That shadowy bastard was up to something. The laughter wasn't directed at her flub. The shadow toad was too full of himself. There were enough problems for The Terror that Croaks in the Night to cause more.
Without Hyacinth's assistance, Harmony was forced to walk. Xera had gotten trapped by students excitedly gathering to ask how she did that strike. The girl was too polite not to answer. While Harmony was missing an opportunity to learn about the girl's past, finding her naughty toad was the priority.
There he was. At the dorms, as Hyacinth watched from the shadows as Becca leaned against the wall, her eyes looking up in adoration at a nearly naked muscular man leaning over her, with one of his arms planted over the short girl's head while he leaned over her.
So focused on tracking her toad through [Familiar Bond], it was only now that Harmony felt the pull from her primal bond. That man with the perfect body and hair wasn't any random person. It was her pet prince.
That bloody toad sicced Adric on her resident associate. Possibly an adjacent attack on her frackling by breaking the woman's heart, though this much glee wouldn’t come until that plan hit fruition. Harmony was fully aware of the effect her pet had on most women and a portion of men, whether it was love-struck, jealousy, or controlling actions. A few, like Ambrosia, had zero interest in the man. Becca clearly was not immune. At least that made it more likely that she was human, even with those odd bits floating inside her body. Ruthless as her toad was, he had a grander scheme planned. Harmony projected extreme displeasure at him through [Familiar Bond]
As for her late-to-arrive pet, she’d supplied him with more clothes than that. They’d stolen his palace wardrobe, and he'd taken two large bags of them with him. As a clothes connoisseur, he should be wearing more than a loincloth with a small brown pouch tied to it. Not that he objected to nudity, but the man liked his fancy clothes. Preened in them even.
Between Hyacinth’s malicious glee, Adric obliviously making the very verbal Becca alternate between speechlessness and giggles, and the absurdity of the situation, Harmony weighed her options as she walked slowly into the scene, juggling social skills to keep a calm face.
“Well, I did get out of a very personal relationship recently. I was touched right here.” Adric moved his free hand to his chest. “But it was very chaotic, and she had a preexisting commitment with a close friend that needed to be mended. I knew it was never going to work out.”
When faced with a complex mess of issues, it was always best to prioritize. One had to staunch the bleeding before cleaning up the stains. “Ahem, Adric, where did your clothes go?”
“Harm!” He cried excitedly and lifted her up for only half a spin, as it wasn’t the same with her new height or body’s new density. “Hyacinth said I’d find you here. My... um… paperwork, while allowing travel, didn’t grant me rights to bring anything. You’ll have to teleport back to claim my luggage and pay the possession and storage fees. The next destination was used to Mazlavia’s tendencies and had this available. ”
Harmony doubted the charter would cover the teleportation fees to return to Mazlavia or the fees they heaped on Adric’s stuff. Maekus already admitted he was bending the rules by being her academic advisor. So no favors, loans, or jobs from him. Stuff could be replaced, but people couldn’t.
“I thought the goal was to settle the issues with Bowe? He wasn’t impounded as well?”
Adric was less of a man without his pet, steed, and wiser of the pair. Luck had him back in Hazeldown when they departed. But bringing him along had been complicated and full of paperwork, as whoever heard of a pet with their own pet? Lawyers had a field day. Then there was feeding him. Dragon chow couldn’t be any cheaper in Ricort. Adric’s arrival brought everything to a very hard deadline, unless there was a good surprise for once.
“Oh no, thanks to your marvelous Master Hyacinth, he’s solved almost all the problems.” He held up his small pouch. “Ta-Da!” When nothing happened, he wiggled the bag a little. “The magic has some side effects.”
Pure unadulterated smugness radiated from Hyacinth now mixed with malicious glee. It was the feeling he gave when he finally landed a fatal blow on particularly tricky prey. Oh, no.
Oh, Yes! Her toad sent back.
From the opening of the bag, up popped what could be a rainbow garden snake, except Harmony knew that creature, no matter the size. Even the tiny dolls made of him sold by vendors in Hazeldown were bigger than his current form. “Bowe!” she let out.
