Devara walked away from Indhumati’s chamber, or at least that was what everyone believed.

He had barely gone a few steps down the corridor before he stopped and glanced back toward the decorated doorway.

A mischievous little idea had already formed in his mind.

He quickly looked around before slipping behind one of the massive ornamental pillars lining the corridor.

His elaborate wedding attire, with its countless jewels and golden embroidery, was far too noticeable to hide anywhere, so Devara pulled a large black shawl around himself, covering most of the glittering ornaments.

Only a small portion of his face remained visible beneath the dark fabric and he waited.

A few moments later, Queen Devayani stepped out of the chamber along with the maids.

Devayani was still speaking to them, apparently having remembered something she had forgotten earlier.

"Wait here for a moment. I need to bring something for Indhumati. I completely forgot about it."

The maids nodded and followed her down the corridor.

Devara remained perfectly still behind the pillar.

He waited until they had disappeared around the corner.

Then he slowly leaned out since now the corridor was empty.

A broad smile spread across his face.

"Perfect."

He quietly stepped away from the pillar, keeping the black shawl wrapped around himself.

He looked rather ridiculous trying to conceal an outfit that was practically designed to announce his presence from several rooms away, but Devara was determined.

He glanced toward Indhumati’s chamber.

"This time, nobody is stopping me."

With a quiet laugh, Devara began walking toward the door.

Inside the chamber,

Indhumati was still surrounded by attendants who were helping her prepare for the wedding.

She had no idea that her future husband had just managed to sneak past her mother by hiding behind a pillar like a thief trying to infiltrate his own palace.

And outside the chamber, Devara carefully approached the doorway, trying very hard not to let the jewels beneath his shawl make even the slightest sound.

For a king who had faced rakshasas and divine beasts without hesitation, sneaking into his bride’s chamber before the wedding had somehow become his most carefully planned mission of the day.

Devara quietly slipped into the chamber and immediately pulled the door shut behind him.

The moment the latch settled into place, he remained with his back against the door for a second, making absolutely certain that nobody had followed him.

The black shawl remained wrapped tightly around his body, concealing the extravagant wedding attire beneath it.

Even the jewels that had made him look like a walking treasury were now hidden beneath the dark cloth.

He turned toward the chamber.

Indhumati was standing before the large polished mirror while her attendants had helped arrange the final details of her bridal attire.

She had been examining her reflection when she noticed movement behind her in the mirror.

She froze.

Her eyes immediately shifted toward the unfamiliar figure standing near the door.

For a heartbeat, she simply stared.

Then her expression changed.

Indhumati hurriedly turned around, her heart suddenly pounding as she realized that a stranger had somehow entered her private chamber.

Her eyes quickly scanned the room, searching for the attendants who had apparently left her alone only moments earlier.

"Who are you?"

She demanded, her voice sharp with alarm.

"And how did you enter my chamber?"

The cloaked figure said nothing.

Indhumati’s suspicion deepened.

She immediately reached toward the sword resting beside the mirror.

Her fingers wrapped around the hilt, and in one swift movement she drew the blade from its sheath.

The gentle atmosphere of the bridal chamber vanished instantly.

Indhumati took several steps backward, putting distance between herself and the mysterious intruder.

She raised the sword before her, her stance becoming defensive despite the elaborate bridal garments she wore.

"Answer me!"

The figure remained silent.

Indhumati tightened her grip.

"I asked who you are and why you entered my chamber. This is the royal palace, and you have entered the princess’s private chamber without permission. If you take another step toward me, I will consider you an intruder."

The cloaked figure slowly lifted his head.

Indhumati’s eyes narrowed.

There was something strangely familiar about the way he stood.

The posture.

The silence.

Even the faint movement of his shoulders.

But she could not see his face beneath the black shawl.

"Remove that shawl,"

She ordered, keeping the sword pointed directly at him.

"I will give you one chance to explain yourself."

For a moment, Devara remained completely still.

He had expected Indhumati to be surprised.

He had not expected her to draw a sword on him.

Behind the shawl, he struggled to suppress a smile.

Indhumati noticed the slight movement.

"Are you laughing?"

Devara immediately became still again.

Indhumati’s suspicion only increased.

"Whoever you are, I am warning you."

She shifted her footing, ready to defend herself if necessary.

Devara finally realized that his little attempt at secretly entering her chamber had taken an unexpectedly dangerous turn.

He had successfully evaded Queen Devayani.

He had successfully avoided the maids.

He had successfully entered the chamber.

But he had forgotten one very important detail.

The princess he was trying to surprise was apparently quite capable of defending herself.

Devara had not expected Indhumati to react quite so seriously, but instead of immediately revealing himself, he found the situation far too amusing to end it.

A playful idea crossed his mind, and beneath the black shawl his lips curved into a grin.

He deliberately lowered his head so that his face remained hidden in the shadows and then changed his voice, making it deeper and rougher than usual.

"You should not have chosen Devara as your husband, Princess."

Indhumati’s eyes widened.

The sword in her hand rose slightly.

