25 Bea

This oversized guardian, Fossil, the dungeon whispered to Bea, was an impressive work of necromancy.  It was nothing like the shamblers or goorzes, the ineffective chaff of the first and second floors. Finally, something to test against.

Propelling forward, fueled by swallowed gnomes and a cold curiosity about how her body would hold up, Bea slammed her fist into the oversized skeleton's knee. *Crack!*

Not strong enough to move Fossil more than a smidgen, with only damage to her own reinforced skeleton. A minor fracture that Bea redirected necromantic energy to fix.

Fossil's counter punch had her shifting backwards with one of the partially repaired skills, [retreat]. Using that hurt more than the punch if one considered pain worth noticing.  The buckled and busted ground showed it was worth the discomfort.

“What did honored White's notes say on this creation?” Bea demanded of Gustov.

“Oh, um..” The young necromancer started to stutter under her cold gaze.

Tess peppered it with energy attacks to keep the guardian busy. Fossil acted like he was bothered, but the other construct was entirely unaffected. Bea guessed they all had roles to play for their masters.

Cole, their guide, stepped up while he thought it distracted. Not being an extension of House White, Bea had ignored the red-shirted man who’d been hired for this trip. Tess out-leveled the local but lacked experience in Old Bones.  “We’ll follow the guild’s advice. All we have to do is wait it out and endure until the guardian weakens.”

“I AM NOT WEAK!”

Where Tess’s attacks hadn’t harmed the guardian, Cole’s words certainly touched a nerve.  When Bea could barely track Fossil's acceleration, Cole had no chance. The fact that the man flinched rather than activating a skill at those words didn’t help.

Fossil’s bony fist hit the unprepared guide as his whole body, in a flash, moved across the dungeon floor as though he was part of it. What was left was a stain the color of his shirt on the wall. In moments, the second-highest-level participant in this delve was dead.

Fossil shuddered as all the living party members backed away. Bea could hear the whisper of the dungeon admonishing its creation. That was a bit excessive for this level of challenge. I don’t care if you felt disrespected. Remember the rules of this game.

Rules. Since coming back from the Deadlands, there had been a lot of new rules to learn that Bea’s revived brain didn’t understand or had holes big enough to hold mounds of corpses. How exactly did a person use the privy? Girl talk. The handling of non-living food.  Many of these didn’t come with simple explanations, like folding napkins had. One had to observe or ask to figure it out.

The admonishment was starting to wind down, but even that lecture didn’t seem like it was going to come with any punishment.

Bea approached the young necromancer again. “We don’t have much time. What did Lady White’s notes say about defeating this?”

“She had to use [Manipulate Dead] on the location and moment of her team’s strikes to weaken it. But… but… I only have [Burial]. I don’t know how we’ll defeat it.”

This is what welcomed her when she stepped into Old Bones' domain and started dismissively breaking the dungeon spirit’s work. Now there had to be a solution, or Lady White would lose key members, all because she got sloppy. It was so mortifying that Bea felt like she might die a second time.
