Meanwhile, from the opposite side of the lake,

Devara had been watching the commotion with growing disbelief.

He had initially remained hidden among the trees, carefully observing the golden herd and trying to understand which of them he should approach.

But the moment the stallions suddenly turned toward one particular direction and unleashed streams of brilliant golden fire, his attention was immediately drawn toward the source of the disturbance.

Through the gaps between the trees, Devara caught sight of Kandarpaasura.

The asura was darting across the clearing, narrowly escaping one blast after another while the golden stallions pursued him with an aggression that seemed almost ridiculous considering how majestic and peaceful they had appeared only moments earlier.

Devara stared for a few seconds.

Then he slowly let out a sigh.

"Of course."

He rubbed his forehead.

"That fellow has somehow managed to enrage the entire herd."

Another torrent of golden fire crossed the clearing, forcing Kandarpaasura to leap high into the air.

Devara shook his head.

"He couldn’t simply approach one of them quietly, could he? No, he had to announce himself and turn the whole place into a battlefield."

Despite the situation, a faint smile tugged at the corner of Devara’s mouth.

Still, the amusement quickly disappeared when he looked back toward the golden lake.

The stallions were moving farther and farther away from the shoreline as they chased Kandarpaasura.

If the commotion continued for too long, there was a real possibility that the herd would become disturbed enough to abandon the area and return to the golden lake.

And once they entered the lake, finding one again could become considerably harder.

Devara’s expression became serious.

"I cannot wait."

He looked toward the magnificent herd.

The rules were simple. No weapons. No mount.

He had to catch one and mount it before Kandarpaasura did.

The golden stallions were currently occupied with the asura, which gave Devara an opportunity.

But it was also a dangerous opportunity.

If he approached carelessly, they might mistake him for another threat and turn their golden flames toward him.

Devara took a slow breath.

"All right."

He stepped out from behind the trees.

The moment his foot touched the open ground, several of the nearby celestial horses lifted their heads.

Their ears turned toward him, and a few unicorns moved away cautiously.

Devara raised both hands, showing that he carried no weapon.

"I’m not here to hurt you."

The nearest golden stallion turned its head.

Its glowing eyes settled upon him.

Devara remained still.

He could feel the creature’s gaze examining him from head to toe.

Behind him, another roar echoed through the forest as Kandarpaasura continued fighting his way through the herd.

Devara glanced over his shoulder.

"Keep him busy for a little longer."

Then he looked back at the golden horses.

His eyes focused upon the largest stallion standing slightly apart from the others.

That one.

Its body was enormous, its golden mane flowing down its neck, and its presence was noticeably different from the others.

It did not appear frightened or agitated by Kandarpaasura’s attack.

Instead, it stood calmly, watching everything unfold.

Devara’s instincts told him that this was the one he should try for.

He began walking toward it slowly.

One step at a time.

No sudden movements with no weapons and no divine tricks.

Just himself.

The stallion lowered its head slightly.

Devara stopped.

For several seconds, the two simply stared at each other.

Then the stallion pawed the ground.

Devara smiled faintly.

"Yes, I know. You don’t trust me yet."

The stallion gave a low snort.

"Fair enough."

Devara took another careful step.

Then another.

The golden horse suddenly moved backward.

Devara stopped again.

He did not chase it.

He understood that if he rushed now, he would only frighten it and send the entire herd running.

Instead, he waited.

The stallion studied him.

Devara studied it.

Across the clearing, Kandarpaasura suddenly shouted as three golden stallions charged toward him together.

Devara glanced in that direction.

"He’s buying me time without even realizing it."

A tiny grin appeared on Devara’s face.

But then he noticed something that made his expression sharpen.

The golden stallions were beginning to turn back toward the lake.

The herd had apparently decided that they had enough of the disturbance.

Devara’s eyes widened.

"No."

He immediately moved forward.

The stallion saw him coming.

It turned.

Devara accelerated.

The golden horse broke into a run toward the lake.

Devara chased after it.

"Not so fast!"

The race had begun.

Devara immediately increased his pace.

