Tyrann didn’t give two shits about this binary town kingdom, at most a dull Shin-ee should control both small cities. This was only a stop toward his goal. Sniffing the air, he used his badger-kin senses to dive into the ways of travel, tracking where the girl went.

She'd arrived in Naewauld and teleported here to this city of death and decay. The trail ended here, but where was she? The seal placed on his tongue stifled half his beastkin’s mundane senses. There was no way she could be dead. Almost no one here has evolved, so it was like being around a bunch of children she could hop over.

Tyrann Mathi fumed with an aura that drove citizens in the streets to give the beast-kin a wide berth, even if his dark fur with white top going from his head and down his back wasn’t unusual enough to be intimidating.

One in every eight thousand one hundred and ninety-two of the kin were born Shin-ee, but most of those were dull, copper at most. The royal bunnies rarely had their own Shin-ee, and this one was golden. She had to leap halfway around the world to an insignificant speck because prophecy demanded it. She knew how unreliable such things were.

“Another beast kin, you think this one came with her? I wish the images from the Games would pan down just a little more, so we could get the full view. I wish I had a pet like her.”

The conversation, in hushed tones, was easily intercepted by Tyrann’s ears.

The two talkers, young men, fell over from the force of Tyrann’s arrival. He was careful not to touch them, but the disturbed air was obviously too much for these unevolved whelps.

“Tell me of this other beastkin.” As distasteful as it was to use compulsion on lessers, it had to be done, so he let [Tame Human] do its work. It was one of the reasons why he’d been sent on this retrieval mission.

“Loap’s not in the Ascendant Games as a competitor; if she were, she’d be my favorite. We all love Lady White. If Loap were a competitor, she’d clearly be at the top because she’s excellent at bouncing.” The first human blubbered.

So, she is here! “Her leaps and bounds are magnificent. Deadly at a single pounce. What is her role in these games? Is it some kind of local event?”

The second human was just as eager to answer. “This is the first year. It’s a competition run by the local adventurers’ guild through the dungeon. For those who’ve evolved. I’m not sure what the prizes are, title or something. We just like to watch. Great fights and flattering sights almost make me want to do more runs in Old Bones. Loap is attached to the Lord of the Rising Dawn.”

Attached! Local marriage customs would mean nothing. Such silly notions are easily ended with a claw. “Who is this Lord?”

“Lord Coodly is much better than he was.” The second human responded.

“You can say it, he was kind of a buffoon before. But since he got Loap, he’s been doing great in the games.” The first human countered.

“Riding on the back of Lady White’s strength, you mean.” The second one continued with a tone that showed they’d debated this many times.

“How are they attached!” Tyrann bellowed at the squabbling human.

“Loap is his pet.”  The first human responded meekly.

Pet! That was their translation for primal connections. Tyrann looked at his claws, and they felt insufficient. They could not so easily sever that kind of connection. ”What have you done, Loap?”

“Oh, she mostly goes around naked and reads the obelisk.”  One of the humans responded as though it were a question for him under the guise of compulsion.

This lord has taken her dignity!

Tyrann’s wail startled the humans enough to shake [Tame Human]’s control over them. They rushed to escape.

The beastkin collected himself and gnashed his teeth, a badger of a bee’s favor, does not give up. This lord may not be killed, but there was much that could be done to make him respect his bonded, and nothing would stop him from making sure those lessons were carved into the man’s heart.