The unusual appearance of the coatl didn't lessen Harmony's vigilance. [Keen Investigative Awareness] Had already connected half the skeleton back together. Hyacinth performing what was hard to call a miracle, without knowing the consequences of this change, wasn't enough to explain the shadow guides' overflowing emotions or arranged scenario.
With a blip of darkness. Becca's familiar appeared in the sky, diving down, tentacles and sharp beak reaching out with rage. “Forbidden!” It cried as it targeted Bowe.
Chronostasis had things in hand. Becca's shocked face revealed she wasn't part of this mess. Bloody toad. Hurting the woman's guide would be in poor taste. [Small Armor] and [High Kick] helped calculate future position and attack options. Extra tricks needed to be accounted for.
Reaching out to stop the frackling before it struck, Harmony crafted a non-lethal attack based on soul strike and the lessons learned from Pappi on dealing with difficult patients. [Final Silence] could be slapped on directly, but some abilities bypassed it, and this gave her the chance to test things out. She wove it with [Renew Spirit], [Mend], [Cold Touch], and targeted toward the frackling because she knew how slippery shadow creatures could be [Shadowed Graves], a lot of energy and effort to create a static suppression field like a glove around her hand to safely catch and restrain her target.
It did try to slip out of her grasp, but tiny adjustments as Harmony enforced her will over this struggle secured the bird-like creature back into place.
“Marshmallow!” Becca cried.
“The conclave forbids this!” Her familiar cried.
Hyacinth hopped out of his patch of shadows. “Yours made sure mine was excluded from that long ago. Even then, you'll find no rules were broken, merely bypassed.” Hyacinth's normally rough voice came out smooth and full of confidence.
Yet, most of the time when you talk to me, all I get is a croak. Harmony lectured through [Familiar Bond]
Grack! He sent back full of emotions and undertones, stating that he had his reasons, and this situation was different and personal. The toad had saved her life too many times that she wasn’t going to hold too much of a grudge over this right now.
“I'm sorry my guide chose to antagonize yours with his schemes. Is Marshmallow calm enough for me to let go?”
Becca glared at her familiar, the twitch in her eyebrow signalling the conversation she was having through their bond.
“It’s me who should be apologizing. Marsh wasn’t even striking at the culprit, to think she’d go after someone who was a third party to their squabble. Which she refuses to give me details on. I’m supposed to be the responsible student managing Hunter Dorm, and even I was shocked by her actions. But yes, please release Marshmallow. I haven’t seen such impressive containment from a first-year in ever, but I shouldn't be surprised when it comes from the Tertiary, and the highest-ranked healer in history. Will you continue staying in the dorms? Most of the Chosen take housing off campus.”
Harmony let go, and the frackling shook off some frost that had started to form on its wings and tentacles before flapping over to Becca’s shoulder.
At this point, she couldn’t afford to even clothe her pet, feed her armor, or purchase corpses for experiments, assuming that was even allowed. Surely there had to be a taxidermy supplier, which would be surreal considering how close she was to choosing that profession over being a maid. Too on the nose. There was no way she would add housing to that list. Though being one of the top nine, someone would surely throw such a thing at her feet for future favors or to murder her in her sleep. [Recall] didn’t even need to activate her mind to bring up those images of all the dead students from today's seminar, since drilling it into fresh young minds was the point.
“I have no plans to move currently, and you’ve been quite the resource while being kind and understanding of my situation. My man Adric seems to have taken a liking to you as well.” If the woman is smitten with him, she might as well use it.
“Your man? He did say he was directed here to meet a friend, and as a non-student on campus, I had to question him. Is he your fiancé?”
The fact that Adric didn’t say he was a pet was all Harmony needed to avoid the topic. “Nothing like that, more like close siblings. I kind of saved his life, and he has been committed to me ever since. There was also clearly a paperwork issue, so I do need to speak to him in private.”
Becca looked relieved. Why does every girl have to have hope? “I should let you… um…” The older girl blushed and ran off.
Harmony pulled her pet prince into her room, and a very smug and now small Hyacinth darted between their legs to join them. “Tell me everything. “ She demanded.
