Devara had barely managed to drive the first swarm of piranhas away when another dark mass appeared in the distance.

He initially thought it was the same colony regrouping, but then another swarm emerged from behind it, followed by another.

His expression slowly changed.

"You’re bringing friends now?"

The river seemed to come alive around him.

Several enormous colonies of piranhas converged on his position, attracted by the commotion and, more importantly, by the countless souls still clinging to Devara’s body.

The translucent spirits had unintentionally turned him into the largest source of food in the entire river.

Devara tightened his grip on Rudhirabhra.

"All right. Come on."

He swung the divine weapon through the water, scattering one swarm before turning toward another that was rushing in from his left.

Golden flashes repeatedly illuminated the green river as he cut through the predators, forcing them away whenever they came close enough to reach the souls.

But there were simply too many.

While Devara was occupied dealing with the growing swarm, another figure suddenly appeared ahead of him.

Kandarpaasura.

The Asura had finally caught up.

His massive body pushed through the water with considerable force, his spear still in his hand.

The souls around him had been repeatedly cut away, allowing him to move far more freely than Devara, who was still carrying an enormous chain of spirits behind him.

Kandarpaasura looked toward Devara.

Then he looked at the opposite shore.

A broad grin slowly appeared across his face.

He had overtaken him.

For someone as proud as Kandarpaasura, that moment was enough to restore the confidence he had briefly lost.

He passed Devara without slowing down and turned his head just enough to give him a knowing grin.

"Looks like I’m ahead."

Devara glanced at him.

"You seem very pleased with yourself."

"I should be."

Kandarpaasura gave a short laugh.

"You spent all this time carrying those souls while I simply cleared my path."

He continued swimming toward the opposite bank.

"Don’t take too long."

Devara shook his head.

"Go ahead."

Kandarpaasura’s grin widened before he turned his attention back toward the shore.

Behind him, however, the situation around Devara was becoming increasingly chaotic.

The new piranha colonies had completely surrounded him.

Thousands of tiny bodies moved through the green water in every direction, forming a living circle around him. They weren’t attacking him directly yet. They were waiting.

Waiting for an opening.

Waiting for him to become exhausted.

Waiting for the souls attached to him to become easier prey.

Devara slowly turned in place, Rudhirabhra held firmly in his hand.

Every direction looked the same.

Piranhas. More piranhas.

And even more approaching from the depths.

He glanced toward Kandarpaasura, who was already moving farther ahead.

"Enjoy your lead."

Devara’s eyes narrowed as he looked back at the enormous swarm surrounding him.

"I’ve got a little problem to solve first."

The piranhas suddenly moved closer.

Devara raised Rudhirabhra.

The golden glow of the weapon illuminated his face.

"Come on, then."

The swarm surged forward.

And Devara disappeared beneath a wall of flashing teeth.

Just as the enormous swarm of piranhas began closing in and the larger aquatic creatures moved toward Devara from every direction,

He suddenly stopped trying to fight them with Rudhirabhra.

He looked around once, quickly judging the distance between the predators and the opposite bank, before a different idea came to him.

A faint golden radiance appeared around his wrist.

Something materialized in his hand.

An iron chain.

It wasn’t an ordinary chain. Every link carried a faint divine glow, and the moment it appeared beneath the green waters, several of the nearby creatures instinctively moved away from it.

Devara recognized it immediately.

It was the same divine chain that wrapped around his body whenever he assumed his Sangali Karuppu avatar.

Devara gave it a small tug.

"So you’re coming in handy after all."

He heard the movement of something enormous approaching from his side.

Turning his head, he saw a gigantic shark charging directly toward him, its decayed jaws opening wide as it prepared to swallow both him and the souls clinging to his body.

Devara waited.

At the last possible moment, he moved sideways.

The shark shot past him.

But before it could disappear into the green water, Devara swung the iron chain.

The chain flew through the water and passed directly over the shark’s enormous open jaws.

Devara immediately caught the other end and tightened his grip.

The shark continued forward.

Devara was suddenly pulled along with it.

His body shot through the water.

For a moment, he simply allowed the creature’s enormous strength to carry him.

Then he realized what was happening.

A grin appeared on his face.

"That’s better."

Instead of fighting against the river, he had found something that could pull him through it.