His feet barely seemed to touch the ground as he raced through the golden grass, his eyes locked upon the magnificent stallion ahead of him.

The horse’s golden mane streamed behind it like flowing sunlight, its powerful legs striking the earth with such force that small clouds of dust rose beneath its hooves.

Devara was closing the distance.

A few more steps.

His hand reached forward.

His fingers were just about to catch the flowing mane when the golden stallion suddenly shifted its entire body.

Devara’s eyes widened.

The horse twisted sharply to the side and changed direction without losing any of its momentum.

Its hooves dug into the ground for only a fraction of a second before it launched forward again, now running at an even greater speed.

Devara immediately adjusted his direction.

"You’re fast!"

He accelerated after it.

The stallion’s speed was astonishing.

It raced between the trees with perfect control, effortlessly weaving around trunks and rocks while Devara followed close behind.

Every time he thought he was finally within reach, the horse somehow managed to create another few feet of distance.

Devara grinned despite himself.

"So you want to make me work for it."

The stallion suddenly slowed.

Devara noticed the change.

His expression became cautious.

’Why did it stop?’

The answer came before he could fully process the thought.

The golden stallion planted its front hooves firmly into the earth and stopped almost instantly.

Devara was still moving forward.

"Wait..."

The horse suddenly lifted both its hind legs.

Its muscles tightened.

The golden hooves began glowing.

Not merely shining, but radiating an intense golden light that grew brighter by the second.

Energy gathered around them, forming swirling currents of divine power that made the air itself tremble.

Devara’s eyes widened.

"Oh, you clever creature."

The stallion’s ears flicked backward.

It had waited until Devara was directly behind it.

Then its hind legs began moving forward with terrifying force.

The kick was not an ordinary horse’s kick.

The accumulated golden energy around its hooves erupted outward as the stallion prepared to send both legs crashing directly into Devara’s chest.

Devara instantly understood what was coming.

He had been chasing the horse.

Now the horse had decided to hunt him.

"That’s a powerful kick."

Devara’s body tensed.

The glowing hooves came toward him with tremendous force.

He had only a fraction of a second to react.

Just before the glowing hooves could connect with him, Devara did not slow down.

Instead, he dropped his body lower and slid forward beneath the stallion’s raised hind legs.

The golden hooves tore through the space where his head and chest had been only an instant earlier, releasing a powerful burst of golden energy that scorched the ground behind him.

Devara slid several feet across the grass before planting one hand against the ground and using the momentum to rise immediately.

The golden stallion had barely lowered its hind legs when Devara was already beside it.

His arm shot forward.

His fingers wrapped firmly around the thick golden mane near the creature’s neck.

"Got you!"

The stallion reacted instantly.

With a tremendous neigh, it reared onto its hind legs, lifting both front legs high into the air.

Its massive body towered above Devara, golden muscles tightening as its mane whipped wildly around its neck.

Devara held on.

The stallion’s eyes flashed with fury.

Then its mouth opened.

A brilliant golden glow erupted from deep within its throat.

Devara’s eyes widened.

"Again?"

The stallion unleashed a torrent of golden fire directly toward him.

Devara immediately shifted his body to the side.

The blazing stream passed dangerously close to his face and shoulder, illuminating his features with intense golden light before crashing into the ground behind him.

The earth erupted.

Devara tightened his grip around the stallion’s neck as the creature continued rearing, trying to shake him loose.

"You’re certainly not making this easy!"

The stallion violently twisted its body.

Devara’s feet left the ground for a moment as he was dragged along with it, but he refused to release his hold.

The golden mane slipped between his fingers, yet he tightened his grip again and pulled himself closer to the creature’s neck.

The horse kicked and bucked beneath him, its hooves striking the air while bursts of golden energy continued escaping from its mouth.

Devara ducked beneath another stream of fire.

The heat swept over his head.

He grinned.

"All right, then."

His arms tightened around the stallion’s neck.

"If you want to throw me off..."

He pulled himself upward, trying to get his body onto the horse’s back.

"...you’re going to have to work a lot harder than that."
