29 - Gustov
When Lady White spoke at The Grave Society, it was the first time Gustov felt pride about being a necromancer. A common class option for those willing to do a dirty, smelly job and bend the knee to the Society. It wasn’t even the feelings the skill-enforced fear brought up; it was a reflection of what you could do if you tried. That was why, when Threnody left, he jumped at the opportunity to join her instead of signing a contract that would have kept him there.
And now he was trapped fighting against something impossibly strong while their guide's body lay dead against the cavern wall, and it really had it out for necromancers. “Rot, rot, rot, rot!” Gustov cried while we ran, tossing out [Burial] at the rare guardian’s feet whenever it was up. Bea would use her earth-moving spell, and it would delay it for a smidge, but he could feel his mana flagging.
“The rhythm. This is how one should make music. Playing like your life depends on it.” Grohl cried beside him, apparently having the time of his life while they chipped, beat, and pounded their way through the fight.
“Do more of that,” Tess yelled to Bea, who faced this monster as tirelessly as it fought.
Crazy people. He’d joined a dungeon run with the insane.
Choose your class’s second skill-
Gustov stumbled at the notification, so busy trying to survive that the leveling snuck up on him. Not that he’d get to make his choice. The bone giant’s fist crashed in, until all he could see was that white petrified bone. Unexpectedly, the drummer shoved away, taking his place. All the necromancer could do was watch the level one walloper take the lethal blow.
The fist landed with a dull thud, surprising the attacker as much as Gustov. “Up, I can’t take any more strikes like that. The vibrational negating burned out [Auditory Defense].”
The necromancer took off. Everyone told you not to pick a new skill in the dungeon, but without something to change the balance of this fight, they weren’t going to make it.
Choose your class’s second skill, Rot - Necromantic Urge - Raise Undead
Two classics, one of which mocked the path he left, and the other would bring back Cole to take one blow. Harmony could do miracles with things considered useless. Please don’t be useless. Gustov selected Necomantic Urge.
The skill burst forth with adrenaline in his chest, and the thick taste of death, ancient, old, and recent, flooded his senses. [Necromantic Urge], [Necromantic Urge], [Necromantic Urge] Gustov desperately worked on activating it as he ran, hoping it would do something to help them live. Bea felt even more beautiful as the young man switched to watching her while things clicked into place.
With an extra burst of speed, the maid’s fist hit the guardian's shin. Instead of chips flying, the bone split in half under the blow. Maybe they could win.
In retribution, the giant’s fist hit her with the same speed it used to take out Cole.
“Nooooooo!” Gustov screamed as her body flew by, hitting the cavern wall behind him with enough force to shake the chamber, sending rocks and dust flying from the impact.
He’d requested Threondy set this up with her. It was his fault she was dead. Despair crept in with inevitability as she’d been the only one to do any damage to the monster.
A wave of ice down Gustov’s back sent his skin tingling; it was half a moment to realize it wasn’t his fear. Stones rumbled, and the necromancer let his eyes leave their attacker to watch Bea rise from the rubble. Her face was split in a jagged opening from her temple and through her right eye down to her chin. A bloodless wound that revealed only white bone as the muscle and skin had been parted.
“How dare you damage the gift my savior had given to me!” Bea yelled at the guardian.
Cold, unearthly rage emanated from the beauty, and Gustov felt his attraction to her mix with a newfound fear.