The shark was far stronger and faster than he was while swimming with the enormous burden of souls attached to him.

By holding onto the chain, Devara could use the creature’s own momentum to propel himself toward the opposite shore.

He adjusted his grip.

The shark tried to dive deeper, but Devara pulled the chain upward, forcing its head slightly toward the surface.

The creature thrashed violently.

Devara held on.

The souls clinging to his body were dragged along behind him, but at least their weight was no longer slowing his own movements as much.

"Come on, big fellow."

The shark accelerated.

Devara was pulled through the river at an incredible speed.

The piranhas that had been surrounding him were suddenly left behind, their swarm breaking apart as the enormous shark dragged Devara straight through their midst.

Several of the smaller fish attempted to follow.

Devara swung Rudhirabhra with his free hand, driving them away whenever they came too close.

He could see the opposite bank getting closer.

Far ahead, Kandarpaasura was still making his way through the river, repeatedly using his spear to clear away the souls that attempted to hold him.

For the first time, Devara began gaining ground again.

Kandarpaasura glanced backward.

His expression immediately changed when he saw Devara being pulled through the river behind an enormous shark.

"What is he doing?"

Devara gave the shark’s chain another firm pull.

The creature surged forward.

Kandarpaasura stared in disbelief.

Instead of fighting the river, Devara had turned one of its most dangerous predators into his own means of transportation.

And judging by the rapidly approaching shore, the strange solution was working.

The enormous shark continued racing through the River of Sin, its powerful body cutting through the green water while Devara held tightly to the divine iron chain.

What had started as a desperate attempt to escape the predators had slowly turned into something that looked almost ridiculous from the riverbank.

The shark suddenly accelerated.

Its massive body rose out of the water, launching itself into the air in a graceful arc.

For a moment, Devara was pulled completely out of the river along with it.

Water scattered in every direction as the shark sailed through the air, its decayed body silhouetted against the barren landscape.

Devara, still holding the chain, remained balanced behind it as though he were riding a horse rather than being dragged behind an undead shark.

He landed back on the surface with the creature.

Devara laughed.

"Now we’re getting somewhere!"

The shark thrashed beneath him, trying to determine where to go, but Devara quickly understood that he could influence its movement through the chain.

He pulled the chain toward his left.

The shark immediately turned.

Devara pulled again, directing it toward the opposite bank.

The creature responded to the force and changed its trajectory, cutting diagonally across the river.

Devara began using the chain almost like reins.

A pull to one side made the shark turn.

A tug upward made it rise closer to the surface.

A stronger pull toward the opposite bank made it accelerate in that direction.

Soon he wasn’t simply being dragged by the shark.

He was controlling where it went.

Another group of piranhas rushed toward them.

Devara pulled sharply.

The shark veered to the side, narrowly avoiding the swarm.

"Good!"

The creature continued forward.

A huge aquatic predator suddenly emerged from beneath them.

Devara pulled the chain upward.

The shark leapt.

The enormous creature passed beneath them as the shark sailed over it, once again landing in the river with a tremendous splash.

The souls attached to Devara were dragged along behind him, but strangely, many of them had stopped struggling.

They simply clung to one another and held onto him as the shark carried them across the river.

From farther ahead, Kandarpaasura glanced backward again.

His expression became increasingly irritated.

Devara was now moving considerably faster than before.

And he wasn’t swimming.

He had somehow turned one of the river’s undead predators into his personal mount.

Kandarpaasura tightened his grip on his spear.

"That human..."

Meanwhile, Devara grinned as he pulled the chain once more.

The shark changed direction exactly as he wanted.

"Left."

The creature turned.

"Now forward."

It accelerated.

Devara looked toward the opposite bank.

It was getting closer.

For the first time since entering the River of Sin, he felt confident that he might actually reach the other side without having to fight every creature in the river.

He glanced at the shark beneath him.

"You know, you’re not such a bad ride."

The undead shark responded by leaping out of the water again.

Devara laughed as they sailed through the air together before crashing back into the river.

From the shore, several of the watching gods could only stare.

Narada slowly shook his head.

"Of all the possible ways to cross this river..."

Ganesha smiled.

"He found the strangest one."

Kartikeya chuckled.

"But it seems to be working."

And with another pull of the divine chain, Devara continued riding the undead shark toward the opposite shore.