"What did you say?"

The cloaked figure took a slow step forward.

"I have come for revenge. Your beloved king has created many enemies during his battles, and now one of those enemies has come to take something precious from him."

"Before this day is over, you will become my hostage, and Devara will finally understand what it feels like to lose someone he loves."

Indhumati immediately became even more alert.

She tightened her grip around the sword and moved toward the side of the chamber, keeping the mysterious intruder within her sight.

"You have entered the royal palace, entered my private chamber and threatened me, yet you expect me to simply surrender?"

Devara nearly laughed beneath the shawl.

He quickly deepened his voice again.

"You have no choice."

Indhumati’s eyes flashed.

"Then you have made a very serious mistake."

She suddenly raised her voice.

"GUARDS!"

Her cry echoed through the chamber and into the corridor.

Devara’s eyes widened beneath the shawl.

He had expected her to become frightened.

He had not expected her to immediately summon the palace guards.

Outside, hurried footsteps could already be heard approaching.

"GUARDS! THERE IS AN INTRUDER IN MY CHAMBER!"

Devara silently cursed his own decision.

’Perhaps I have taken this prank too far.’

Indhumati never lowered her sword.

She stood firmly between the intruder and the doorway, her bridal ornaments shimmering as she prepared herself for whatever happened next and she commanded.

"Stay where you are! You will not take another step."

Devara stared at her through the darkness of the shawl.

Despite the rapidly approaching guards, he could not help feeling proud.

’She really would have fought.’

Then he heard the unmistakable sound of several guards running toward the chamber.

Devara realized he had only seconds before the doors were opened.

And now he had to decide whether to reveal himself...

Or make the prank even worse.

Indhumati drew in a breath, preparing to shout even louder for the guards, but the cloaked figure moved before she could utter another word.

Devara crossed the small distance between them in an instant and gently but firmly covered her mouth with one hand while catching the wrist that held the sword with the other.

Indhumati’s eyes widened in shock.

She immediately struggled against him, twisting her wrist and trying to pull his hand away from her mouth.

Her sword remained firmly in her grip, though Devara had carefully restrained her hand without hurting her.

She glared at him furiously, her eyes demanding to know who this stranger was and how he had managed to get so close to her without her noticing.

Then footsteps thundered through the corridor outside.

"Princess Indhumati?"

One of the guards called from outside the chamber.

"Are you all right? We heard you calling for us."

Indhumati’s eyes widened further.

Devara glanced toward the closed door.

Then, without removing his hand from her mouth, he did something that made her completely freeze.

He perfectly imitated her voice.

"I’m all right!"

He called from inside the chamber.

"There is nothing to worry about. You may return to your duties."

The guards outside immediately stopped.

"Are you certain, Princess?"

Devara once again copied Indhumati’s voice with astonishing accuracy.

"Yes. I am perfectly fine. I only became startled for a moment. Please return to your duties."

There was a brief silence outside.

"Yes, Princess."

The footsteps gradually faded away.

Inside the chamber, Indhumati had become completely motionless.

Her sword hand was still held by the mysterious man, her other hand still covered by his palm, but the expression on her face had changed entirely.

Shock had replaced anger.

She slowly stared at the figure standing before her.

Then her eyes narrowed.

She knew that voice.

It had been her own voice.

No stranger should have been able to reproduce it so perfectly.

The cloaked figure slowly removed his hand from her mouth.

Indhumati immediately took a breath and stared at him in disbelief.

"You..."

She whispered.

Devara remained silent.

Indhumati looked from his covered face to the hand still holding her wrist.

Then back toward the shawl.

"Who are you?"

Devara could no longer contain his amusement. His shoulders began shaking slightly as he tried to suppress his laughter.

Indhumati noticed.

Her expression became suspicious.

"Wait..."

She looked at the way he stood.

The way he held her wrist.

The faint movement of his shoulders.

And then she heard him chuckle.

Her eyes widened.

"Devara?"

The cloaked figure finally laughed.

Indhumati stared at him for several seconds before realization completely dawned upon her.

"You!"

Devara slowly lowered the shawl from his face, revealing his smiling expression.

Indhumati’s jaw dropped.

"You were pretending to be an enemy?"

Devara grinned.

"I thought it would be a good surprise."

"A good surprise?"

She repeated incredulously.

"You entered my chamber disguised as an enemy, threatened to kidnap me, frightened me into calling the guards, and then imitated my voice so they would leave!"

Devara considered her words.

"When you put it that way, it sounds slightly worse."

"Because it is worse!"

Indhumati finally lowered her sword, though she still looked at him with an expression caught somewhere between annoyance and disbelief.

Devara released her wrist completely and took a small step back.

"I didn’t expect you to draw your sword."

"You entered my chamber without permission!"

"I was stopped by your mother."

"And instead of listening to her, you sneaked in?"

Devara’s smile became slightly sheepish.

"Yes."

Indhumati stared at him.

Then, despite herself, the corners of her lips began to rise.

She tried to suppress it but she failed.

A soft laugh escaped her.
