Tess
The durability of rock should not be superior to that of metal! Tess fumed as every attack her exosuit landed on the bone giant, scratched and dinged up her armor. The projectiles made some sense, but this was going to take hours of repair and polishing. It hadn’t shown the speed it used to take out Cole, which meant it was either toying with them, against the general rules of a dungeon, or there was another way to win. As the highest-level class here, it was up to her.
That thought caused her to go weak in the knees. Good thing the suit kept her stable and moving. This should have been easy; she’d done all of Nae’s Garden with an experienced team. “You can do this, Tess, it should be a piece of cake, you’re only with two people who haven’t even had their second class skill choice, and whatever Bea is.”
It was as if she’d summoned the devil. Bea dodged to her, matched her machine’s excelling pace, and spoke in her cold, beautiful voice. “What is the relevance of baked goods? I doubt we can do this without more information. I find my lack of general knowledge to be a deficit in this. You are widely respected for your intelligence. For Lady White’s sake, I will rely on you. Do your smart things and find the rules of this encounter.” With that, the beautiful, enigmatic woman dashed back into combat with the beast, making sure to cover attacks on any of her surviving companions.
“Twisted Metal, why can’t I move that smoothly? I need to update my programs, too.” Shuffling that problem to the back of its queue, Tess focused on the current issue, the engineering problem at hand. Brain, this is a request for you. No riding this wagon to victory.Time for the extra brain. Tapping on her chest, PeteThree dropped to the floor with instructions. The Petes weren’t designed for combat; the experience clearing houses made that clear. Primarily diagnostic tools, there was a chance this one wouldn’t return. It wouldn’t be the first time a funeral would need to be held for one.
Since it was toying with them, the basic pattern detection was a lie and couldn’t be relied on long-term. No, this was the time for material science. This guardian clearly had metaphysical weight beefing up its durability. It also understood and heard enough that yelling out orders wouldn’t do.
Detaching one of her earpieces, Tess danced less gracefully than Bea to Gustov, the little necromancer, and slapped it into his ear, nearly causing the young necromancer to topple over.
‘Can you [Bury] its feet? Mouth your answer. I can read lips.’ She messaged over.
“It cookie work like bat. Seagulls too low.”
Okay, Tess was bad at lip-reading. But she got the idea. ‘Try anyway’
The earth churned and softened under the behemoth's foot, causing it to sink an inch. Disappointing.
Bea appeared, rolling under the petrified monster’s legs, her hand dragging across the ground. There, she revealed her first skill as the softened earth opened up. [Dig], no, it’s almost too strong, maybe an [Earth Mover] ability. Tess shook off those thoughts as one leg slipped into the hole, allowing PeteThree to approach it and attach to the stuck limb without getting flattened.
It ripped it out of the hole easily, unperturbed by the attacks that peppered it. PeterThree collected information and sent it back. What was working and what wasn’t working. It didn’t seem like anything was, except exhausting themselves against the dungeon monster, but little by little, the data revealed something.
“Bea! When you get close to the bones, they weaken slightly. Not enough to do anything, but if you can figure out how your presence is affecting it, then maybe do that more!” Tess yelled.
Exosuit ThreeC was at sixty percent power. It wasn’t truly functional when it got close to single digits. Bea’s presence was slight, but that was the only thing the numbers showed her. Something needed to happen, or they were all going to die here.
