my end."

A faint smile slowly appeared beneath his thick moustache.

It wasn’t a cheerful smile.

It was the smile of someone who had finally finished enduring.

"And yet..."

"I stand before you once again."

He slowly pointed the blade of the Aruval towards Pushpasura.

The curved weapon reflected the flashes of lightning above.

"The hundred days are over. The vow has been fulfilled."

"My endurance ends here. My judgment begins now."

The battlefield fell into complete silence.

Even the thunder seemed to pause.

Devaratha’s eyes never left Pushpasura.

His next words echoed like a decree.

"Pushpasura... You called for this war."

"You sought this battlefield."

"You wished to measure your strength against mine."

His grip tightened around the spear.

"So come."

"The place where we crossed weapons on the first day... The place where we fought through every sunrise and every sunset..."

"The place where neither of us yielded..."

He slowly turned his head towards the centre of the battlefield where the scarred earth still bore the marks of their countless battles.

"There."

He pointed with the spear.

"Our battle began there."

"It shall also end there. I have returned."

"Now..."

His deep voice shook the battlefield.

"Face me."

For several heartbeats...

Pushpasura said nothing.

He simply stared.

His crimson eyes remained fixed upon Devaratha’s transformed appearance.

The black skin.

The sacred sandalwood.

The chains.

The Aruval.

The spear.

The overwhelming presence that seemed completely different from the man he had buried beneath the earth.

Then...

A vein bulged across Pushpasura’s forehead.

His expression slowly darkened.

His lips curled into an ugly snarl.

"Tch..."

He clicked his tongue before letting out a humourless laugh.

"So... You really crawled out."

His monstrous fingers tightened around the railing of his chariot until it splintered beneath the pressure.

"I should have known."

He shook his head while glaring at Devaratha.

"You’re worse than a cockroach."

"No matter how many times you’re crushed... You simply refuse to die."

His crimson eyes burned with irritation.

"I buried you. I poisoned your mind."

"I beat you for nearly thirty days without mercy."

"I watched you sink beneath the earth with my own eyes."

"And yet..."

He spat upon the ground.

"...here you are again."

He pointed his sword directly at Devaratha.

"You truly are the most persistent pest I’ve ever seen."

With a furious roar, Pushpasura slammed his foot against his chariot.

"Move!"

The monstrous skeletal beasts pulling it let out horrifying screams before charging forward.

The chariot thundered across the battlefield, crushing shattered weapons and broken stones beneath its wheels.

It did not stop until it reached the very centre of Malikavana.

The same ground where the first arrow had been released.

Where their duel of archery had begun.

Where they had crossed spears.

Axes.

Swords.

Bare fists.

Where both had bled.

Where both had endured.

Pushpasura stepped down from the chariot.

His boots sank slightly into the rain-soaked earth.

Across from him...

Devaratha slowly began walking forward.

Tak...

KLANG...

Tak...

KLANG...

The iron chains continued announcing every step.

Neither man hurried. Neither needed to.

The distance between them slowly disappeared.

Around them...

Both armies instinctively parted, creating a vast circle once again.

Just as they had done on the very first day of the war.

Only this time...

There was no laughter.

No cheers. No taunts.

Everyone understood.

This was no longer another day’s battle.

This was the battle that would decide the fate of Malikavana...

And perhaps the fate of all the realms.
