23 Grohl
This band has no rhythm. The delving group was just a pick-up ensemble, so there was a lot that could be forgiven. The most generous thing Grohl likened it to was amateurs trying to do a tribute to the best song they’ve ever played. The team was trying hard but not matching up. It wasn’t equivalent to what they wanted out of Roxanne when they needed to replace perfection.
Tess was the overinflated lead singer, trying to carry the group with her power rather than creating cohesive music. Her instrument of death still hummed with potential, but she stepped in to show off by destroying seventy percent of the incoming shamblers as her suit moved loudly and destructively.
Gustov couldn't accept his limitations as the weakest one here. He couldn’t stick to a consistent note. He had to try to overdo it to impress the girl. [Bury] two shamblers at once, and all they did was twitch before coming out of a half-formed hole while all the undead turned their attention to the boy, requiring everyone to peel them off of them.
Bea was most acceptable, but she had no passion, no life, and no vibrancy in her cold, clinical performance. At best, she had a low level of disgust for the undead audience trying to flay the group with clawed appreciation.
Cole, the Dig Boy Escort, was the flustered manager complaining that there were” too many coming at them,” or “They should turn back.”
As the drummer,“Krack, crack, Clunk.” It was all about keeping the beat. Shattering legs and arms was more efficient than caving in skulls for these.
Tess blasting the floor boss and not allowing anyone else to take a shot was disappointing. A solo with no support.
The second floor was not a better practice for the group jiving together. The piles of kitchen scraps, fish guts, and battle leftovers known as goorzes scooted along quicker when Gustov cast his spell. Bea seemed even more offended by these, but had no compunctions about sticking her hand in them, thrashing about until it died, and with a flick of her arm removed the waste while muttering “Inelegant.”
Tess took to producing a stream of flame from her palm to deal with hers, because she didn’t want to “gum up the gears.”
At the end of the floor, a craggy white boulder waited.
“Hold up.” Cole started
Bea, ignoring the warning, stepped close enough to trigger the floor guardian, and it started to unfurl.
“That’s the new secret guardian. No one’s faced it since Lady White. According to the guild notice, you have to outlast it.” Coal started, the panic creeping into this voice.”
“This was in Lady White’s journal. She described it as a timing puzzle. Gustov corrected.
Bea spun supernaturally fast. “You’ve read her journals?” She asked the necromancer, finally looking at him with the intensity he desired. Behind her, the giant skeleton stood to its full height.
“Um…” Gustov stood tongue-tied.
“We really need to leave now.” Cole insisted.
“No Leaving!” The bone guardian spoke, and a wall of bone shot from the earth, sealing the way out of the cavern.
Grohl readied himself to play more than backup. It was time to duel a devil, and this might not be the band he wanted, but it was the one he had.
